PRESIDENT MARTIN VAN BUREN
The good luck which led to Van Buren's ascent to the presidency turned sour during his one term as president. In 1836, Jackson withdrew federal deposits from the Bank of America in Philadelphia and allotted it to banks around the country and removed restrictions on inflationary practices of some state banks. This created a boom in investments initially, but it led to a bust when consumer confidence in banks dwindled. During Van Buren's presidency hundreds of banks and other businesses failed in what was at the time the worst depression the U.S. history. Also during Van Buren's term a boundary dispute with Canada erupted, relations between the U.S. and Mexico grew tense due to a dispute over what later became Texas, and "the Trail of Tears" led to the death or forced removal of thousands of Native Americans from their homes.
In 1840 Van Buren was soundly defeated by a campaign by William Henry Harrison and John Tyler ("Tippecanoe and Tyler too"). In 1848, Van Buren made an unsuccessful bid for the presidency as candidate for the the Free-Soil Party, a party of Northerners opposed to the expansion of slavery into the western territories.
Following his political career, Van Buren spent two years traveling through Europe. He then retired to a mansion in Kinderhook, N.Y. Martin Van Buren died on July 24, 1862.

Richard M. Johnson Born: December 5, 1782
Kinderhook, New York Occupation: Lawyer Married Hanna Hoes Died: July 24, 1862 Kinderhook, New York Early Years:
Van Buren studied at the Kinderhook Academy until he left at 13 to work in a local law firm. As a teenager, he won many law cases and became successful in politics . His Presidency: Van Buren's term was marked by an economic depression. An independent treasury system was established and sound money loans were made available through local banks. Van Buren skillfully negotiated a boundary dispute with Canada. He refused to admit Texas to the Union, as that would cause war with Mexico. He was a good president at the sacrifice of popularity. His Life: Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously. His impeccable appearance belied his amiabilityand his humble background. Of Dutch descent, he was born in 1782, the son of a tavern keeper and farmer, in Kinderhook, New York.

“Martin Van Buren was the son of a truck farmer/innkeeper. He met politicians who stopped by the inn on their way to and from the state capital. He became a law clerk at the age of fourteen after attending a village school. By twenty-one he had a successful law practice. He was ambitious as a politican. He was nicknamed ‘Little Magician’ because of his political prowess and his small size. He helped Andrew Jackson win the presidency, and as a reward Jackson appointed him secretary of state and then vice president. In 1836, Van Buren was elected President. Soon after, the nation suffered a financial depression. Van Buren’s popularity decreased because of the financial panic, border disputes and accusations from pro-slavery and anti-slavery leaders. He was defeated in his bed for a second term and a third time in 1848 when he ran on the Free Soil Party ticket – a group opposed to slavery.”

Martin Van Buren
Martin Van Buren
Reproduction of 1839 painting by Henry Inman Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook in 1782, soon after a fragile union of states successfully ended its fight for independence. His parents kept a tavern and, like their Dutch predecessors of 150 years, made a moderate living farming in the Hudson Valley. Young Martin, possessed of a fine mind and a strong ambition, embarked on a legal career at 14 with an apprenticeship to a local attorney. In 1804 he joined his half-brother's law practice in their home town. Three years later Van Buren married a distant relative and childhood sweetheart, Hannah Hoes. Meanwhile, he was becoming known as more than a country lawyer. His first appointed post, as a county official, set him on an upward course that led to the highest office in the state, and eventually, the nation. Early 19th century politics was a whirlwind of boisterous characters and opposing interest groups where a new party system was taking shape. Van Buren artfully positioned himself in the eye of the storm, persistently advocating the principles of the Jeffersonian Republicans, namely states' rights, strict constitutional construction, and civil liberties. His efforts, along with those of like-minded politicians brought about an alliance of the "planters of the South and the plain people of the North" to form the Democratic Party. During the administration of the new party's first president, the enormously popular Andrew Jackson, Van Buren served as Old Hickory's top advisor. As the eighth President (and the first to be born under the US flag) Martin Van Buren continued the the era of Jacksonian Democracy. Not until his defeat for the presidency in 1848 did Van Buren give up public life.

Martin Van Buren In 1832, Van Buren became vice president; in 1836, president. The Panic of 1837 overshadowed his term. He attributed it to the overexpansion of the credit and favored the establishment of an independent treasury as repository for the federal funds. In 1840, he established a 10-hour day on public works. Defeated by Harrison in 1840, he was the leading contender for the Democratic nomination in 1844 until he publicly opposed immediate annexation of Texas, and was subsequently beaten by the Southern delegations at the Baltimore convention. This incident increased his growing misgivings about the slave power. After working behind the scenes among the anti-slavery Democrats, Van Buren joined in the movement that led to the Free-Soil Party and became its candidate for president in 1848. He subsequently returned to the Democratic Party while continuing to object to its pro-Southern policy. He died in Kinderhook on July 24, 1862. His

Martin Van Buren, (1782-1862), van byoor'[sch ]n, 8th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Rising from a background of machine politics in New York state, he gained national prominence as secretary of state and then VICE PRESIDENT in the administration of Andrew JACKSON Early Life The son of Abraham Van Buren, a tavern keeper and truck farmer, and Maria Hoes Van Buren, the future president was born in Kinderhook, N.Y., on Dec. 5, 1782. Martin attended the village school and Kinderhook Academy. At the age of 14 he began to read law with a local attorney and was admitted to the bar when only 21. He developed a successful law practice in Kinderhook and became involved in local politics, finding his clients and followers in the small farmers and shopkeepers of the community, whose cause he defended against the large landowners. In 1807, Van Buren married his sprightly distant cousin and former classmate Hannah Hoes, with whom he enjoyed almost 12 years of domestic happiness. Before her death in 1819, Hannah bore her husband four sons and saw him achieve a position of eminence in New York legal and political circles. Van Buren's first political office was that of surrogate, which he held until election to the state senate in 1812. He went to Albany at a time when New York politics were characterized by a struggle for power between the two factions of the Democratic-Republican party: the followers of the ruthless and ambitious DeWitt Clinton, and the rival anti-Clinton crowd, known as the "Bucktails." Van Buren became the legislative leader of the Bucktails, whose support enabled him to win appointment as attorney general in 1816. He lost the office in 1819 after Clinton was elected governor and made a clean sweep of Bucktail officeholders.
