VOL. 17 #4 Summer 1997 IDEA/PREVENTIVE MEDICINE. The following was received from Senator Thomas Daschle: "Dear George: Thanks you for your most recent letter regarding preventive medicine cost coverage and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). I appreciate hearing from you."
"Preventive measures have proven to substantially improve the health of people such as your cousin. I have been a long-time supporter of these measures. I hope you are able to resolve your problem with your health insurance provider regarding coverage for these expenses."
"I'd be happy to provide you with a status report on IDEA. As you probably know, a compromise bill reauthorizing IDEA recently passed the Senate and is expected to be signed by the President soon. I was a supporter of this bill, S.717, which balances the interests of school administrators and individuals with disabilities."
"As you may know, IDEA was originally enacted in 1975. At that time, more than one million children with disabilities received no public education and another 3.5 million were unable to receive appropriate programs within their schools. In 1975, the Federal courts recognized that children with disabilities had a Constitutional right to equal educational opportunity. IDEA was enacted to help States and communities meet their obligations. The program currently serves 5.4 million children. Efforts to reauthorize IDEA floundered last year, leading to the development of a bipartisan working group this year."

    http://www.brightword.com/homeschooling-special-needs.html
Ten Steps to Successfully Homeschooling Children with Special Needs If you are a parent of a child with special needs and considering homeschooling, you undoubtedly have many questions and concerns. You’re not alone, but you probably know more about homeschooling than you realize. For example, you’ve spent the first five years of your child’s life as his most important "teacher." In addition, if your child has been in public school, you’ve probably spent many evenings and weekends helping your child do homework. Guess what? You’ve been homeschooling. My husband, Clint, and I have "been there—done that," and now we’re on our tenth year of homeschooling. Our sons Cj (22) and Shane (15) have been diagnosed with attention differences, and had we left them in public school, it is my opinion they would have inherited more labels as well. Has homeschooling been hard? Sometimes. Interesting? Who said living with children with special needs is boring? Can it be done? Yes! Homeschooling isn’t a cure, and it is easier for some families than for others. However, homeschooling has rapidly become a respected alternative, especially for those children with special needs who are being pushed out of public schools. It’s not my place to diagnose, label, or tell you how to homeschool your child with special needs. And the issues of medication and counseling belong within the scope of each family’s decision-making process. However, with the one-on-one learning that parents provide in a homeschool environment, children with special needs can soar.

    Educators for Social Responsibility
ESR's mission is to make teaching social responsibility a core practice in education so that young people develop the convictions and skills needed to shape a safe, sustainable, democratic, and just world. In the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Center and elsewhere, we've issued a call to transform "Crisis into Community," a guide to assist Talking to Children About Violence and Other Sensitive and Complex Issues in the World (Newly updated on Septermber 21, 2001), and a brand new sequel to that guide, "Responding to Violent Events by Building Community: Action Ideas for Students and Schools." Plus, we've added a set of free lessons (latest addition: September 28, 2001) customized to help educators and students discuss and understand the attacks of September 11th, war, peace, conflict, retaliation, prejudice, discrimination, propaganda, and a range of divergent points of view.

The aim is to exchange practical teaching ideas and experiences. Parents, professionals and people with ASD sharing these views and with a genuine interest in the education of children with ASD are welcome to join.
