ISSUE 3: CONTENT AND SOFTWARE
Educational technology is a tool for teaching and learning about something. Innovative programs are demonstrating that technology can facilitate new ways of teaching and learning challenging content. High-quality software and on-line resources are a vital ingredient for teaching content in all subjects. Ten breakout sessions addressed these issues. A. New Ways of Teaching and Learning
"You can just go to the cowpath and not change, or you can go the other direction and make exciting things happen." -Inabeth Miller Throughout the country, teachers are using technology to restructure their classrooms, implement new instructional techniques, and transform student and teacher roles. "We're at a time where what we know about how people learn and the technology are catching up with each other," said Inabeth Miller, "and we can combine this knowledge to enhance the learning experience." Technology makes it easier for teachers to individualize instruction and for students to engage in self-directed learning. Video, computer, and multimedia technologies can accommodate students with a variety of learning styles more flexibly than conventional materials. Some students, for example, may learn more readily with graphics or sound than through text alone.

Utah Schools Take Olympic Freebies
Associated Press Last Updated: July 18, 2002 at 4:49:05 p.m. SALT LAKE CITY -
Nearly all of the $6 million worth of free, Olympic goodies have found new homes in Utah public schools. Ponchos, drills, printers, microwaves, tables and couches left over from the 2002 Winter Games have been snatched up by the dozens. ``I don't think anyone in our district will have to order another paper clip again,'' said Ron Frandsen, business administrator for the Box Elder school district. The Alpine school district has offered to take whatever's left after the giveaway, but officials there might be disappointed, said Mark Peterson, spokesman for the state Office of Education There are a few racks for drying wet winter clothes, Olympic banners, and garment racks.

The measures are also being undertaken in response to last spring's mass murder at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. "We're all kind of on alert and that's not a bad thing. What Columbine did is encourage us to look at our goals, look at our priorities, and make sure we're going in the right direction," said Melinda Rock, spokeswoman for the Jordan School District, the state's largest school district. Jordan, along with other large districts, Granite and Davis, started school Monday. Federal law prohibits students from carrying any weapon to school. The U.S. Department of Education reports fewer students are being expelled for bringing guns to school, but the numbers can be misleading. Utah numbers show increasing weapons violations, including guns or knives. The number rose from 388 violations in the 1996-97 school year to 413 in 1997-98, the State Office of Education reports.

Although most dental schools require a minimum of three years of predental course work, 85 percent of entering dental students have completed four years of college and 80 percent have completed at least a baccalaureate degree. It is wise to work toward a degree in any area which would serve as an attractive alternative in the event you were deterred from your goal in dentistry. Required and Recommended Courses for Predental Students
All dental schools in the United States require English, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology or zoology, and physics—generally one year of each. A few schools also require biochemistry, microbiology, calculus, psychology, and speech. Courses suggested by many schools include anatomy, embryology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, and course work in humanities, arts, and social sciences. Raegan Scott-Pebley Named Women's Basketball Coach Former Utah Starzz player to lead Aggies.
Raegan Scott-Pebley, former WNBA player and Utah State's new women's basketball coach, answers questions during a news conference on Wednesday.
May 1, 2002 LOGAN, Utah - Raegan Scott-Pebley (Pee-blee) was named the women's basketball coach at Utah State University Director of Athletics Rance Pugmire announced on Wednesday. The Aggies have reinstated basketball and will begin play in the 2003-04 season. Scott-Pebley, a former player for the Utah Starzz, has been an assistant coach for four years at George Mason (1998-99) and Colorado State (2000-01). She was a four-year letterwinner at Colorado before being a third-round draft pick by the Starzz in 1997. She also spent one season with the Eastern Division champion Cleveland Rockers in 1998. "Raegan emerged from an outstanding pool of applicants," Pugmire said. "Her relationships in the state and the western region are incredible and helped separate her from the group. She and (husband) Keith will be a perfect fit for the University and our community and they will both generate a great amount of enthusiasm for the program as we gear up for the first year of competition." "I think that it is important that the faculty, staff, students, Rance Pugmire, and President Hall be commended for their hard work in the search," Scott-Pebley said. "They did a throrough job and I know they called everyone on my reference list. The students should be acknowledged for getting this whole thing going. Without their support in wanting women's basketball again, I would not be in this position, nor would anyone else."
