But numbers fail to tell the real story, and statistics can never meet human needs. People who need help in coming to know God, have problems in their home, or are troubled by any of a multitude of other things that keep people from being happy and fulfilled, need someone who cares. And that's the message of our Fellowship. Because Jesus cares for people, the Assemblies of God is people who care about each other. We are committed to fulfilling a three-fold mission
  • To introduce the lost to Christ; To provide an environment for worshiping God and fellowshiping with others who hold similar values and love for God; To effectively train and nurture believers.

Representatives of World Council of Churches (WCC) member churches will travel to the United States 8-14 November as a "living letter" of compassion to the churches and people of the USA. The WCC executive committee was meeting in Geneva on 11 September when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Committee members, shocked by the news, spontaneously suggested the gesture. The purpose of the visit, which begins in New York, is "to express the solidarity and compassion of the worldwide ecumenical fellowship" to US churches and to "discern together what 11 September and subsequent events mean for the witness of the churches" in the US and elsewhere. The delegation is also coming to reflect on "the long-term consequences" of the attacks and the resulting allied military strikes against Taliban positions and terrorist camps in Afghanistan in the light of the WCC's Decade to Overcome Violence. The board of directors of the US Conference for the WCC, meeting in New York on 2 October, welcomed the visit and affirmed its purpose.

NEW YORK (UMNS) Results of the most extensive survey of congregational life ever conducted in the United States were released March 13.
"Faith Communities in the U.S. Today" has been produced over a five-year period by a coalition known as Faith Communities Today (FACT). The survey of local churches, mosques and synagogues has been funded in part by the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis.
Co-directors of the project are David Roozen and Carl Dudley, faculty members at Hartford (Conn.) Seminary and leaders in the school's Institute for Religion Research.
During a press conference at the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral, Dudley noted that congregations "are reporting their own vitality and their aliveness. They feel good about themselves in this survey.
"Overall, the survey provides a very upbeat window on faith communities today," he said.

Disciples and UCC will vote on ‘Churches Uniting in Christ'
When the UCC General Synod and the Disciples of Christ General Assembly in Kansas City vote in back-to-back actions on July 16, they will set in motion a sweeping plan for a new ecumenical relationship known as Churches Uniting in Christ (CUIC). Churches Uniting in Christ is the result of a dream of Protestant unity that was born in 1960 with a "Consultation on Church Union" (COCU) organized by several mainline denominations. Both the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ were founding members. At first, COCU aimed to unite separated churches into a single body. But that vision changed over the decades, and now the goal is to create a "communion of communions." There will be no institutional "merger" of the churches, and each will retain its independent identity and structure. The proposal that Synod and Assembly will debate in Kansas City is a step in that direction. The Churches Uniting in Christ "will no longer just be ‘consulting' as they did in COCU," says the Rev. Michael Kinnamon, COCU's general secretary. "Although they will not yet be in ‘full communion,' they be taking steps in that direction."

The World Council of Churches had peace heavy on its mind during a recent meeting of the 158-member Central Committee.
It called on the United States to stop threatening Iraq, on Iraq to destroy weapons of mass destruction, on India and Pakistan to dismantle their nuclear arsenals, on Israel to stop its occupation of Palestine, on Palestinians to halt suicide bombings, and again on the U.S. to avoid military involvement in Colombia.
The council even had strong words about violence against the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo and criticized its own member churches for past and present racism, setting in motion a process to redress injuries inflicted by discrimination.
The ecumenical body, which represents more than 300 churches in more than 100 countries, declared that it was “alarmed about the persistent effort of the government of the United States . . . to gather international support for a new military action against Iraq with the stated objective of overthrowing the present government.”
Disciples of Christ General Minister and President Richard L. Hamm was one of 37 leaders to personally counsel the U.S. to use restraint in the possibility of a preemptive strike against Iraq. “The United Nations charter does not permit states to engage in preemptive war,” the church leaders from Britain, Canada and the U.S. said.

Action Alert: Possible U.S. Military Action Against Iraq
Letter to President Bush from religious leaders. Recent news and statements from the U.S administration have raised growing concern that the U.S. is preparing to take military action in Iraq to overthrow the government of Saddam Hussein. Though the Iraqi government oppresses its own people, does not cooperate with the international community, has not met the United Nations' demands to allow weapons inspectors into the country, and may be developing weapons of mass destruction, there are serious questions about the wisdom and justifiability of the use of military force aimed at overthrowing the government of Iraq. Despite these very real concerns, the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), an ecumenical partner of the RCA, appeals to Christians in the West to address their governments about the situation in a letter dated August 5.
