We Appreciate our Volunteers! The American Red Cross is always in need of volunteers...because someone is always in need of the American Red Cross.
Every day, the American Red Cross responds to emergencies down the street... across the country...around the globe. It may be half a million devastated disaster victims or one child in need of lifesaving skills. Few Americans are untouched by Red Cross services - all made possible by volunteers who discover that helping others also makes them feel good about themselves. Those who wear the Red Cross emblem - beloved symbol of hope and help - come from all walks of life. They are all ages. Everyone has something special to offer...including you! Make red your color. Wear it for the Red Cross - VOLUNTEER TODAY! (Read " Why I Volunteer ," by Crystal Mitchell.)

Emergency Services volunteers:
Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) Caseworker
AFES Caseworkers handle the emergency communications between the serviceperson's family and their military command during the times the Chapter is closed. Caseworkers receive detailed training and on-going support from the Emergency Services staff. Community Disaster Education (CDE)
Community Disaster Education is a primary emphasis of our chapter's Emergency Services activities. CDE volunteers staff displays, distribute emergency preparedness literature throughout the community, develop and implement disaster preparedness projects, speak to community and civic organizations and participate in other ways to help our community learn to prepare itself for disasters. This preparation is a very important part of relieving the suffering that an unprepared community will experience in a disaster.

The Museum of Flight has one of the largest volunteer programs of any museum in the region. There are over 500 active volunteers on site throughout the year. Our Docent force of 190 volunteers is the backbone of the program. Docents staff the Museum seven days a week, eight hours per day. In addition to our Docents, the Museum has an active aircraft Restoration Center with over 250 regular volunteers. Volunteers also comprise our Board of Trustees and various working committees. Rounding out the program are volunteers utilized in exhibits, administration, special events, speaker's bureau, and youth programs. The Museum also has an active internship program with many colleges in the area. Here are a few of our volunteer opportunities:
Air Force One hosts are needed for the first presidential jet. As a host you will guide visitors on this historical plane. (Click here for more information on this historic aircraft. Use your browser's "Back" button to return to this page). It’s a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world and to support one of the Museum’s most popular artifacts. Volunteer hosts will provide information about the plane and monitor traffic flow through the aircraft, working either from 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. or from 2:00 to 5:15 p.m. on any day of the week. Must be able to handle stairs and a variety of weather. Training takes less than one hour. For details, please call Jennifer Hawkins at 206-764-5720, ext. 613.

Spend Time With Your Family While Helping Others
Volunteerism: A Winning Combination

Does your family's quality time together consist of gulped down sandwiches in the car on the way to softball practice, soccer or piano lessons? Do you wish you had more time together - but the thought of even one more activity sends shivers down your spine? These days our lives are rushed and overscheduled. While pursuing all of our interests, we forget the importance of carving out time to spend doing something together as a family and of helping others. Family Serve: Volunteer Opportunities for Families , published by AAL QualityLife Resources, helps families find solutions to this dilemma by volunteering as a family in one's community. Through volunteering together, families can share a sense of purpose, build self-confidence and learn new skills. Parents can teach their children what it means to be a contributing member of a community and help them to develop compassion. Volunteering gives families a chance to be together, work side-by-side, and discuss issues facing the world today. Family Serve guides families through the process of choosing a project they will all enjoy, detailing dozens of resources for volunteer opportunities. A family discussion focused on questions such as the following will help to zero in on the right project:

http://www.frontiercollege.ca/english/volopp/volopp.htm
Volunteering with Frontier College Frontier College is a national volunteer-based organization. This means that we rely upon volunteers from communities in all parts of the country to deliver our programs. Each program area recruits, trains and places volunteers at various times through the year, depending on need. Our dedicated and trained volunteers work with adolescent and adult literacy learners, including prison inmates, people with physical disabilities, and others marginalized by society, to improve their reading and writing skills. Volunteers also help recent immigrants to Canada improve their English, encourage young children and their families to read together, and work side-by-side with migrant farm workers during the day and tutor them in English and literacy at night. In addition, Frontier College works with a large number of partner agencies for which we provide training and resource support. Am I Qualified to be a Literacy Tutor? You do not need to be a teacher or have a teaching background to be a Frontier College tutor. We believe everyone has the capacity to help another person improve their literacy or English language skills. Frontier College will provide you with comprehensive training and follow-up support.

They believe the people of each culture know and understand what is appropriate for their community. Their philosophy focuses on empowerment, not pity or charity. It is the Global Volunteer Network's aim that volunteers work to empower people with the skills and knowledge they need to become self-sufficient. Many old volunteers say that working side by side with the local people has been a life-changing experience.
Teach English in China! The Global Volunteer Network currently has teaching English opportunities available through their partner organization in China. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of China and while doing so gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture, that will stay with you the rest of your life. This program is located in Shandong Province and you can teach the English language at a primary, secondary and university level in either a rural or urban school.
