The History program at the University prepares one to understand oneself and one’s society, as well as other people in different cultures in the past and in the present. Beyond this the department trains students for the teaching of history at all levels, government service, and graduate studies in history. The study of history may serve as preprofessional training for other areas such as law or the ministry. Two options are offered for the History major, and each by itself leads to a B.A. with a major in History. Option A is primarily for those who plan to enter professional schools, such as law, and for those who want to pursue advanced work in history at the graduate level. Option B is designed primarily for those who want to enter government service, business, or teaching at the secondary level. When taken in conjunction with the Teaching and Learning program in Secondary Education (see page 148), Option B satisfies the requirements for teacher certification in the Social Sciences. Prospective teachers should seek an adviser in the College of Education and Human Development in addition to their adviser in the History department.

II The Newton Project based at Imperial College, London show how the facilities of web-based databases and the technology of hyper-text links can provide new academic resources, which are also available to a broader public.( If one was to make a brief survey of the growth of the literary forms of historical scholarship and criticism, from antiquity to the twentieth century (perhaps put overly simply as the transition from scroll to codex), it would be possible to describe a story that bound in the increasing credibility and authority of historians and historical writing with the invention of a series of literary devices. As Anthony Grafton has elegantly established, the invention of the footnote was a manifestation of a culture of witnessing, testimony and citation, which was rooted deep in the rhetorical foundations of historical thinking.(

Product Reviews: Coffee-table History A wonderfully illustrated survey Let me begin by saying that I think some of the other reviewers expected a bit much. If you are an afficianado of documentaries, you will probably not learn anything new. Descriptions are pretty brief and you may recognize some passages verbatim from your favorite British history specials (which were probably narrated or produced by the author). What else could you possibly expect when trying to cover 5103 years in 416 pages?! That said, what I liked most about this book was the color photos. Almost every other page yielded a glorious plate of illuminated manuscripts, Westminster tombs, crumbling castles,etc. Moreover, these weren't usually the tired old photos one usually associates with "survey" books. Of course, the Hans Holbein portraits of the Tudors and their paramours are included (I don't think you can publish a book on British history without them!) However, so are detailed views of Skara Brae, the tombs of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York in Westminster, etc. You may see photos of places which you have, heretofore, only read about.

The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Reformation
4-Volume Set
Edited by HANS J. HILLERBRAND, Duke University

Comprising four volumes, 1,200 articles, and more than 1.3 million words, the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Reformation is a unique compendium of contemporary scholarship focusing on the entire range of religious and social changes wrought by the Reformation, including not only issues of church polity and theology but also related developments in politics, economics, demographics, art, and literature. This broadly cast, interdisciplinary definition allows for a picture of the Reformation that escapes the narrow confines of theology and ecclesiology in favor of a comprehensive social and intellectual history of not only Western Europe and the British Isles but also southern Europe, Scandinavia, and east-central Europe in the early modern period. The unique breadth of coverage makes it an unparalleled source of information on the personalities and events of the era.

Brecon castle and The Castle of Brecon Hotel;
A brief historical guide
Hotel circa 1800 Download history documents (history .zip 23Kb). This may save you some time. The Brecon Beacons and the Brecon area have a long history of human habitation. Early settlements were mainly on the hill tops as the valleys would have been regularly flooded and covered in dense forest. Evidence has been found of the manufacture of flint tools on the castle site, dating back 4000 to 5000 years. North West of the hotel is the remains of Pen-y-crug, an Iron Age hill fort. It may well have been occupied when the Romans arrived - Two miles to the west of Brecon lies Y-Gaer. a roman fort covering nearly 5 acres - The fort was built around 5O AD and may have been occupied as late as 300 AD. The first regiment in occupation probably came from North West Spain. Brecon was a Roman cross-roads and some roman roads remain visible on the Beacons even today. In the fifth Century the local ruler is said to have sent his daughter to Ireland in search of a husband. Many of her retinue of guards died on the journey. She found her Irish Prince their son, Brychan, was sent to Wales to grow up at the Court of his grandfather. It is from the name 'Brychan' that the old country name of Brysheiniog and later 'Brecon' was derived. One of his daughters, called Tudful was killed by Barbarians. The welsh for martyr is merthyr, hence the settlement of Merthyr Tydfil 20 miles to the south got its name. Brecon castle and town are Norman in origin. The castle came first and was the creation of Bernard de Neufmarche. He took his surname from the village of Neufmarche near Rouen, the capital of Normandy. He was of the second generation of conquerors who extended Norman influence into the Marches of Wales. By 1093 de Neufmarche and his knights had defeated the Welsh rulers of south Wales and began to build themselves the castles from which they intended to control their new lands.
