    Geography
    With a total area of 242,000 square kilometres, the United Kingdom encompasses most of the British Isles. The largest island is Great Britain, consisting of England, Scotland and Wales. The next largest is Ireland, consisting of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Ireland, of course, is not part of the United Kingdom. Great Britain is surrounded by water: the English Channel in the south, the North Sea in the east and the Atlantic ocean in the north and west. The longest distance from north to south is just under 1,000 kilometres; from east to west it is about 500 kilometres. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis (1,342 metres) in Scotland. Population The official language is English.
