Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) Education and Occupations: Education: Van Buren studied Latin briefly at the Kinderhook Academy. He received no formal education after the age of 14 (1796). He studies law under Francis Sylvester from 1796-1802. Van Buren finished his law studies under William P. Van Ness in 1803. He was admitted to the bar in 1803. Occupations: From 1803-1807, Van Buren practiced law with his half brother, James Van Alen. He was appointed as the surrogate to Columbia County in 1808, and he served until 1811. A New York State Senator from 1812-1820, Van Buren supported the War of 1812, while condemning the imprisonment of debtors and campaigning against fraudulent bank practices. Van Buren served as the state attorney from 1815-1820, while continuing to serve as a state senator. He attended a state constitutional convention in 1821, during which he attempted to break down barriers which were delaying the adoption of popular suffrage and other reforms. As a U.S. Senator from 1821-1828, Van Buren opposed President Monroe's attempts to lure Federalists to the Republican party; and during his terms in Senate, he emerged as a prominent architect of the Democratic party (formerly the Jeffersonian Republican party). He disliked Federal programs that encouraged a strong central government at the expense of state rights. As the leader of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he was an outspoken critic of the Supreme Court, especially in relation to its practice of judicial review. Van Buren supported William H. Crawford in the election of 1824. He was the Senate's strongest opposer of John Quincy Adams' nationalist practices from 1825-1828. In the election of 1828, he supported Andrew Jackson, whom he believed to be the only candidate who would be able to unite the country under a plan that mirrored Jeffersonian Republican principles.

Biography: Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously. His impeccable appearance belied his amiabilityand his humble background. Of Dutch descent, he was born in 1782, the son of a tavernkeeper and farmer, in Kinderhook, New York. As a young lawyer he became involved in New York politics. As leader of the "Albany Regency," an effective New York political organization, he shrewdly dispensed public offices and bounty in a fashion calculated to bring votes. Yet he faithfully fulfilled official duties, and in 1821 was elected to the United States Senate. By 1827 he had emerged as the principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson. President Jackson rewarded Van Buren by appointing him Secretary of State. As the Cabinet Members appointed at John C. U.S. Presidents: Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) Brief biography of the first president to be born after the Revolutionary War followed by summaries of significant events of his administration. Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, New York, in 1782 making him the first United States president born after the Revolutionary War. At the age of 18 he was already active in New York politics serving as a member of a nominating convention. Van Buren was admitted to the New York bar in 1803. In 1821 he became a United States Senator and served in the Senate until his election to the New York governorship in 1828. During that election year, Van Buren had enthusiastically supported Andrew Jackson and in 1829 President Jackson appointed him Secretary of State. Van Buren resigned after two years, but in 1831 was elected Vice-President for Jackson's second term. Van Buren himself was elected president in 1836 by a small margin of the popular vote. Van Buren's four years in the White House were clouded by financial panic. To help stabilize the economy, Van Buren obtained from Congress approval for a new treasury department separate from private or state banks. This new department, combined with his adherence to a non-interference policy during the Canadian rebellion in 1837 were unpopular with the voters. Van Buren lost his bid for re-election in 1840 to the Whig candidate. After his defeat, he toured the western states, meeting with both Andrew Jackson in Tennessee, and Henry Clay in Kentucky. During this time Van Buren publicly disapproved of the annexation of Texas which he felt would provoke a war with Mexico. He sought re-election in 1844, but lost the party nomination because of his views on Texas.

Martin Van Buren In 1832, Van Buren became vice president; in 1836, president. The Panic of 1837 overshadowed his term. He attributed it to the overexpansion of the credit and favored the establishment of an independent treasury as repository for the federal funds. In 1840, he established a 10-hour day on public works. Defeated by Harrison in 1840, he was the leading contender for the Democratic nomination in 1844 until he publicly opposed immediate annexation of Texas, and was subsequently beaten by the Southern delegations at the Baltimore convention. This incident increased his growing misgivings about the slave power. After working behind the scenes among the anti-slavery Democrats, Van Buren joined in the movement that led to the Free-Soil Party and became its candidate for president in 1848. He subsequently returned to the Democratic Party while continuing to object to its pro-Southern policy. He died in Kinderhook on July 24, 1862. His
