But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. (Did we really need to make an Olympic sport out of trampoline?) The fault, however, is not that new sports are added, since the Games should stay relevant to the interests of society at large. The fault lies in that more sports aren't thrown out on their respective ears. It didn't used to be that way. Cricket, croquet and the once beloved "equestrian high jump" were evicted after the 1900 Games. The "plain high dive," which allowed no twists or somersaults, used to be an Olympic sport. So was live pigeon shooting. Now they won't even release live pigeons as part of the Opening Ceremonies, fearful of traumatizing the little beasts. Golf left after after 1904, the same year the fearful "plunge for distance," a diving event, met its Olympic demise. After 1920 the still popular tug-of-war was given the heave-ho daddy-o, and in 1932 "rope climbing" and the curiously named "club swinging" were discarded. The last sport to get the axe? Polo in 1936. Small wonder the Olympics is now so bloated it can't get up from its own stuffed couch.

March 6, 2000 I was flicking around the television remote the other night when I went past the PBS station and saw that they were airing yet another of their ballroom dancing competitions. Although I only paused for two seconds, it was long enough to hear the announcer report that ballroom dancing has been accepted as an exhibition sport by the International Olympic Committee. Douglas is considering joining the U.S. Olympic team as a trampolinist for the Olympic games in the year 2000 in Sydney, Australia. By LESLIE ROTAN State News Sports Writer But it just might. Artistic gymnastic competitions, like the ones seen currently in the Olympics, consist of a six-component rotation. Trampoline and tumbling exercises, on the other hand, are performed consecutively on an 808-foot strip. The skills performed for tumbling are similar to those performed during an artistic floor program, but one pass in tumbling is equal to three passes on the floor By the time he was 17, Douglas had reached the highest level of trampoline competition, and the second highest level of tumbling competition. He competed successfully in both areas, and made appearances in three national meets and one international meet. But when it came time for him to go to college, Douglas had no intention of pursuing gymnastics. Martin told Douglas where the team practiced, so Douglas dropped by in early November, two weeks into the season, and talked to MSU head coach Rick Atkinson.
