WELCOME!
Read below to find out why we're here... "What we're into is the total restructuring of society. What is happening in America today...is not simply a chance situation in the usual winds of change... (it is) a total transformation of society... You can't get away from it. You can't go into rural areas, you can't go into the churches, you can't go into government or into business and hide... Schools are no longer in the schooling business, but rather in human resource development...we have an opportunity to develop the kind of society we want." Shirley McCune, Senior Director of the Mid-Continent Regional Educational Laboratory doing research for the U.S. Department of Education. Keynote speaker at the 1989 Governor's Conference on Education called by President Bush.
One of our favorite columnists, Bob Holland, writes a compelling piece on the ESEA for Free Republic.com - wonderfully informative and well worth your time! Jerry Smiley, VPIE member from New Haven, has produced an in-depth critique of the Vermont Standards and the relation of those Standards to those now law by rule.To compare, please read: Vermont Standards
VPIE Critique of Vermont Standards
The critique also addresses the Vermont Department of Education/State Board of Education "Proposed School Quality Standards" in a sequential, item-by-item manner, with page references to the Proposal as published 4/23/98.

VERMONT COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
Community partnerships have been developed across the State to ensure collaborative efforts among schools, human service organizations, families, and other community members and organizations. The goal of these partnerships is to design effective community-wide strategies to improve the well-being of children and their families.
Vermont has received funding support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and from the Department of Justice's Caring Communities Program to support several communities in developing strong partnerships around needs assessment, planning, collaborative service delivery, methods of pooling funds, cross-disciplinary professional development, and comprehensive system-wide performance and outcome evaluation.
All 12 districts of the Agency of Human Services have received some financial support to strengthen their community partnerships.

The Tests of General Education Development (GED) are five tests that, when successfully passed, provide adults who did not finish high school with a second opportunity to earn a high school completion credential. Employers, the military, and college and technical educators and institutions recognize and accept the GED. The tests are designed to measure and represent the knowledge, skills, and understanding that current high school seniors would learn from their high school education. TOP Description
The GED was originally developed in 1942 for returning World War II servicemen who had their high school education interrupted by the call to service. In Vermont, adults 18 and over, and students age 16 (with parental permission) may take the GED Tests if they are not enrolled in high school at the time they take the tests. In Vermont an average of between 1500 and 2000 persons, ranging in age from 16 to 60+, test each year. For more detailed information about the GED test, visit the national GED website at
