At the end of October 2002, my friend Carson and I took a last minute trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was beyond beautiful. Point a camera in any direction anywhere for a picture perfect postcard. We stayed at the very pleasant Secret Harbour Resort on St. Thomas.
The island culture is an interesting mix of contradictions and hypocrisy, proud heritage with corrupt politics, religious piety yet libidinious partying and drinking, booming business but rampant poverty.
All in all, a fabulous holiday. Thanks to all the locals who made us feel so welcome. The view from Secret Harbour Resort Ahhhh ... to be a kid again. That was me, once upon a time, building countless sand castles complete with irrigation systems to bring in sea water for the moats. Wild iguanas wander the islands More Secret Harbour views A very, very relaxed Dale Sunset at Secret Harbour Sunset at Secret Harbour My view looking up, lying on Solomon Beach on St. John Island Charlotte Amalie Harbour at dusk Fort Christian, build by the Danish conquerers of St. Thomas Red Hook Harbour docks Charlotte Amalie Harbour Cruise ship heading out to sea With the popularity of string bikinis and nude beaches there are many lovely asses to behold on the islands. This was my favorite.

Surrounded by the clear, warm Caribbean Sea surrounding St. Croix, Hotel on the Cay offers 55 units, each with kitchenette, ceiling fans and balcony. With its buff-colored stucco, terra-cotta tiles, and archways, this hotel evokes Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic, but it's the most prominent building on a 3-acre island set in the middle of Christiansted's harbor. Reaching it requires a 4-minute boat ride from a well-marked quay in the town center (hotel guests ride free). Its position in the clear waters of the harbor is both its main plus and its main drawback: Its wide, sandy beaches provide the only pollution-free swimming in the town center. British Virgin Islands There are parts of the British Virgin Islands so beautiful, you'd happily marry the closest iguana just so you could stay there forever. Think green hills, blue skies, tripped out sunsets and beaches where the loudest noise is the donk of a coconut dropping on sand soft as a baby's bot. Once the hideaway of buccaneers and brigands, the islands now attract a more salubrious yachting crew drawn by steady trade winds, well-protected anchorages and a year-round balmy climate. Tourist development has been limited by enlightened environmental policy, giving these islands a thoroughly different character from their raucous neighbors. While the US Virgin Islands have pursued the tourist dollar, the British Virgin Islands have been keen to stay limey and out of the limelight. Area: 59 sq miles (153 sq km)
