A magnificent web site on trilobites. Here you'll find extensive information on the eight orders of trilobites with pictures and information about the important genera of these fascinating, but sadly defunct, creatures. The site also includes a basic introduction to the trilobites, their morphology, a glossary of terms, phylogeny, and otongeny. Highly recommended. Kevin's Trilobite Home Page . Kevin Brett. This may be the best site for a great variety of trilobite resources. Included here are photographs of trilobites from the Ordovician, Silurian and Cambrian, a classification of the trilobites, links to trilobite and other paleontology sites, a newsletter, bibliography, and other trilobite related subjects. Among My Trilobites . Frank Galef. A great site on trilobites with a very extensive collection of trilobite fossil photographs. The photographs and information are arranged by geological periods from the Cambrian to the Carboniferous. Trilobyte . This site from Japan is in Japanese and is difficult to navigate for the us English speakers, but if you keep going you'll find a large collection of trilobite photographs.

Gone, but not forgotten. . .
Click on this image to view an enlarged version! Among famous groups of extinct organisms, trilobites probably rank second only to the dinosaurs in fame. Their fossils are instantly recognizable and often strikingly beautiful. In fact, prehistoric people liked them as much as we do. At Arcy-sur-Cure in France, a 15,000-year- old human settlement, one of the artifacts found by archeologists was a trilobite that had been drilled to be worn as an amulet. Although the last few trilobites went extinct about 245 million years ago, they are one of the best-known and most-studied groups of fossil arthropods Or click on the buttons below to learn more about trilobites. Denman Institute for Research on Trilobites
Denman Island is a small island located just off the east coast of Vancouver Island, about half-way up. The rocks here are deep-water clastics of Late Cretaceous age, so this island is perhaps an unlikely place to establish a trilobite institute. But there is no shortage of fossil crabs and lobsters locally (I call them surrogate trilobites) and Carboniferous trilobites have recently been discovered onVancouver Island. Of course, easternmost British Columbia belongs to Laurentia, geological North America, and here Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian trilobites are common and well-preserved at many localities.

DIRT Research
In 1993, I helped to establish the British Columbia Paleontological Alliance as an umbrella group of amateur and professional paleontologists in regional societies in the province. I served as its Chair for the first four years. The Alliance has now over 200 members in six regional societies across the province. After leaving the University of Toronto for Denman Island, I established the Denman Institute for Research on Trilobites (DIRT) in 1989 as a "home" for my continuing work on trilobites and on fossils in general. A wide range of books on fossils and their meaning is available in libraries and bookstores. Some deal with broad themes, such as living fossils or mass extinctions. Others focus on the paleobiology, paleoecology, and evolution of various animal groups ammonites, trilobites or, the perennial favourites, dinosaurs.

Trilobites: Systematics, Ontogeny and Biogeography
Current research on trilobites by Greg Edgecombe and co-workers mostly focuses on Middle and Upper Ordovician diversity from Tasmania, New South Wales and Argentina. Silicified faunas from the Precordillera of San Juan and La Rioja, Argentina, have been the subject of a series of papers by Edgecombe in collaboration with Prof Brian Chatterton (University of Alberta, Canada), Dr Beatriz Waisfeld (Universidad Nacional de Curdoba, Argentina) and Dr Emilio Vaccari (Universidad Nacional de Jujuy, Argentina). Silicification preserves a detailed record of larval and juvenile morphology for many groups of trilobites. Contact: Dr Gregory D. Edgecombe greged@austmus.gov.au

ESS 116 PALEONTOLOGY LAB 5. RECONSTRUCTING A CAMBRIAN TRILOBITE The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the sources of paleontological information. The basic task is to produce an accurate scale reconstruction of the mineralized exoskeleton (external skeleton) of the Australian trilobite Xystridura templetonensis (Chapman) 1929 by using the Canadian trilobite Olenoides serratus (Rominger) 1887 as a model. Both of these trilobites lived in the early part of the Middle Cambrian, about 540 million years (Ma) ago. Olenoides serratus is used as a model for two reasons. First, it is similar to Xystridura in many important respects - including shape and proportions. Second, Olenoides serratus occurs in the famous Burgess Shale of British Columbia in which soft parts as well as hard parts are commonly preserved as fossils. Consequently, a number of specimens of Olenoides serratus with legs, gills and antennae are known and these have been used to reconstruct the whole of the exoskeleton of this species (Whittington, 1975). Normally only the dorsal part of the exoskeleton of trilobites is preserved because this is the part that was mineralised with calcium carbonate (calcite). Compiled by Dr Michael Rasser, a palaeontologist at Geologische Bundesanstalt, Vienna, this site aims to "present and support the work of geologists and paleontologists studying the Alpine Jurassic". The site includes a searchable literature database (currently containing 1134 records), descriptions of ongoing projects, a directory of people in the field and related links. Paleoecology; Paleontology/Jurassic; BUGS coleopteran ecology package : an interpretative tool for insect ecology and palaeoentomology This site, from the Environmental Archaeology Laboratory at the University of Umea, offers BUGS, a freely downloadable entomological and palaeoentomological database. The database has been compiled using Microsoft Access as part of an ongoing project to provide habitat and distribution data on the North European beetle fauna and its Quaternary fossil record. The site also provides background information on the project and how to use the database. Other resources include QBIB, a bibliography of 1,500 references relating to Quaternary insects, and links to related sites. Paleoentomology/Quaternary; Entomology; Paleoentomology; Insects, Fossil;

Journal of Paleontology
This journal is published bimonthly to promote the study of paleontology . Each issue measures 9.5x7", with about 200 pages, 10-15 feature articles and some shorter pieces like announcements, notes, and society reports. There was a size change to 11x8.5" starting with volume 62. The feature articles have references and are nicely illustrated with plates. Issue number 6 of each volume has a subject index and an author index for the volume. The subjects listed for each issue represent just a few of the topics. Common subjects like foraminifera, conodonts, mollusks, and trace fossils are present in nearly every issue. The best way to find the issues you seek is to consult a bibliography for your topic or a multi-decade index for this journal. Published by the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists and the Paleontological Society, with generous support and cooperation of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Condition: The individual journals are clean and in very good condition with some lightly soiled and lightly rubbed covers and some lightly bumped corners. Spines are often darkened or faded with minor color chips, most issues have a small name printed on the front. Volumes 44 and 45 have a faint smell of damp which should fade with storage in an open area. Please ask if you want more a detailed description for any given issue. I have mentioned any specific problems, if any, in the individual listing.
