    http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/Rachel_Carson/geology.htm
Site Navigation Geology's Ability To Teach Us About The Earth By Robert C. Smith II and John H. Barnes
"The present is the key to the past" has been a key concept used by geologists in interpreting their field observations since it was first proposed by the pioneering Scottish geologist James Hutton in 1785. It is a reminder to geologists that, by studying modern geologic processes, we can understand what went on in the past to create the features that we find preserved in ancient rocks. This concept is not much different than the "history repeats itself" concept of historians, who usually deal with events that occurred hundreds of years rather than hundreds of thousands or hundreds of millions of years ago. Taken together, these concepts suggest that Earth will, at times, be a scary place in the future.
But is all well with our mature "Mother Earth"? Not necessarily. Without any help from man, and despite the over 4 billion years that Earth has had to settle down, earthquakes such as those at New Madrid, Mo. (1811, magnitude greater than 7), and Charleston, S.C. (1886, magnitude greater than 6), will continue to occur. They will be infrequent, but even with present technology there will be no warning. At present, we cannot even do a very good job of predicting where east-coast earthquakes will occur.
What does the future hold for an Earth dominated by mankind? There will be more landslides and sinkholes than would otherwise be the case because we have a constant need to rearrange the landscape so that we can construct buildings and highways to accommodate an ever-increasing population. Many of these landslides and sinkholes are preventable, but not all will be prevented. Better news coverage in the electronic era will spread news of sinkhole collapses and call attention to municipalities that employ poor storm-water management plans, thus providing disincentive for further development in such places.

An intensified commitment to religious faith and the state. Where doeshistory teach us that this is the path to prosperity and peace?
    http://www.strike-the-root.com/columns/Smith/smith35.html
Strike The Root There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root. Why the State Likes Us Dumb by George F. Smith In the December, 2002 issue of Reader's Digest , two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough sounds off about our need for a knowledge of the past in an article titled "Why History?" Not surprisingly, he fails to make his case.
"We are losing our story," he writes, "forgetting who we are and what it's taken to come this far." He then cites a 1995 Department of Education report which states that half of high school seniors don't know whether Ulysses S. Grant or George Washington showed up at the Battle of Yorktown. Is this an indictment of American students or the state's monopoly on education?
People can graduate with honors from all but a handful of our most prestigious universities, McCullough points out, without having taken a single course in history. The reason: History is over. It's a done deal. Smart people are future-oriented as if the future had no connection to the past.

Ohio—first US state to teach ‘intelligent design’?
8 March, 2002 Ohio may become the first US state to include ‘intelligent design’ in its science standards. A lot depends on the outcome of a meeting on 11 March 2002. A panel of experts will be discussing the merits of including intelligent design in Ohio’s state standards. (Intelligent design is the belief that the ‘irreducible complexity’ of certain biological features, such as the human eye, is evidence for a designer and against blind naturalistic processes. ) The panel discussion, scheduled for 11 March, is sponsored by the standards committee of the Ohio board of education.
