Culture The Vietnamese people have had very old, diversified, and rich in national cha racteristics well-known cultures from time immemorial, such as the ones Nui Do (Thanh Hoa) Son Vi (Phu Tho), Hoa Binh Bac Son, especially the one of Dong Son, that flourished gloriously and was closely connected to the Red river wet rice civilization and the kingdoms of Au Lac, and finally the ones of Sa Huynh and Oc Eo... Through many historical upheavals, a great number of historical vestiges had been destroyed and lost, but up to now, we still have over 7300 vestiges, more than 1500 among them have been classified. The most well-known old cultural vestiges that still remain such as the Phong Chau vestiges of the Hung Kings, the Co Loa citadel, the My Son Holy Land, the Old Capital City of Hue of minor and great feudalistic regimes, and the most representative centres of history and culture of Vietnam are mainly concentrated in Hanoi which has the greatest vestiges density in the whole nation. Other aspects of Vietnam culture are realized in the non-material ones such as legends, festivals, customs, music and songs bearing quite particular characteristics.

Culture
Four great philosophies and religions have shaped the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity. Over the centuries, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism have melded with popular Chinese beliefs and ancient Vietnamese animism to form what is known as Tam Giao (or 'Triple Religion'). Vietnamese (kinh) is the official language of the country, although there are dialectic differences across Vietnam. There are dozens of different languages spoken by various ethnic minorities and Khmer and Loatian are spoken in some parts. The most widely spoken foreign languages in Vietnam are Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), English, French and Russian, more or less in that order. Popular artistic forms include: traditional painting produced on frame-mounted silk; an eclectic array of theatre, puppetry, music and dance; religious sculpture; lacquerware and ceramics. Vietnamese cuisine is especially varied - there are said to be nearly 500 different traditional dishes that include exotic meats (but think twice before you eat a rare animal) and fantastic vegetarian creations (often prepared to replicate meat and fish dishes). However, the staple of Vietnamese cuisine is plain white rice dressed up with a plethora of vegetables, fish (which is common in Vietnam), meat, spices and sauces. Spring rolls, noodles and steamed rice dumplings are popular snacks, and the ubiquitous soups include eel and vermicelli, shredded chicken and bitter soups. Fruit is abundant; some of the more unusual ones include green dragon fruit, jujube, khaki, longan, mangosteen, pomelo, three-seed cherry and water apple. Vietnamese coffee

vietnam culture camp
June 19-22, 2003
St. Olaf College Northfield, MN
Vietnam Culture Camp is a family camp held annually in Minnesota. A true community of adopted Vietnamese children, parents, siblings, and extended families come to celebrate and share Vietnamese heritage and culture, meet old and new friends, and have lots of fun! The Culture Camp has two purposes: to enhance self-esteem for children adopted from Vietnam and to establish an appreciation of Vietnamese heritage and culture through "community" interaction. In our first year we had 44 families from 8 different states and over 70 children; in our second year we had 60 families from 13 states and over 100 children joined the celebration! By popular demand, for 2003 we have added one more day - the fun will begin Thursday evening and end Sunday at noon. "The best part about camp was simply connecting with other families like ours. There was a tremendous sense of community and enthusiasm born out of our shared experience. It was wonderful to hear about everyone's journeys and to be able to bore other people to tears with ours. If you lived in a dorm in college, you'll relate to the joys of shared living in St. Olaf's Ytterboe Hall: not a lot of sleep, but great conversation and lots of laughter.
Finally, I have to say that my favorite camp moment took place in the cafeteria. It happened as I was making one of my multiple trips to the dessert section. As I passed a table of families, I heard a sweet three year old voice call out from behind me, "Hi Baby Jack's mom!". I felt I truly had arrived."

RELIGION
Vietnam contains a rich mixture of religions, reflecting the influences of many cultures. Traditional Vietnamese religion included elements from Indian beliefs and three Chinese religious systems: Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Other religions include relatively new sects such as Hoa Hao, associated with Buddhism, and Caodaism, a synthesis of Christianity, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Christianity, particularly the Roman Catholic church, claims as many as 6 million followers. THE ARTS
Poetry has long been the most popular and powerful form of literature in Vietnam, and poets have always been highly respected. Most people can recite at least a few verses of "Kim Van Kieu," a poem that deals with love and sacrifice. This work of more than 3,000 lines was written by the poet Nguyen Du, who lived during the late 1700's and early 1800's.
Novels began to gain wide popularity in Vietnam during the years of French rule. They remain popular, especially in the south. But the Communist leaders now carefully regulate the books the people may read.
Vietnamese painting shows the influence of both ancient Chinese and modern French art. Examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture include mostly pagodas (temples), tombs, and old royal palaces.

T he richness of Vietnam's origins is evident throughout its culture. Spiritual life in Vietnam is a grand panoply of belief systems, including Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Tam Giao (literally 'triple religion'), which is a blend of Taoism, popular Chinese beliefs, and ancient Vietnamese animism. The most important festival of the year is Tet, a week-long event in late January or early February that heralds the new lunar year and the advent of spring. Celebration consists of both raucous festivity (fireworks, drums, gongs) and quiet meditation. In addition to Tet, there are about twenty other traditional and religious festivals each year. As a language, Vietnamese is exceptionally flexible and lyrical, and poetry plays a strong role in both literature and the performing arts. Folk art, which flourished before French colonization, has experienced a resurgence in beautiful woodcuts, village painting, and block printing. Vietnamese lacquer art, another traditional medium, is commonly held to be the most original and sophisticated in the world. Music, dance, and puppetry, including the uniquely Vietnamese water puppetry, are also mainstays of the country's culture.

These ends are connected by a mountainous spine that runs along the South China Sea. On the west, Vietnam is bordered by Laos and Cambodia, and to the north, lies China. The food of the north, through stir-fries and noodle-based soups, shows the heavy influence of Chinese cooking. The mountainous middle section, with the former Imperial capitol, Hue, at its center, has an abundance of fresh produce.

Vietnamese Culture Camp
By Kirk Savage When the Catalyst Foundation's 1st Annual Vietnam Culture Camp ended on Sunday September 9, 2001 my eight-year-old daughters Rose and Sara protested in their own quiet way. "Why is it only a weekend?" they complained. The whole experience had made them feel so special that they wanted to hold onto it for awhile longer. On Sunday we were all inspired by the presence of Betty Tisdale, who talked to us about her work supporting Anh Lhac orphanage during the Vietnam War and her airlifting of the children to the U.S. in the chaotic days before the government of South Vietnam fell. While her example of courage and commitment was far beyond anything I could boast of in my life, she still made me feel part of a larger mission to help disadvantaged children around the globe. As I write this now, contemplating the possibility of many more innocent children being orphaned in faraway places such as Afghanistan, I can only hope for more Betty Tisdales to spring up and come to their rescue.
