Most Emiratis are Sunni Muslims subscribing to the Maliki or Hanbali schools of Islamic law. Many of the latter are Wahhabis, though UAE Wahhabis are not nearly as strict and puritanical as the Saudi variety; the UAE is probably the most liberal country in the Gulf but it is still very conservative by Western standards. There are also smaller communities of Ibadi and Shiite muslims. The oddest thing about the UAE's population is that only 500,000 of the 2 million people living in the country are UAE citizens; the rest are expatriates from other Gulf countries, and from Pakistan, Iran and India. Arabic is the official language but English is widely understood. In Dubai, you can also get by practicing your Farsi, the Persian language spoken in Iran. Urdu is spoken by the large number of Pakistani expatriates living in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The UAE's cuisine is the staple Middle Eastern fare of fuul (paste made from fava beans, garlic and lemon), felafel (deep fried balls of chickpea paste served in a piece of Arabic flat bread)

Flag of United Arab Emirates Background:
The Trucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties.
In 1971, six of these states - Abu Zaby (Abu Dhabi), 'Ajman (Ajman), Al Fujayrah (Fujairah), Ash Shariqah (Sharjah), Dubayy (Dubai), and Umm al Qaywayn (Umm al-Qaiwain) - merged to form the UAE. They were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah (Ras al-Khaimah).
The UAE's per capita GDP is not far below those of the leading West European nations. Its generosity with oil revenues and its moderate foreign policy stance have allowed it to play a vital role in the affairs of the region.

Formerly known as the Trucial States, Trucial Coast, or Trucial Oman, the seven constituent emirates were bound to Great Britain by truce (1820) and agreement (1892). After World War II Britain granted autonomy to the emirates, and in 1971 the independent federation was formed; neighboring Qatar and Bahrain, which originally were to be part of the federation, opted for separate statehood.
Following a period of severe internal tensions in the late 1970s, there was progress toward political unity in the 1980s, but rivalry between Abu Dhabi and Dubai has hampered closer cooperation. The United Arab Emirates participated with the international coalition against Iraq during the Gulf War (1991) and since then has expanded its international contacts and diplomatic relations.
A dispute erupted with Saudi Arabia in 1999 over relations with Iran, a traditional enemy; while Saudi Arabia appeared willing to seek improved ties, the emirates still regarded Iran as a foe. More from Columbia Encyclopedia Visit our Polls, Message Board and ArabiaChat page

Photo courtesy of www.emirates.org The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven sovereign states, each controlled by a ruling family. The seven emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain, Ras al-Khaimah, and Fujairah. Situated at the southern rim of the Arabian Gulf, the UAE's territory encompasses an extensive coastline, over 200 islands, and numerous offshore coral reefs. The interior of the nation is split into mountainous and desert regions with scattered oases. Jumairah Mosque
Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate, controlling approximately 85 percent of the nation's total area, while Ajman is the smallest emirate and covers only 250 square kilometers. The emirate of Dubai is perhaps the most internationally recognized center of the UAE, as it regularly plays host to a number of major international sporting events and conferences.
The UAE has grown to become a major international business center and is one of the most successful and stable nations in the Arab world. UAE nationals are among the wealthiest in the region, and the country is arguably the most liberal country among the Gulf states.
