The Underground Railroad
Michigan was a strong anti-slavery state.
These are the general routes that escaping slaves took
through Michigan to reach Canada where slavery was illegal.
Before the war many Michigan citizens helped slaves escape from the South, via the Underground Railroad, a secret, often informal, organization of safe hiding places and people willing to provide transportation between them. By day, runaway slaves hid in buildings or underground cellars called stations. At night, they traveled north. Station operators gave the slaves food, warm clothing and a place to sleep. They then gave them directions or transportation to the next station, ten to fifteen miles away. The Underground Railroad operated primarily between 1830 and 1861. Sometime after the Civil War began, a woman in Bowling Green, Kentucky, used this chain to keep her slave in her barn. The slave sawed through the chain and walked to the camp of the 23rd Michigan Infantry. Soldiers took the man to a blacksmith who removed the chain. Colonel Spaulding kept the chain and presented it to the Michigan state librarian upon his return to Michigan. Michigan has many Civil War heroines. Among them were Quakers who worked in the Underground Railroad. Laura Smith Haviland, whose picture appears in the gallery, was a Quaker from Adrian who led escaped slaves to freedom in Canada. She was so effective in her abolitionist activities and her work for the Underground Railroad that Southern slave owners offered a $3,000 reward for her capture. She and her family opened one of the first schools in Michigan to admit black boys and girls. A historical marker stands at the Raisin Valley Friends Church in Adrian where her father was the first pastor. Laura Haviland is buried in the church cemetery.

Fairbanks, Alaska information on activities and events for our customers and friends.
To help you learn more about Fairbanks Alaska and plan your visit to our great state, the Ranch Motel has made available here a number of resources.
Fairbanks, Alaska is:
Fairbanks, 358 miles north of Anchorage (by way of the Parks Highway), likes to think that it (instead of Delta) is the end of the Alaska Highway. Its central location makes it the focal point for the tiny villages scattered throughout the surrounding wilderness, and Fairbanks is a staging point for North Slope villages such as Barrow and the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay. Fairbanks is called "The Golden Heart of Alaska," a reference to the character of her people as much as to the location of Fairbanks in Alaska's interior, or to the discovery of gold in 1902. Giving a Future to Alaska's Past Since 1976
The Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry Summer Hours
MATI is opened seven days a week from May 1st to September 30th.
Hours are 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM.
Winter hours are Saturdays only, 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM Alaska's history has often followed the path dictated by two opposing forces - the desire to exploit the natural resources, and the need for the technology and transportation to reach, process, and remove the products. At each step, Alaska's development has been limited by the available technology and transportation of the day. The Alaska of today was formed in a series of booms and busts. A new resource was found, the technology to exploit it became available, and the resource was exhausted. Gold and other resource exploration resulted in the development and use of railroads, roads, river steamboats, and (later) aircraft to serve the transportation needs. As the inevitable bust followed the boom, the technology of the day was left behind on the tundra and in the forests to rust and rot because it was too expensive and too impractical to remove. MATI was established to give a home to the transportation and industrial remnants and to tell the stories of the people and the machines that opened Alaska to exploration and growth.

    Montgomery County Historical Society
    111 W. Montgomery Avenue, Rockville, MD 20850
The Beall-Dawson House was built in 1815 for Upton Beall, Clerk of the Court for Montgomery County and a man of means in county society. The house was built overlooking one of the main roads into town and would certainly have been an impressive sight at the time. Rockville, while a crossroads, was still a rural town with only 200 residents and 35 houses. The Beall-Dawson House, larger and more impressive than other houses in town, was also built of brick, a rarity indeed! The house was built in the Federal style which was popular in Georgetown where Upton Beall was raised. Jane Robb Beall, Mr. Beall's wife, was daughter of one of Rockville's tavern owners. They had three daughters, Jane, Mathilda and Margaret. This is also the location of the Montgomery County Historical Society Metrorail's Red line to the Rockville station, exit the station and take the RO54

The Alexandria Black History Resource Center is located in the Parker-Gray district of the city. Staff and volunteers from citizen organizations interpret the contributions of African Americans to Alexandria's history and culture. The building that today houses the center was constructed in 1940 as the Robinson Library, the African American community's first public library. With desegregation in the 1960's, the building was converted to use for community service programs. The Center presents exhibitions, lectures, tours of the center and other activities relating the history and accomplishments of African Americans in Alexandria. Paintings, photographs, books and other memorabilia document the African American experience in Alexandria and Virginia from 1749 to the present. Museum Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
