Social Studies Fall Semester Spring Semester World Studies World Studies World Geography World Geography ... 20th Century U.S. History ECONOMICS: A study of the basic concepts that characterize the U.S. economic system and that contribute to a basic understanding of economics. The market system, capitalism, and free-enterprise will be stressed as well as the basic business organization patterns, banking, production, and trade. Scheduled in sequence with Government. GOVERNMENT: The course will deal with the concepts of government basic to understanding the development of representative, constitutional government in the U.S. The structure, functions, and processes of the federal, state, and local systems of government will be included as well as a study of elections and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. SOCIOLOGY: Sociology is a one-semester course survey of the basic concepts of sociology as an academic discipline. The development and organization of society in groups and the factors that shape and change society will be the basis for the units of study. Unit topics will include: group behavior and organization, culture and its influence on behavior, social change, social institutions, and social problems. The content of these units will be selected to facilitate an understanding of contemporary U.S. Society and its characteristics and problems. Climate and the Greenhouse Effect Earth’s climate is determined by complex interactions between the sun, oceans, atmosphere, land, and living things. The composition of the atmosphere is particularly important because certain gases (including water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, halocarbons, ozone, and nitrous oxide) absorb heat radiated from the Earth's surface. As the atmosphere warms, it in turn radiates heat back to the surface, to create what is commonly called the "greenhouse effect." Changes in the composition of the atmosphere alter the intensity of the greenhouse effect.
