The Harlem Renaissance: a Selective Guide to Materials in the British Library
Jean Kemble The rich surge in African American arts and letters that took place in 1920s was not limited to Harlem, nor even to New York City. However, the intensity of the movement in that city, and the sheer number of black writers, musicians, and scholars who lived and worked in Harlem has ensured that it is forever linked with the era. Almost as suddenly as it had blossomed, Harlem declined into an urban ghetto neglected by outsiders and offering little to its residents. For over thirty years its Renaissance seems to have been all but forgotten. Then, in 1967, the New York Public Library published The Negro in New York, a series of manuscripts prepared by the Federal Writers Project and housed in the Schomburg Collection of the Harlem branch of the Library. The interest in this publication was enormous, and the wealth of information contained in the collection has ensured that it is still being mined by students and scholars today.

Yoneyama's first book, Hiroshima Traces: Time, Space and the Dialectics of Memory (University of California, 1999) examined the politics of remembering the atomic destruction of Hiroshima through an examination of various cultural products and texts. These include city space, nuclear ruins, survivors' testimonials, and ethnic, colonial and gendered narratives around various memorial icons, including the Korean victims' monument. Yoneyama is also co-editor of Perilous Memories: Politics of Remembering the Asia-Pacific War(s) (Duke University Press, 2001). She has published a number of essays in Japanese journals, including

about the journal
North Africa has rarely been treated as a cohesive area of study. Yet its historical and social links have always been strong with most of the countries in it having been part of the Ottoman empire. In part this has been because of its colonial past, with Egypt and Sudan under British control, Libya being first occupied by Italy, then administered by Britain and France, and the Maghreb states of Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania being part of the French colonial empire, with a Spanish presence in parts of Morocco and the Western Sahara. Today, however, the countries concerned are increasingly finding themselves sharing a common destiny. The Journal of North African Studies aims to provide a forum for scholars of and from the region. Its contents cover both country-based and regional themes which range from historical topics to sociological, anthropological, economic, diplomatic and other issues. It is the first journal to offer an opportunity for analysis of the historical and contemporary issues of what has become an important and coherent region of the Mediterranean basin which is also linked to the Middle East and to Africa and which is likely to play an ever more important role in the years to come.

Social Studies - U.S. History Social Studies In Social Studies, the goal is for all students to develop a deep, rich network of understandings related to the world around them. The objectives and competencies included in this curriculum deal with history, geography, economics, and civics from a diverse, global perspective. Students engage in projects that require them to apply Social Studies skills in real-world contexts. U.S. History In this high school course, students apply their developed understanding of history and culture while examining historical content from colonial times to the present day. Instruction should encourage students to use higher-level thinking skills as they study familiar historical, political, economic, and social events and issues from a broader perspective. Students will concentrate on the founding and testing of a new nation, the effect of wars and revolutions, and 19th century movements. The study of U.S. Presidents includes Lincoln, Truman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Kennedy. Recent presidencies of Reagan, Bush, and, currently, Clinton, are also examined. Art, literature, and media should also be used when studying the events of U.S. history.
Cultural Perspective The Cultural Perspective unit includes communities, diversity, fine arts, humanities, folklore, holidays, media, and religious and social issues.

ASCAP Deems Taylor Award Lowens Book Award from the Society for American Music Making Music Modern New York in the 1920s CAROL J. OJA New York City witnessed a dazzling burst of creativity in the 1920s. In this pathbreaking study, Carol J. Oja explores this artistic renaissance from the perspective of composers of classical and modern music, who along with writers, painters, and jazz musicians, were at the heart of early modernism in America. She also illustrates how the aesthetic attitudes and institutional structures from the 1920s left a deep imprint on the arts over the 20th century. American composers active in New York during the 1920s are explored in relation to the "Machine Age" and American Dada; the impact of spirituality on American dissonance; the crucial, behind-the-scenes role of women as patrons and promoters of modernist music; cross-currents between jazz and concert music; the critical reception of modernist music (especially in the writings of Carl Van Vechten and Paul Rosenfeld); and the international impulse behind neoclassicism. The book also examines the persistent biases of the time, particularly anti-Semitisim, gender stereotyping, and longstanding racial attitudes. "Pioneering....This is important history, and [Oja] cover[s] all of it, conservatives and radicals alike, with fascinating sidelights on critics, female patrons of contemporary music and of course on individual composers....[Oja reveals] that modern music in the 20's was diverse and multicultural, with jazz and Latin overtones, women composers and one strong African-American, William Grant Still. And [she shows] that American modernism could be provocatively different from the European kind."
