Veterinary Medicine Humic and fulvic acids are main components of humus, which again forms the soil organic matter. Especially in organic farming, in agriculture and horticulture, but also in greenhouse-farming, humic acids both in liquid and soluble granule, are applied as plant growth stimulants and soil conditioner. Humates have a very high biological activity, they improve the immunity, the plant metabolism and promote the development of root-systems. Sodium- and potassium salts of humic acids - also called humates - are applied to combat environmental pollution caused by toxic impacts of herbicides, pesticides and heavy metals. Humic substances immobilize heavy metals, they remedy degraded and contaminated soils. Also they are applied in drinking water- and waste water treatment, in erosion control, waste disposal and in the prEvntion of excess salinated soils. Wastewater treatment and additive drilling fluids are one of the main industrial segments for using sodium and potassium humates, which have been won from lignites/ leonardites. Our sodium humates are applied as natural colorants in the paper- and cardboard-industry. Furthermore they are used for the immobilization of enzymes, as absorbents, adsorbents, defoamers, in the battery industry, and finally as liquefiers in the ceramics-, cement- and concrete-industry. Various research trials conducted worldwide have all shown positive results concerning the use of humic substance as an organic feed ingredient. Humic substances a not only the immune system of animals is improved, by forming a protection film on the mucosa cells of the intestinal system, humic acids provide a resorptive effect of e.g. toxic substances. Furthermore the addition of sodium humate has antibacterial, adsorptive and ergotropic effects. Humic acids may also serve as an alternative to antibiotics.

UF CVM Research! A key part of the college's mission involves basic and clinical research conducted by its faculty and graduate students. Funded primarily through external sources, including a variety of state and federal agencies, research at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine also is supported internally through grants administered by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. NCRR's Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) supports research training and career development through the following awards: Comparative Medicine Career Development Opportunities (K01) Special Emphasis Research Career Awards (SERCA) The SERCA in Pathology and Comparative Medicine provides five years of support to assist veterinarians motivated toward research careers to develop new skills and knowledge necessary to become independent biomedical investigators in animal-based research. Faculty Homepage Strategy Mission: to provide the academic and physical environment to foster science at the highest international level, and thus to be pivotal players in the knowledge driven economy, through targeted research in comparative medicine. The Faculty will focus on the need for fundamental research in the post-genomic environment to enrich and develop understanding of cellular functions in health and disease across species. The Faculty will strengthen links between laboratory-based science and clinical application to ensure that veterinary medicine and general biomedical science derive maximum benefit from our comparative research expertise. The Faculty's plans for development of its Garscube campus site require the expansion and upgrading of its existing research laboratory space. A major initiative in this respect is the construction of a core facility for the Institute of Comparative Medicine which will link our existing research blocks and bring all laboratory researchers on the site under one roof. The University has decided to allocate a portion of these funds to support outstanding multi-disciplinary research of strategic importance to Penn. Scientists within each school are encouraged to apply for exploratory/developmental grants in: Bioterrorism and Emerging Infectious Diseases For the purposes of this program, Bioterrorism is defined as the distribution of a biological agent in such a way as to cause widespread havoc. The ideal biowarfare agent is easily prepared, readily disseminated, transmitted from person to person efficiently, and causes high morbidity and mortality. CDC-defined Class A and C agents will receive priority. Emerging infectious diseases include pathogens that have become greater public health problems in recent years either because of recent transmission into the human population or that have become more prevalent due to drug resistance, breakdowns in the public health system, broader dissemination, or other factors. The committee plans to select a different scientific topic in future years.
