Hollins University's New Wyndham Robertson Library
By Marna Hostetler Hollins University's new Wyndham Robertson Library opened to the public March 30, 1999 and was formally dedicated two weeks later as part of an entire weekend honoring the school's literary tradition. After a five-year fundraising effort and three years of construction, the Hollins community welcomed the new building with enthusiasm. Funding Beginning with the 1995 announcement of plans to build a new library, the building was the cornerstone of the Capital Campaign for Hollins. The Campaign eventually raised over $47 million, with $14 million earmarked for the library. The library is named for Wyndham Robertson, current chair of the Hollins University Board of Trustees and member of the class of 1958. Ms. Robertson's brother Julian Robertson and his wife Josie made a $3 million gift to name the building in Wyndham's honor. Other named areas in the building include: the third floor, named in honor of former Hollins Board of Trustees Chair Jane Bassett Spilman, class of 1953; The Hollins Room, given to honor former Dean Mary Phelgar Smith; the first floor, named in memory of Pela Plummer Hundley and Thomas Johnston Hundley; the children's literature wing, named in memory of Elizabeth Moss Hall, class of 1902; the Reference Wing, named in memory of Harry S. Frazier, Jr.; the Friendship Colonnade, named in memory of Mina Hohenberg Darden, class of 1959; and the Lewis Reading Room, named in memory of Frances McNulty Lewis, class of 1928.

Handley Regional Library of Winchester Upgrades from Dynix INWOOD, WV, August 14, 2001 - TLC's automated system - the acclaimed Library .Solution - has become the software of choice for all types of libraries throughout Virginia. Libraries in the state that have chosen Library.Solution total 31 systems representing 137 sites, with over 1,549 workstations. The most recent Virginia installation is Handley Regional Library in Winchester. Handley upgraded its main library and two branches from the Dynix system to Library.Solution in May. "With the $4.6 million renovation (of the main library) and the addition of the Bowman Library, we essentially doubled the number of ports that we would be adding to our system," Library Director Trish Ridgeway said. "Our old system could not handle it, so we went out for bids. We also reconfigured our entire network so we could have more flexibility and versatility," Ms. Ridgeway said. "To meet the growing needs of Handley and completely modernize, we migrated to Library.Solution." Among the advantages of Library.Solution, Ms. Ridgeway counted its easy-to-use Windows features, low annual maintenance cost in comparison to their former system's annual maintenance cost, and the "service attitude of TLC staff." "When we were in the final decision stage, our staff talked to all of the vendors who were on the short list. It was clear that we would be getting personal attention from TLC when there was a need or problem," she said.

CROSS POSTED TO AUTOCAT, EXLIBRIS, EMEDIA The Libraries of the University of Virginia celebrate the acquisition of their four-millionth volume, "Lady Freedom Among Us," a poem by Rita Dove, United States Poet Laureate and Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia. The volume was designed and published by Claire Van Vliet at the Janus Press. To mark the changing nature of our collections and to share with you our pleasure in this work of art, the Libraries are also making "Lady Freedom Among Us" available on the World Wide Web. This version was adapted by Rick Provine and David Seaman of the University Library. It includes images from the book and a sound recording of the poet and is tagged in Standard Generalized Markup Language, which is then converted to html using a filter developed at the University Library. The Library's home page is http://www.lib.virginia.edu/
