Invented Cities The Creation of Landscape in Nineteenth- Century New York and Boston Mona Domosh Why do cities look the way they do? In this intriguing new book, Mona Domosh seeks to answer this question by comparing the strikingly different landscapes of two great American cities, Boston and New York. Although these two cities appeared to be quite similar through the eighteenth century, distinctive characteristics emerged as social and economic differences developed. Domosh explores the physical differences between Boston and New York, comparing building patterns and architectural styles to show how a society's vision creates its own distinctive urban form. Cities, Domosh contends, are visible representations of individual and group beliefs, values, tensions, and fears. Using an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses economics, politics, architecture, historical and cultural geography, and urban studies, Domosh shows how the middle and upper classes of Boston and New York, the "building elite," inscribed their visions of social order and social life on four landscape features during the latter half of the nineteenth century: New York's retail district and its commercial skyscrapers, and Boston's Back Bay and its Common and park system. New York's self-expression translated into unlimited commercial and residential expansion, conspicuous consumption, and architecture designed to display wealth and prestige openly. Boston, in contrast, focused more on culture. The urban gentry limited skyscraper construction, prevented commercial development of Boston Common, and maintained homes and parks near the business district. Many fascinating lithographs illustrate the two cities' contrasting visions.

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA Geography and regional characteristics
high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
    • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
    • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
    • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
    • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

    CHAPTER 5
    THE MANUFACTURING CORE
M anufacturing is an important economic activity in the United States. The evidence of this is everywherein articles of clothing, items of preserved food, residential structures, means of transport and communication, and many other things. In spite of the presence of items manufactured outside the country, domestic industry remains paramount, and it is rare for any medium-sized U.S. town to be without at least some local employment in manufacturing. The northeastern United States, excluding northern New England, is the country's single most significant region of manufacturing ( Map 4 : 45K). This region is loosely defined on three sides by the Ohio River Valley, Megalopolis, and the southern Great Lakes. The western margin of the region is less clear; it blends gradually with agriculture-dominant landscapes across southern Indiana, Illinois, and beyond. In spite of the region's moderate extent and the growth of manufacturing elsewhere, the Manufacturing Core continues to be of tremendous economic significance in American geography. Its factories produce most of the country's steel, as well as a significant percentage of its motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Most of the important ports, the main centers of communication, and the primary financial centers are within or near the region, and the country's political capital is on the immediate margins. The region includes the two largest clusters of coalescing metropolitan areas: Megalopolis, and the group of large urban regions between Milwaukee (Wisconsin) and Chicago (Illinois) on the west, and Cleveland (Ohio) and Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) on the east.

New Evidence on Race Discrimination under ‘Separate but Equal:’ A Note on ‘Teacher Salaries in Black and White’ New evidence on teacher salaries in Virginia in 1905 allow for more precise and consistent estimation of rates of return to certification and formal education than available in previous studies. Virginia ’s rendition of ‘separate but equal’ clearly delivered black teachers in rural counties a double-punch. Not only did black teachers in rural counties earn lower wages on average, but the premium paid for certification and formal education was half as large for blacks as for whites.

Education Reforms Have Led to Impressive Gains
compulsory education is key to eradication of illiteracy
China has a long history of formal education, but until the advent of the 20th century, few people could afford it. Prior to 1949, it's claimed that 80% of all Chinese were illiterate. The People's Government mandated compulsory education to remedy this, and today, most children attend free, compulsory schools for 9 years. 99% of all Chinese children attend Primary schools, with at least 87% attending Middle Schools.
There are more than 1,000 universities and colleges in China, with a student population of 3 million.
