Tunisian History
Carthaginians and Romans In ancient times Tunisia was part of the mighty Carthaginian Empire. Its chief city, Carthage, was reputedly founded in 814BC by Phoenician traders, who had previously established several small trading posts along the North African coast. The site of Carthage, which became the largest and most famous of these Phoenician settlements, is thought to have been slightly to the north-east of the modern city of Tunis. The Carthaginian Empire dominated most of North Africa, as well as parts of the Iberian Peninsula, Sardinia and Sicily. By the third century BC, however, trouble was brewing for the Carthaginians, in the shape of the fast-expanding Roman Empire.

Brief History
Zenata Berbers, nomadic people were the first inhabitants of present-day Tunisia. In 1101 BC Phoenician sailors founded trading posts, and in 814 the Phoenician queen Elyssa (Dido) founded Chartage which became a trading centre for gold and precious metals. The Numidians, nomadic shepherds, remained in the mountains. In 164 BC the city was destroyed by the Romans and Caesar incorporated it with Numidia into the province of Africa Nova.
In 439 AD the Vandals invaded the area, but were conquered by Byzantium in 534. Its rule lasted for 100 years in spite of frequent Berber rebellions. Then the Arab conquest brought Islam. The Aghlabid kingdom ruled Tunisia until tribes from Egypt devastated the country in the 11th century. In 1148 the Sicilian King Roger II arrived and crowned himself ‘King of Africa’. In 1230, the governor of Ifriqiya (roughly present-day Tunisia) proclaimed himself amir, founded the Hafsid dynasty and renamed the country Tunisia after the new capital Tunis. The country became an Ottoman province in 1574, but in the subsequent centuries the Italians, French and British fought for control over Tunisia. By the Convention of La Marsa in 1883 Tunisia became a French protectorate. Nationalism developed in the early 20th century and the Constitutional Party (Destour), later to become the Neo-Destour Party, demanded internal autonomy.

T unisia is a small North African country that sits wedged between Algeria and Libya. For its accessibility, tourist facilities, and cultural history, it seems much closer to Sicily and Malta, its neighbors across the blue Mediterranean Sea, but Tunisia is doubtlessly an Arab country with a heritage and tradition primarily influenced by Islam. Since Aeneas washed up on the shores near Carthage, Tunisia has been an important place of refuge and rejuvenation. Today, package tours from Europe regularly land at the Tunis-Carthage Airport, just a few kilometers from the spot where Dido staged her tragic farewell to the founder of Roman civilization. Most visitors are trundled off to the seaside resorts where sun and sand and sea can restore them, just as they did the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Spaniards, Ottoman Turks, and the French who took their turns occupying this piece of North Africa. For many who visit, Tunisia is a comfortable step into the mystery of an Arab culture, but the step here is never far from Europe. French troops marched into Tunisia in 1881 and soon held sway over the country and didn't relinquish colonial control until independence in 1956. French is still the language of commerce and shares official status with Arabic. German and English are now being taught in schools and contribute to the international sense that few Arab countries can match. Most everyone begins a visit in Tunis, the national capital. Mosques and markets dominate the medina (the old city). Souq el-Attarine (the perfume market) is a wondrous treat for the senses. The French made their colonial contribution to the architecture of the capital at the start of the 20th century in what is still called

Tunisia won Africa's first World Cup match at Argentina '78
    By Emmanuel Huesu
BBC Sport Online Tunisia's 3-1 victory over Mexico at the Rosario stadium on June 2, 1978 was the first time that an African team won a match at the World Cup. Midfielder Tarak Dhiab, now a successful businessman, was the architect of that historic victory. "We arrived Argentina with a lot of fear," Dhiab told BBC Sport Online. "Zaire had done pretty badly in the previous finals and many felt we would suffer the same fate." Dark horses "We were given no chance. But we prepared very well and were confident," says the 1977 African footballer of the year. The North Africans were grouped with defending champions Germany, Poland and Mexico.

Moments in History Drops Von Borries Reprint in TUNISIA 1943 Moments in History (Critical Hit, Inc.) has recently announced that they are dropping the Vance Von Borries re-issue of his classic design, DECISION AT KASSERINE, and will instead only include the Dirk Blennemann treatment of this battle in their upcoming TUNISIA 1943 release. The "Twin-Pack" in essence is now a standard, single game release. Originally, TUNISIA 1943 was slated by Moments in History as a unique "two-different designs on one battle" in a single package. The first design was simply re-issuing the classic and out-of-print DECISION AT KASSERINE game by Vance Von Borries. This is an extremely popular game, originally published in The Wargamer magazine and later released by the now defunct 3W in a boxed format, which retains a solid value on the game collector's market. Equally enticiing is the second design by Dirk Blennemann, based on his highly-regarded TRIUMPHANT FOX and PIERCING THE REICH game system...which now forms the basis of the TUNISIA 1943 game release. According to Critical Hit President, Roy Tapio
