Our unique culture and history reflect the West African, Danish, Spanish, Irish, Polish, and German heritage of those who have made the U.S. Virgin Islands their home since the late 1400s. The rhythms and lyrics of Virgin Island musicincluding calypso, cariso, soca, reggae, and steel pan melodiesare colorful reminders of our past. Virgin Islanders also express themselves in painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. The great Impressionist Camille Pissarro is just one of the Virgin Islands' distinguished artists.
Festivals
Island traditions come alive during celebrations throughout the year. The Three Kings' Day festival on St. Croix, St. John's Fourth of July celebration, and St. Thomas' annual Carnival are just three examples of the dozens of special events that take place each year. However, on any given day, visitors can catch a glimpse of the unique culture of the islands.
History
The history of the U.S. Virgin Islands is as rich as its people. Columbus discovered the United States Virgin Islands on his second voyage to the New World in 1493. In the centuries that followed, the islands were ruled by the English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Knights of Malta, and Danes. During World War One, the United States bought the islands from Denmark for $25,000,000 in gold.

AQUACULTURE PROGRAM
The Aquaculture Program at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix Campus is developing aquaculture production systems that are sustainable and appropriate for the Virgin Islands and other tropical islands. This summer we are conducting an AQUAPONICS AND TILAPIA AQUACULTURE SHORT COURSE. This class will be held June 22 - 28, 2003 and is open to the public. Please visit the web page for this class for additional information. Sustainable aquaculture in the Virgin Islands must be adapted to the islands' envirinmental conditions. Some of these include:
Advantages Limitations Large demand for fresh product Limited fresh water sources Climate for outdoor production Expensive land Imported feeds required High energy costs The Aquaculture Program has addressed these conditions through the development of 3 production systems.
  • Cage culture in fresh water ponds Tank culture Aquaponic systems
  • Please explore the links to each production system for construction details, photos, production data and pro forma financial statements.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS Geography These hilly islands were formed by volcanoes over a period of 25 million years. They are all peaks of submerged mountains, most of them extinct volcanoes, rising from a submarine plateau. The U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the Virgin Islands, a group of about 90 small islands and cays in the West Indies. Most of the U.S. Virgin Islands are uninhabited. All of them are considered part of the Leeward Islands and the Lesser Antilles. They cover an area of about 195sq miles and are administered as two groups, the British Virgin Islands and the Virgin Islands of the United States. St. Croix the largest of the islands is entirely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. The Atlantic Ocean is to the north of St. Thomas and St. John, and on the south they open into the Caribbean Sea. St. Croix, the largest of the islands is approximately 28 miles long and covers an area of 82 sq miles. It's about 40 miles south of St. Thomas and St. John. St. Thomas consists of a range of hills and has little level land. It covers an area of 32sq miles. Magens Bay in the center of the north coast has more than 3,500 ft of white sand beach and is one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean.

Recreation is any activity which affords opportunity for renewal of mind, body and spirit through pursuits which bring personal enjoyment – including participation in some forms of sport. Games and sport have been viewed as popular forms of recreation, but recreation need not imply sport – or any physical activity for that matter. However, sport is a universally accepted recreational opportunity for spectators (tourists and residents alike). This distinction is necessary as it helps to determine the future focus and mechanisms necessary for the development sport in the Territory.

The BVI has competed in such games as: the Central American and Caribbean Games, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games, Leeward Islands Cricket Matches, CARIFTA Games, Regional Volleyball and Basketball tournaments, and the Olympic Games, in Spain and Atlanta. We are reputed to have several athletes who rank in the top (20) twenty in the world as juniors. The BVI Amateur Athletic Committee and the Olympic Committee have both done well to promote track and field events in particular; the sport associations such as the Amateur Softball Association, the Bike Federation and Cricket Association are well established.

Virgin Islands "camping" at its best
    Maho Bay Camps
St. John, U S Virgin Islands
Although Maho Bay Camps is probably the most highly praised ecotourism destination in the world, we had modest beginnings. In 1976, we built 18 tent-cottages on 16 foot square platforms in the Virgin Islands National Park using hand construction methods which left the natural environment virtually undisturbed. The platforms were connected by elevated walkways to avoid soil erosion which endangers the beach and fragile coral. This sensitive land use stimulated an explosion of favorable press which has encouraged our growth to 114 units.
Now we are celebrating 25 years of an improved local environment as a result of this sensitive and sustainable development. We are encouraged by our growing popularity in a culture which is becoming more aware of the importance of preserving nature's precious gifts.
The roomy tent-cottages are nearly hidden by lush foliage providing privacy. Translucent fabric on wood frames, screened windows and open air terraces take advantage of the cooling Virgin Islands trade winds. Many units have beautiful hillside views of the turquoise Caribbean waters, near by islands and spectacular sunsets.

July 15, 2000 Listen with RealAudio Need audio help? Rudy: "Monday, July 24th is one of two days marking a, well, dangerous time in the Virgin Islands. It's the official start of the hurricane season. Now, meteorologists will tell you that hurricane season starts promptly on June 1st. So far this year, there hasn't been anything major, a few tropical depressions off the coast of Mexico. But it's still early. That's why July 24th is a big day in the Virgin Islands. Here to tell us more about it is our very own Michelle Kholos with this week's Culture Watch. Hi Michelle." Michelle: "Hi Rudy." Rudy: "So, hurricanes are a cultural event?" Michelle: "Well, if you lived in the Virgin Islands, or anywhere in the Caribbean, really, you'd think so. As you mentioned, hurricane season does officially start in June. But it doesn't really get going until later in the summer and fall. Which is why the fourth Monday of every July is an official holiday, Hurricane Supplication Day." Rudy: "Supplication Day, so it's a day of... prayer?"

British Virgin Islands Culture No trace remains of the islands' original Indian population; today's inhabitants are mostly descended from slaves or slave owners. The hybrid Caribbean culture is evident in the food, in the music and in the handmade sloops that many locals use for fishing. Islanders reflect a mixture of British and West Indian influences when playing their dashing style of cricket and when they wash down a plate of conch fritters with a pint of ale. Virgin Islanders are suckers for a beat. Fungi bands play scratch instruments such as gourds and washboards and sing songs that often comment on local social and political issues. Calypso, known originally as kaiso, was brought here by African slaves and used as a form of communication and rebellion. It's still an integral part of the islands' Carnival, which began as a celebration of slave emancipation. A lot of islanders of African descent retain a strong belief in the spirit world: ghosts (jumbis) often get blamed for bad things and credited for good things on the islands. Jumbi stories were an important part of slave culture, used not only as spine-tingling entertainment on moonlit nights, but also as cautionary tales for children. The inspirational antics of Bru Nansi, a wily spidery man who prevailed in adverse circumstances, were an integral part of West African slave culture. Storytelling traditions persist today, though often in more structured settings such as community halls and festival gatherings.
