Virginia has both rich agricultural history and widely diverse geographical regions (6 major soil associations, 6 distinct climatic zones, 5 general agricultural production areas) which are described below. The Virginia Geographic Information System provides detailed information on soil types, water, and other factors for 70 counties, and is continuing to gather information with the goal of mapping the entire state. This information is available to local government agencies and is used in planning and management of natural resources. Farm lands (approximately 8.7 million acres) support Virginia livestock and agricultural products. Forest lands (15.2 million acres) support important wood-based industries as well as hunting, fishing and other forest recreation. Wetlands comprise approximately 350 thousand acres and are impacted directly by agricultural and forest activities. Agricultural Production Regions

is one of the Southeastern United States, on the Atlantic coast. Its entire Western border is in the Appalachian mountians, which run from Southwest to Northeast. Approaching from the ocean, one would enter the great port city of Norfolk , first passing its even more populous suburb, Virginia Beach. Neighboring cities include Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth and Chesapeake . This area is generally called Hampton Roads. It is also known as the Tidewater, together with everything east of Washington and Richmond.
(Bear in mind that lawyers in Virginia typically practice in several counties and cities.)
Two hours West of Norfolk is Richmond , the capital. Two hours Northwest of Richmond is Charlottesville , just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains . Thomas Jefferson lived near there. Beyond these mountains lies the great Shennandoah Valley , and then the Allegheny mountains and desolateWest Virginia, a completely separate State which is not affiliated in any way with Virginia.

    The Capital Cities of Virginia
Richmond has not always been the capital of Virginia. Each shift of the capital occurred for a reason. Some of the buildings that housed the legislature, and places where they were located, are described by the official About Our Capitol site - but somehow the move of the capital to Wheeling and Alexandria has been omitted from the official site. NOTE: The "state capitol" is the building that houses the Virginia General Assembly. The "capital" is the city in which the General Assembly meets. At the Federal Level, Washington DC is the capital city and the US Congress meets in the Capitol building. Charlottesville, Staunton, and Lynchburg could claim to have been the capital of Virginia, since the General Assembly met there briefly.
    Werowocomoco
Virginia's first known capital was Werowocomoco, the "seat" of the Native American chief we know today as Powhatan. It was located on modern Purtan Bay, on the north bank of the York River in Gloucester County, 10 miles upstream from Yorktown. According to John Smith , Pocahontas came to his rescue there. Now the government of the Pamunkey tribe, including the

    http://www.vaes.vt.edu/about/history.html
The Virginia General Assembly established the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station (VAES) on March 1, 1886, in anticipation of the Federal Hatch Act of 1887. This Act created a nationwide network of state agricultural experiment stations. Every state in the nation has an experiment station as part of the land-grant higher education system. This system links experiment station research to cooperative extension pro-grams and college academic programs. The State Agricultural Experiment Stations (SAES) were charged with conducting research and development projects on behalf of farmers. Subsequent acts, including the Adams Act of 1906, the Purnell Act of 1925, and the Bankhead-Jones Act of 1935, increased federal appropriations to SAES. In 1946, the act authorizing the Regional Research Fund was signed. Today, 25 percent of the annual Hatch appropriation from Congress is earmarked as Multistate Research Funds. In 1962, the McIntire-Stennis Act was enacted to promote forestry research and graduate education. Animal Health and Disease research is a separate line item in the CSREES budget and must be approved by Congress each year. Return to the About VAES page

West Virginia is well drained; its important rivers include the Tug Fork, the Big Sandy River, the New River, the Kanawha, the Little Kanawha, the Cheat, and the Monongahela, all of which find their way to the Ohio. The New River and the Kanawha combine to form the most important waterway entirely within the state. West Virginia's climate is generally of the humid continental type, with hot summers (except in the highest areas) and cool to cold winters. West Virginia's natural beauty is spectacular, and the excellent hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing offered here form the basis of a growing tourist industry. The state has numerous state parks, public hunting areas, and state forests; Monongahela National Forest and a portion of George Washington National Forest (most of which is in Virginia) are in West Virginia. Mineral springs are scattered throughout the state, notably at the resorts of Berkeley Springs and White Sulphur Springs. Other tourist attractions include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (see National Parks and Monuments , table) and various mounds built by ancient peoples, most notably Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, one of the nation's largest.

Geography has much more to do with asking questions and solving problems than it does with rote memorization of isolated facts.
[It] is an integrative discipline that brings together the physical and human dimensions of the world in the study of people, places, and environments. Its subject matter is the Earth's surface and the processes that shape it, the relationships between people and environments, and the connections between people and places. " (From Geography for Life, National Geography Standards
    • Geography for Life: National Geography Standards were written with the collaboration of several professional organizations involved in geography education and published in 1994 by the National Geographic Society. A list of the 18 standards is available here The Five Themes of Geography : Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, and Regions have been the traditional way of organizing geographic content. The National Geographic Society suggests activities related to each theme. Virginia's History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOLs) present the knowledge and skills in geography that should be learned at various grade levels. Not all of these are explicitly identified as "geography" in the SOLs.
