In the 8th century the armies of an Arab caliph invaded Mawarannahr ("The Land Beyond River"), the territory between the Amudarya river, the Syrdarya river and the land of Khorasan lying to the south of the Amudarya river. This conquest brought a new religion that had risen in Saudi Arabia called Islam. At the same time, there was fire-worship and other religions such as Buddhism, Judaism and Christianity. Since then Islam has dominated far beyond this region and became an extremely important part of its culture. Mawarannahr was one of the most advanced caliphate regions playing a significant role in social and cultural life. The Great Silk Road linked the West with the Orient and people from southern and northern countries passed through this land. The Mawarannahr towns of Bukhara, Samarkand and Kunya-Urgench were the crossroads of caravan routes from India, China, Egypt, Byzantium, Slavic countries and Arabia.

As far back as in the pre-Islamic period, Zoroastrism the world spread religious system was born on the territory of the present day Uzbekistan (in Khorezm) and became common property of all mankind. There was formed the highest technological culture of those times: town-planning, irrigation systems, armory, silk-weaving, cultivation of grain, cotton, grapes and fruits. Its people are more settled than nomadic, with patterns of land use and social structures that changed little from the 6th century BC to the 19th century. The region was part of several very old Persian states. During the 4th century BC, Alexander the Great passed through and married the daughter of a local chieftain near Samarkand. Under the Kushan empire, Buddhism took hold and the Silk Road brought peaceful contact with the wider world. Towns grew and the area became rich. In the 6th century AD, Western Turks rode out of the steppes, bringing Islam and a written alphabet. When they moved on to greener pastures, Persia took over again, until Jenghiz Khan and his hordes rolled over the country. With the rise of the ruthless warrior Timur in the 14th century, Uzbekistan again rose to prosperity and Samarkand became a glittering Islamic capital thanks to his patronage of the arts. Around this time, certain Mongol tribes took the name Uzbek. In the 14th century they began moving south, eventually conquering Timur's empire. By 1510 they had control of everything from the Amu-Darya to the Syr-Darya, and they have maintained control ever since. In the early 18th century the khan of Khiva asked Peter the Great of Russia for aid in defending his land against Turkmen and Kazaks, stirring the first Russian interest in Central Asia. However, by the time the Russians got around to marching on Khiva, the khan no longer wanted their help and massacred almost the entire army. Apart from a few minor forays, the next major Russian excursion was made in 1839 by Tsar Nicholas I, who was eager to prevent British expansion in the area, but the mission was not a great success. Twenty-five years later the Russians again made a serious move on Uzbekistan and by 1875 the region was theirs.

UZBEKISTAN The heart of central Asia, Uzbekistan is today made up of peoples descended from Mongol, Turkic, and Iranian tribes, along with indigenous nomadic peoples. Russia's conquest of the Uzbeks commenced in the 18th century and the region was totally under Russian control by 1876. This dominance was solidified with the construction of the Transcaucasian Railway that linked the major cities of the territory. The influx of ethnic Russians was not well-received by the local peoples at the turn of the 20th century. Rioting broke out then and 18 years later, right before the Soviets established their control over the region. In 1924, the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic was created. For the next several years, attempts were made quash Islam and its adherent in Uzbekistan. At the same time, the Soviets tried to improve literacy and expand the industrial capabilities of the country. During the second World War, much industry was transferred to this relatively remote area to protect it from attack. The northwest is largely part of the Kyzyl Kum desert and borders the Aral Sea in the extreme north; the southeast has fertile loess soil and touches on the Tian Shan mountains. The Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers pass through the country, providing irrigation for its farms. The Uzbek, a Turkic-speaking people, make up the majority of the population; other groups include Russians, Tajiks, Kazakhs, and Tatars. Sunni Islam is the predominant religion, and the Orthodox Church is the largest non-Islamic faith. Uzbek is the official language, but Russian and other ethnic languages are also spoken. Toshkent city (1992 estimated population 2,133,000) is the capital of Uzbekistan in the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains. The largest central Asian city, and among the oldest, it is the economic heart of the region. First mentioned in the 1st century BC, Toshkent came under Arabic rule (7th century AD) and passed to Khorezm (12th century). It fell (13th-15th century) to Jenghiz Khan, Timur, and the Uzbeks.
