The Vermont Army National Guard maintains 26 armories, and is present in 22 communities. The men and women of the Vermont National Guard are dedicated, combat ready citizen soldiers, committed to serving their community, state, and nation, while facing future challenges and opportunities united in spirit as one Guard. The Vermont Army National Guard went through many reorganizations in the 1960s. The Vermont Guard went from being part of the 43rd Division to the 50th Armored Division and in 1988 the Brigade rejoined the 26th Yankee Division. At the present time, Vermont's Brigade is part of the 42nd Infantry Division. Vermont has a unique history of citizen soldiers that goes back to the beginning of the country. Tracing their legacy to the Green Mountain Boys of the Revolutionary War, today's Vermont National Guard is as relevant today as it carries on the militia tradition in our nation's defense. The original militia company of the Vermont National Guard was formed on October 24, 1764. Eleven years later, on May 10, 1775, Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys crossed Lake Champlain and captured Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War. According to Allens memoirs he demanded the surrender of the Fort "in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress." Another account written just days after the daring conquest reported that Allen's words were decidedly more down-to-earth: "Come on out you old rat!" Some historians believe that it was the Vermont 2nd Brigade that turned the tide of the Civil War in favor of the North, when they flanked the confederate charge under General Pickett at the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.

Higher education is a significant industry in Vermont, employing an estimated 8,500 people. In 1996, more than 45,000 students were enrolled in public and private universities and colleges in Vermont. The largest and oldest institution, the University of Vermont in Burlington, was founded in 1791. Norwich University in Northfield, established in 1819, is the oldest private military college in the United States. Vermont's 376 public elementary and secondary schools include 16 area vocational centers and several one-room schoolhouses in small communities. There are also more than 40 approved private schools. Emma Willard, a crusader for women's rights in education, was a Vermonter, as was John Dewey, who is regarded as the father of modern progressive education in America. Recently, Vermont schools have received national acclaim for innovating programs that include multi-grade classes in elementary schools, student writing projects, and use of student "portfolios" to measure learning progress rather than traditional grade cards.

21) Vermont Developmental Reading (VT-DRA): The Vermont DRA is a standards-based reading assessment administered individually to each second-grade student. Each student reads a short book and retells the story in his or her own words. Using uniform methods and guidelines, teachers score the student's oral reading for accuracy and the retelling for comprehension. Students must show real understanding of the text, not simply pronounce the words. As books become more difficult, visuals such as illustrations and type size vary along with vocabulary and text complexity The Vermont DRA was adapted from the original Developmental Reading Assessment published by Celebration Press. Extensive modification of the assessment, for statewide assessment purposes, was undertaken by the Vermont Department of Education, the University of Vermont and the Northeast and Islands Regional Lab at Brown University. The School Report shows the number of students with valid assessments and the percent of students scoring in the highest two performance levels - achieved the standard and achieved the standard with honors.

Students at Vermont Law School today filed a complaint in federal court challenging the constitutionality of a federal statute, the "Solomon-Pombo Amendment," that subjects them to discrimination. The filing of the suit is timed to coincide with a visit of United States Army, Judge Advocate General Corps ("JAG") recruiters to Vermont Law School today. The statute is an obscure rider to a federal appropriations bill that has attracted little attention. It directs the federal Department of Education to withhold education aid from institutions of higher education who refuse to act as employment agents for the Defense Department, which discriminates against homosexuals. Federal courts have upheld the military's power to discriminate within their own ranks, but discrimination by employment agencies is illegal under Vermont law, and the students claim that compelling Vermont schools to act as unwilling agents of discrimination is unconstitutional. Since passage of the Solomon-Pombo Amendment, JAG has demanded access to the law school campus and law-school assistance in recruiting, although it is barred by Vermont law and the school's own policies because of JAG's admitted policies of discrimination. In past years military recruiters have interviewed and hired Vermont students at other locations, and not once in the ten years preceding enactment of the SolomonPombo Amendment have they requested access to the law school campus. The students who filed the complaint contend that JAG recruiters are visiting to enforce a Congressional ideology, rather than to meet any supposed military need for Vermont law students.

between a man and his death but a piece of string has left
no one unmoved...except those who don't jump." - Sir Bernard Fall
The US Army Airborne School, located at Fort Benning, Georgia, is available to cadets that are enrolled in the program. The course is three weeks long, consisiting of a ground week, tower week, and jump week. With each week comes a different type of training designed to teach you how to parachute out of airplanes and helicopters. "Jump School" can be the first step in the journey of a lifetime. Whether running through Fort Benning at daybreak or parachuting from a C-141, Airborne School will be an experience you will never forget. Once you've successfully completed your fifth jump, you earn the coveted silver wings of an airborne soldier. Air Assault School Air Assault training is available at different Army posts across the country. Your adventure begins with Zero Day: an obstacle course designed to exhaust even the most physically fit, followed by a brisk run of two miles in the summer sun. Then the real fun begins. Over the next two weeks, you learn to establish helicopter landing zones, execute a night air assault mission, rig and sling load helicopters for cargo missions, and rappel from a UH-60 Blackhawk hovering 100 feet above the ground. Cap it off with a three-hour, twelve mile road march and you'll understand why the soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division walk with a distinctive swagger of confdence. They've earned it, and so can you.

The Orchard Lake Schools are located on a 120- acre lakeside campus in southeastern Michigan, Orchard Lake some twenty-seven miles northwest of Detroit.
They founded by Father Joseph Dabrowski to serve as spiritual, educational, cultural, and civic leader, so that newly-arriving Polish immigrants as well as their descendants could cherish and preserve the rich heritage of their forefathers, as expressed in their religious beliefs and traditions, their customs and their practices.
Click on the picture to see a different view HISTORY OF MICHIGAN MILITARY ACADEMY (1877- 1909) Established in September of 1877 by Col. Joseph Sumner Rogers, who fought in the Civil War in the First and Second Battles of Bull Run. The Academy was modeled after the Pennsylvania Military Academy and Norwich Military University of Vermont. It was the state's first institution of practical, civil, and military engineering. Because of financial necessity, it closed on December 30, 1908. The property, which included eight buildings, several hundred feet of lake-front property, and 70 acres was sold to SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary during the rectorate of Fr. Witold Buhaczkowski, second rector. The move from Detroit to Orchard Lake began July 20, 1909. Classes began September 9,1909, for some 350 students. Thus began a new era for the Seminary. Three distinct schools were created in 1927 to adapt to the American school system: St. Mary's Preparatory, St. Mary's College, and SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary.

Universities bow to Pentagon on military recruiters' access
The Associated Press
Law schools at the University of Southern California, Harvard and other institutions said they have bowed to demands of the Pentagon to give military recruiters access to students or risk the loss of federal funds.
The schools have been warned in recent weeks that their universities' federal research funds could be cut off if they do not allow military recruiters to interview students, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
The law schools are among the final holdouts in a struggle between the military and many of the nation's universities over the Defense Department's "don't ask, don't tell" rules about homosexuals.
Several university officials and faculty members speculated that the Pentagon has been emboldened to pursue stricter enforcement because of strong support from Congress and others for the war on terrorism.
"Unfortunately, we no longer have a choice," said Rob Saltzman, associate dean of the USC law school, where military recruiters last week took part in the school's official interview program for the first time in more than a decade.
In the mid-1990s, Congress passed laws that linked certain categories of federal funding for law schools to the degree of access military recruiters were given to students.
