Schools offer programs for learning disabled
BY SYLVIA COSTEN
TIMES-DISPATCH SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Oct 14, 2001
Each academic year brings more opportunities for earning a college degree to more and more students with learning disabilities. Legislation designed to open college doors to those with physical disabilities has benefited students with learning disabilities that vary from bipolar to attention deficit disorder to post traumatic stress syndromes. At Virginia Commonwealth University, some 600 students with disabilities are pursuing college degrees this year. "VCU typically identifies and serves more students with disabilities than any other four-year institution in the Commonwealth," Dr. Shyla M. Ipsen, coordinator of the VCU program, pointed out. Dr. Ipsen, who began developing the program in 1985, added: "We see students with learning disorders as individuals and focus on their strengths. By empowering them to go out into the world and support themselves, we are not just benefiting them we are benefiting society." The break between home and campus also is an important factor in overcoming "learned helplessness."

Identifying Students with Disabilities Tazewell County Public Schools ensures that all children with disabilities, aged two to 21, inclusive, residing in Tazewell County have a right to a free and appropriate public education. Disabled children are those children who manifest one or more of the following impairments, and who, because of those impairments, need special education. The State of Virginia uses the following definitions: 1. Autism means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3, that adversely affects a child's educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with autism are engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences. 2. Deaf blindness means concomitant hearing and visual impairments, the combination of which causes such severe communication and other developmental and educational problems that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for deaf or blind children.

Programs for Groups and Schools
Please see the Summer Education Programs for 2003
Student Education CBNERRVA staff provide in-school and field trip programs for a variety of groups including local school (4-12), college level and civic groups. Groups presently working on Chesapeake Bay or marine science curricula, lessons and issues in a broader context are be given priority in programs and field trip scheduling. In-school laboratory programs include fish and oyster dissection, marine invertebrate identification (mud crabs, isopods, amphipods, polychaetes etc.), plankton identification (phytoplankton and zooplankton), state of the bay slide show and others. Longer programs that address the collection, use and application of water quality, meteorological and biological data are also provided for suitable audiences. Field trip opportunities include guided canoe trips at York River State Park (see general public outreach below for more information on these trips) and field trips at the Goodwin Islands and the York River and its tidal tributaries. Programs are designed to enhance awareness and understanding of the estuary and emphasize the interrelationships of coastal habitats and human activities. Trip themes focus on eelgrass, oyster reefs, and other shallow water and marsh habitats. Animal collection, water quality work and scientific investigation are planned according to each group's field trip objectives. Teacher Training CBNERRVA, in conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the College of William and Mary School of Education, provides a one-week summer course for middle and high school teachers. Topics revolve around shad, oyster, eelgrass and salt marsh restoration on the York River. Teachers also are introduced to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Virginia WAVE curriculum. Activities for this middle school curriculum can be adapted for elementary or high school use.

http://www.heav.org/QandAConcerningSpecial NeedsOTPTandSpeechServices.htm
Questions and Answers Concerning Special Needs, OT, PT, and Speech Services How do I find an occupational therapist (OT), physical therapist (PT), or speech therapist in Virginia if my child needs one? Contact the Home Educators Association of Virginia (HEAV) and they can refer you to several clinicians who may be able to assist you. It would be wise to select a clinical consultant who is supportive of your home-schooling choice. Does my educational consultant or private therapist have to be currently licensed or certified? No, it is not necessary to have a current license. It is important to have a person who has experience working with children whose needs are similar to those of your child. Credentials in that area would be excellent. Can you comment on the use of occupational therapy evaluation and treatment for young school-age children? OT is very often prescribed for young children who have been diagnosed with or suspected of: delayed development fine motor functioning difficulty (needed for handwriting skills) having a learning disability a visual perceptual difficulty an auditory perceptual difficulty having gross motor development difficulty reading difficulty having difficulty in grasping early math concepts attention deficit disorder (with or without hyperactivity) being talented and gifted a physical or psycho-social disability such as cerebral palsy, blindness or autism

To Guide Entry
The primary objective of this unit is to sensitize both students and teachers to special education students and their needs and their rights. Many regular education students and teachers have had limited contact with special education students. They have very little understanding of the various handicaps of children with special needs. The information and activities in this unit will help Non-handicapped students get past their misconceptions and misunderstandings about children with handicaps. Teachers must help their students to understand and accept their peers with special needs. Teaching students about the various disabilities the other students have will foster an understanding of students with special needs. It is ignorance about disabilities and handicaps that breeds fear. Through education, non-handicapped students will learn to respect and understand the handicapped students as individuals. The second objective of this unit is to help the mainstreamed child with special needs to feel comfortable, accepted and confident in his or her classroom.
