Lying astride the equator between latitudes 4deg.0' North and 1deg.30' South of the equator, and longitudes 30deg.0' East and 35deg.0' East of Greenwich, covering an area of 242,554 km Vegetation in Uganda is extremely diverse a result of the different micro-climates of the country. Vegetation zones can be roughly classified according to the rainfall zones and are generally; Lake region, Northern Region, and the Highlands of the South-East. These are defined according to the climate of the particular areas. Climate
The climate of Uganda cannot be categorised into any single climatic zone, although it has been generally categorised as a 'Modified Tropical' climate. Its central location on the East African Plateau is a major determining factor in the local climate. In reality Uganda has three sub-climatic zones differentiated mainly by altitude and rainfall. Weather data from the following towns are representative of the three regions:

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Uganda achieved independence from the UK in 1962. The dictatorial regime of Idi AMIN (1971-79) was responsible for the deaths of some 300,000 opponents; guerrilla war and human rights abuses under Milton OBOTE (1980-85) claimed another 100,000 lives. During the 1990s the government has promulgated non-party presidential and legislative elections. Area Uganda is 236,040 sq. mi. of which 36,330 sq. km is fresh water, mostly Lake Victoria. Location Uganda is a landlocked countryin terms of ocean accessabiliy bordered on the north by the Sudan, on the east by Kenya, on the west by the Congo, and the south by Tanzania and Rwanda. Coordinates are 1 00 N, 32 00 E. Physical Description Uganda is one large plateau. There are mountain masses in the West, Mufumbiro and the Ruwenzori, and Mt. Elgon in the East. The Mufumbiro mountain range is made up of volcanic highlands over 1,500 meters. It includes Mt. Sabinjo which is 3,645 m and lies at the boundary of Uganda, Congo, and Rwanda, and Mt. Mahavura which is 4,127 m high. The Ruwenzore mountain range, also known as "The Mountains of the Moon" is separated from the Mufumbiro range by a valley. There are several large peaks in this mountain range, including Mt. Elgon, Uganda's highest point. Uganda lies in the upper basin of the White Nile. The Nile runs from Lake Victoria at Jinja, over Owen Falls into Lake Kyoga. From the lake, over Karuma Falls, then Murchinson Falls, the river flows into Lake Albert. The Nile leaves Uganda at Nimule on the Sudan border. Forests Forests cover about 8% of Uganda's land area. Most of the country's forested land lies in the western rift valley area. About 30 to 40 species of wood are exploited, including mahogany, muzizi, nongo, satinwood, muhimbi, Elgon olive and mvule. The most productive forests include the Budongo at the northern end of Lake Albert, Kibale in the Toro district, Kalinzu in the Ankole district, Mabira in the Lake Victoria region, and those of Mount Elgon and the Ruwenzori Mountains.

    Rwanda Geography
Area 10,169 square miles (26,338 square kilometers). Location A de facto boundary existed between Rwanda and Burundi during the period of German control up to World War I. When Rwanda and Burundi became independent states in 1962, they accepted the border as it was defined in the European statutes. Much of this 180-mile boundary follows rivers; these include (from east to west) the Kagera, Alkanyaru, and Luhwa rivers. In the eastern area, the border traverses the Rugwero and Cyohoha lakes. The southern boundary also traverses many swamps. In other regions, especially to the west, Rwanda's borders cross sharply eroded ridges and valleys. The west-central section crosses the Nile-Congo Divide at an elevation of 8,700 feet. The present boundary with the Congo was also defined by the 1910 European agreements. It has remained essentially unchanged and it now divides the modern nations of Congo (Kinshasa), Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. Physical Description Climate Soils Lakes Rwanda has 28 lakes of significant size. Six among the largest are entirely within the national territory: Ruhondo, Muhazi, Mugasera, Ihema, Rwanye and Burera. Three others, Rugwero, Cyohoha and Kivu, are shared with neighboring countries. The largest and most spectacular is Lake Kivu, so large as to seem almost like a sea to the landlocked inhabitants. On the border with Zaire, it lies in western Rwanda at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes, which have been known since the time of the ancient Greeks as the `Mountains of the Moon.' Lake Kivu drains into Lake Tanganyika by the swiftly descending Ruzizi River. The central uplands are drained by the Nyabarongo River and its main tributaries, the Lukarara, Mwogo, Biruruma, Mukungwa, Base, Nyabugogo, and Akanyaru rivers. Rwanda's eastern border is formed by the Akagera River on its way to Lake Victoria.

Uganda covers some 237,000 square kilometres in the east of mainland Africa and is a neighbour to Kenya, Tanzania, Conga and Sudan. Most of Uganda is fairly flat terrain and it is only in the extreme north and south that the land rises up into mountains.
Environmentally Uganda is in a strong position - 25% of the land is fertile and is suitable for farming and growing food. The two dramatically formed lakes, Lake Albert and Lake Kyoga, are a spectacular asset to the countryside, along with the beautiful national parks that are home to many species of wildlife. back Section Menu:
