The Good Name
Confucian scripts
are most important to lead a good life and achieve a good name. And so, there is a constant struggle by people to do right and follow the virtuos path in order to secure a good name, not only for onself, but also for one's family.
Old People and Saving Face
One should do everything to save the other losing face; losing face is one of the worst things that can happen to a Vietnamese. Society is not soft on someone who has lost face and their family will also feel the effect of that person's loss of face. "Beating around the proverbial bush" is a technique often used by the Vietnamese to save other people from losing face, and answering in the positive is also used to save face. he richness of Vietnam's origins is evident throughout its culture. Spiritual life in Vietnam is a grand panoply of belief systems, including Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Tam Giao (literally 'triple religion'), which is a blend of Taoism, popular Chinese beliefs, and ancient Vietnamese animism. The most important festival of the year is Tet, a week-long event in late January or early February that heralds the new lunar year and the advent of spring. Celebration consists of both raucous festivity (fireworks, drums, gongs) and quiet meditation. In addition to Tet, there are about twenty other traditional and religious festivals each year. As a language, Vietnamese is exceptionally flexible and lyrical, and poetry plays a strong role in both literature and the performing arts. Folk art, which flourished before French colonization, has experienced a resurgence in beautiful woodcuts, village painting, and block printing. Vietnamese lacquer art, another traditional medium, is commonly held to be the most original and sophisticated in the world. Music, dance, and puppetry, including the uniquely Vietnamese water puppetry, are also mainstays of the country's culture. Although rice is the foundation of the Vietnamese diet, the country's cuisine is anything but bland. Deeply influenced by the national cuisines of France, China, and Thailand, Vietnamese cooking is highly innovative and makes extensive use of fresh herbs, including lemon grass, basil, coriander, parsley, laksa leaf, lime, and chili. Soup is served at almost every meal, and snacks include spring rolls and rice pancakes. The national condiment is nuoc mam, a piquant fermented fish sauce served with every meal. Vietnam Culture The Exotic Sounds of Ca Tru Ca tru music sounds strange to the uninitiated. Clicks and clacks accompany the centuries old ballads. It is not the kind of music that inspires toe tapping or humming. Once almost extinct, a club in Hanoi is reviving this uniquely Vietnamese musical tradition and teaching new generations that to participate in a ca tru performance is to be transported to another age and once you start to recognize the art's fine subtleties it can be intoxicating. Originally, ca tru, also called hat a dao or hat noi (literally song of the women singers), was associated with a geisha type of entertainment. Attractive young singers entertained men in a relaxed environment, sometimes serving drinks and snacks. Men might have visited a hat a dao inn with friends to celebrate a successful business deal or the birth of a son. Ca tru flourished in the 15th century in northern Vietnam when it was popular with the royal palace and a favorite hobby of aristocrats and scholars. Later it was performed in communal houses, inns and private homes. These performances were mostly for men. When men entered a ca tru inn they

VIETNAM CULTURE OF A THOUSAND WORDS
    by Jenifer Chappell
Professor Kong Fah Lee, John Abbott College (Winter 2001)
Vietnamese culture is not a topic we know much about. The Vietnamese culture is very different because it is influenced by many other countries. The religion in Vietnam was influenced by China and Western beliefs. The philosophy of life for the Vietnamese people revolves around the belief of paying respect to their dead ancestors. Culture is also recognized by the historical facts of the country. Historically, Vietnam was dominated mostly by the Chinese, and later on, by the French, the Japanese and the United States of America. This international turmoil ended with the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement in 1973. Every country has its culture. A country's culture involves everything such as the religious beliefs and philosophy of life , just to name a few. Because Vietnam was a dominated country for a long time, it was influenced by countries such as China, America and France. These countries have a great importance to Vietnam's history. Culture is what makes a country a home to the thousands of people that inhabit the earth. Vietnam's people live in a country of many religious beliefs which consists of three major religious practices and three little known religions. Like many countries, Vietnam holds in great importance its religions and their teachings. Vietnamese people have based their lives on these doctrines and live up to them.
