Watchable Wildlife Birds of Prey
By Bob Garrison
Outdoor California - September/October, 1994 Return Nothing captures the essence of wild California better than the sight of a bird of prey soaring over sun-bleached hills and valleys. Their majestic stature, large size and sheer numbers make them an ideal focus of your fall wildlife viewing. Thirty-four species of hawks, owls, eagles, falcons and vultures can be found throughout the state. As winter approaches, many birds of prey, also known as raptors, migrate into the state from colder areas to the north. Certain areas, such as Hawk Hill in Marin County, provide spectacular views of hundreds of raptors soaring past on their travels south. The search for food drives most raptors to warmer climates where rodents, rabbits, birds, reptiles and insects remain plentiful. Viewing birds of prey can be as simple as watching roadside fence posts and power poles for red-tailed hawks and kestrels. With a bit more effort and a little studying, you can easily spot five to 10 species of raptors on a day's excursion. The first step is investing in a bird field guide and reading about the habits of each bird of prey found in the area you plan to visit. The next step is to search out the natural habitats where the birds reside. Start by visiting a few of the watchable wildlife locations listed below for guaranteed success. Once you arrive, your bird guide is a must for identifying one species from the next. With a little practice, you will be able to identify a raptor simply by its shape, location, and behaviors.

The National Birds of Pre y Centre from the air - 2002 Important Notice For anyone who is considering visiting the Centre – this is your last year (2003) to do so in its present location. The bulk of the National Birds of Prey Centre is relocating to the US at the end of this year. We have been offered the chance of joining with another group and extending the work that we have done here for the last 36 years. This opportunity is too good to lose. However – we shall be open as usual for this coming season – seven days a week until October 31 st It is planned that a smaller part of the National Birds of Prey Centre will remain and continue on with the courses, the experience days, the owl evenings and the work of the National Birds of Prey Trust. For further information see the pages on the move, which will be written and updated over the coming months. So one and all, this really is an opportunity not to be missed. This is your last chance to see this collection of birds in the setting of the Gloucestershire countryside that it has enjoyed for so long. Next year if you want to see this collection you will have to come to South Carolina which is a little further to go!

These are diurnal birds of prey, with hooked bills and powerful talons adapted to hunting. Identification is difficult: they're usually seen at a distance, with no reference for size, and often silhouetted by the sky. The vulture is a large, short-tailed bird of prey, with long, broad wings.
Gypaetus barbatus 102-114 cm The bearded vulture is distinguishable in flight by its wings, which are thinner and more pointed, and by its tail, which is long and narrow, and tapers to a point at the end. The bare, unfeathered neck is only visible on the perched bird, and does not detract from its majestic beauty while soaring. On June 2nd, 1995, two baby bearded vultures were released into freedom in the commune of Roubion , near the village of Vignols . The baby birds were carried up the mountain sides in wooden cases, each strapped to the back of a man. Their journey here, which began in Austria and the Haute-Savoie of France, was completely by car, because the lowered pressure of airplanes would irreversibly damage the baby birds' nervous system.

Yellow-headed Vulture Family Pandionidae Ospreys Osprey (Fish Hawk) Family Sagittariidae Secretary Birds Secretary Bird Order Falconiformes The order Falconiformes is a medium-sized order containing some of the most majestic birds(ie. bald eagle) and some of the most repulsive birds (ie. turkey vulture) in the entire class. Grouped together with owls (order Strigiformes), they are known as birds of prey, with owls being the nocturnal birds of prey and Falconiformes being the diurnal birds of prey. Order Falconiformes is composed strictly of carnivores, and as such their bodies are designed strictly for killing. They have powerful, curved talons with an opposable hind toe – ideal for snatching prey from the ground, water, or air. The beak is often curved and ideal for tearing flesh. The eyesight is keen, perhaps being the best in the animal kingdom. Most day raptors, as Falconiformes are sometimes called, locate their prey from the sky and dive down in amazing displays of ariel agility to capture it. However, the secretary bird is unique in that it hunts its prey, mainly snakes, on land, stalking them through the grasslands. Not all Falconiformes prey on live animals: vultures are the scavengers of the skies, feeding on the dead and diseased. As such, their bodies are designed for this type of lifestyle, with the head being bald so that entrails can slide off instead of getting caught in the feathers.

This is an adult Turkey Vulture. It has a featherless red head. The flight feathers are a silvery gray. Turkey Vultures have a naked head. This prevents any feathers on the head from getting fouled by the carrion that they eat. Head feathers are very difficult to clean. Turkey Vultures can be seen everywhere in the Point Reyes National Seashore and on Hawk Hill just about any time of year. Look for the large dark bird with the unsteady flight. Early in the morning they can be seen stretching their wings, gathering the morning sun. Turkey Vultures don't build a nest but lay their eggs on the ground or in a hollow stump. Turkey vultures are carrion eaters. Turkey Vultures unlike most other birds, have a highly developed sense of smell. They find their food with a keen sense of smell. The nostril of the Turkey Vulture is oval. If the right light and setting, you can see through the nostril. I suspect that this aids their sense of smell. The Latin name, Cathartes aura, means "Golden purifier". Turkey Vultures are immune to botulism and other organisms in carrion that would kill other animals. Turkey Vultures also destroy anthrax bacteria or hog cholera virus as it passes through their digestive tracts, thus helping to contain these diseases.

DEFINITION
The word raptor is derived from "rapere", a Latin word, which means to seize or capture. More specifically, a raptor is a bird of prey. A bird of prey is a carnivore (meat eater) that kills and eats mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rodents, and other birds. Many birds hunt, kill, and eat meat, but they may not be a raptor. There are three distinguishing traits that make raptors different from other birds:
  • hooked beaks with sharp edges feet with sharp, curved claws or talons keen eyesight
ORDERS AND GROUPS Raptors belong to two scientific orders, the Strigiformes and Falconiformes. The orders are divided into six groups with a total of about 446 species worldwide. They include:
  • secretary bird (1 specie in Africa) falcons (63 species) osprey (1 specie) hawks and eagles (226 species) vultures (7 species) owls (148 species)
HUNTERS BY DAY OR BY NIGHT
Raptors also fit into two basic groupings as hunters, they are either diurnal or nocturnal hunters.

Vultures are large black raptors with a long wingspan that are often seen soaring in groups in high wide circles, rocking and tilting in flight, usually gliding in a strong "V" shape. Vultures usually have bare, unfeathered heads, which helps reduce infection when feeding on rotten meat.
  • There are 3 species of vultures in North America , the turkey vulture, black vulture, and the California condor. The only one of these species to be found in our area is the turkey vulture
These raptors are known to gather by the hundreds or even thousands to roost together!
