The measures are also being undertaken in response to last spring's mass murder at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. "We're all kind of on alert and that's not a bad thing. What Columbine did is encourage us to look at our goals, look at our priorities, and make sure we're going in the right direction," said Melinda Rock, spokeswoman for the Jordan School District, the state's largest school district. Jordan, along with other large districts, Granite and Davis, started school Monday. Federal law prohibits students from carrying any weapon to school. The U.S. Department of Education reports fewer students are being expelled for bringing guns to school, but the numbers can be misleading. Utah numbers show increasing weapons violations, including guns or knives. The number rose from 388 violations in the 1996-97 school year to 413 in 1997-98, the State Office of Education reports.

The Aggies have reinstated basketball and will begin play in the 2003-04 season. Scott-Pebley, a former player for the Utah Starzz, has been an assistant coach for four years at George Mason (1998-99) and Colorado State (2000-01).
