Uncommon migrant and summer resident in more heavily vegetated areas; most abundant during migration. Few pairs breed on campus, though one or two pairs can usually be found near the Mausoleum in summer. A Thrushes Varied Thrush Fairly rare to uncommon resident from fall through spring. Occurs in a number of areas on campus, usually in more heavily vegetated areas than those used by the similar American Robin, although it is often found in flocks of robins. A few can be found near the Mausoleum in winter. A Waxwings Cedar Waxwing Fairly common to common migrant and winter resident in various habitats throughout campus, feeding on fruits and seeds of a number of tree and shrub species. Often occurs in flocks. Some birds linger into early June each year, but no evidence of nesting has been observed on campus or in the vicinity.

Griffon Vulture - wingspan 2.80m, weight 7.8 kg
Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture) - wingspan 2.70 m, weight 7 kg
Golden Eagle - wingspan 2.20m, weight 4 kg
How do we identify them?
All three have long, well-separated primaries (large terminal wing feathers). The Griffon vulture (photo right) has broad, bi-coloured wings, buff towards the front and black at the rear. The head is narrow and bald, and does not project far. The tail is short. The vultures are excellent gliders who often survey their territories in groups (10-15 individuals). If you see three or more identical individuals it is likely that you are in the presence of Griffon vultures. The Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus) has a yellow-orange body. The immature birds have black heads, the adults yellow. The wings are long, black and narrow. The tail is large and lozenge shaped. It is very rare to see more than three individuals together.
The Golden eagle . The adult colouration is black. They can sometimes be confused with buzzards. Besides being much larger, the head is more prominent and the tail longer. Immature eagles have white rondels of varying sizes on the underside of the wings and their tails are white with a dark border.

Maymont's Wildlife Exhibits are scattered throughout the 40-acre valley between the historical estate, Children's Farm and Nature Center. All exhibits feature native Virginia wildlife in their natural habitats, including black bears, bison, white-tailed and sika deer, elk, gray and red fox, bobcats, birds of prey and an aviary displaying an impressive array of birds, many representing Virginia's wetlands. Neither of the two black bears currently residing at Maymont could have survived in the wild. One was orphaned as a cub, and when proven methods for bonding it with a wild sow (female bear) failed, a home was found at Maymont. Maymont's exhibits include many other healthy, but non-releasable, wild animals. These animals are accepted only from licensed rehabilitators and agencies that expertly nurse orphaned or injured wildlife back to health. While most rehabilitated animals are released into the wild, some animals are deemed unable to survive without assistance and find refuge at Maymont, where they serve important roles as wildlife ambassadors in education programs and exhibits. Composite image of vultures in flight The turkey vulture is one of the largest birds of prey in the USA, with a wingspan up to 1.8 metres. It is common throughout North America, Central and South America. It frequents open country, waste tips and roadsides, where it forages for food, especially carrion. Often, these birds soar for extended times on thermal uplifts, using a minimum of energy. The wings are held at a slight V-angle, which readily distinguishes these vultures from other soaring birds. The wing feathers are dark grey, in contrast to the black wing linings. This feature distinguishes the turkey vulture from the black vulture, which occurs locally in the southwestern deserts of the USA but which is much more common in southeastern USA. In desert regions, turkey vultures often roost in large groups on suitable trees and partly spread their wings to warm them in the early morning sun before taking to the air. The three birds in the image above were the last three of about 50 that roosted overnight in this dead cottonwood tree, directly over the author's tent! [Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA]

Looking into the Hawk's Eye
Why a love of raptors?
These breathtaking creatures strike some with awe, and leave others cold. For me, there are several factors involved, including a love of all animals in general, a love of flight, and of dinosaurs, from which birds are likely directly descended . (There is a counterpoint to that theory here , and other links on the topic can be found here .) There is something truly magnificent and noble about most raptors; they have a very elegant bearing that makes it easy to ascribe all sorts of lofty traits to them, and working with raptors is a very exciting and rewarding experience. "Please take me to the links Some Background in General: The term "raptors," or "birds of prey," generally refers to owls and the group of birds known as falconiformes . This group is divided into five families representing some 298 species worldwide. From the earliest of human times, birds have played an important role in mythology. They were seen as messengers, omens, predictors of weather or harvests, and as symbols of authority. The use of birds for killing other birds and small animals, called falconry, was practiced in China as long ago as 2000 b.c.e., making falconry possibly the world's oldest sport. There is still a sizable contingent of people who fly raptors for sport, and several organizations centered exclusively around falconry. Most birds of prey have stiff feathers, particularly the primary (flight) feathers. A Bald Eagle taking to the air can make quite a lot of noise as the air rushes through its flight feathers. In a stoop, or dive, a Peregrine Falcon can be heard for some distance. Owls, on the other hand, have soft feathers and can fly almost silently. This is also aided by soft ridges on the edges of their feathers.

Birds of Prey
NOTE:
As with all migratory biords, all birds of prey are protected by law. It is illegal to possess any hawk or even hawk feathers with out the proper permits or licenses. It is illegal to shoot or otherwise cause harm to any raptor
Birds of prey (also known as Raptors ) are migratory birds. Different species survive in just about every habitat in the world. All Raptors are carnivores, or meat-eaters, with each species having its own dietary preferences.
Raptors are at the top of the food chain (as are humans) and consequently, are a good indicator of environmental health. Contaminated water, polluted air, and the destruction of natural habitat adversely affects the raptor and their food sources. Many species become threatened or endangered Birds of prey Eagles There are many species of eagles worldwide. Most commonly known in North America are the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle . These are large, soaring raptors with very long broad wings. It is easy to identify the adult Bald Eagle by its white head and tail; however, the Bald Eagle does not acquire its white head until it is 3-4 years old. The Golden Eagle is named for the golden-buff feathers on its crown and the nape of its neck. The adult bird is usually dark brown with white at the base of its tail.

Cathartes aura Classification and Range
Turkey vultures and other New World vultures belong to the family Cathartidae, in the order Ciconiiformes.* New World vultures make up the subfamily Cathartinae and are mostly large, long-winged, brownish-black birds with bare heads. Other members of this subfamily include the Andean condor, king vulture, black vulture and the highly endangered California condor. Turkey vultures range from southern Canada to South America.
If you like this animal and find it particularly fascinating you can adopt it! Habitat
Turkey vultures are commonly seen near farms, open areas and woodlands soaring on thermals. They nest in rocky, forested locations. Physical Characteristics
Life Span
Can attain an age of 20 years in captivity. Diet
In the wild: Unlike true birds of prey, vultures rarely catch live prey. Vultures seek out carrion (dead animals) and will eat most anything they come upon. Soaring high above ground, they use their acute vision to locate food. The turkey vulture has a more developed sense of smell than most birds, and can easily locate covered carcasses not visible from the air.

They have closely barred underparts, the head is slate grey in colour and the eye ring and feet are yellow. Females look the same as males except they are a bit larger. Visiting birds are whiter and lightly spotted. They can be found throughout South Africa on cliffs and mountains. They perch for long periods on a favourite ledge. This falcon hunts from a perch or in flight and is the fastest flying bird in a dive and can reach speeds of up to 380 km/h. It diet consists of mostly other birds. AFRICAN HAWK EAGLE (Hieraaetus fasciatus)
This eagles size is medium to large, the upperparts are blackish and below it is white but heavily streaked with black, except on the legs. It has large white windows in the primaries and the trailing edge of the under wing is broadly black. The under wing coverts are mostly black with a broad band of white spots. It can be found in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, northern Botswana, Namibia (except southern region) and north eastern South Africa. Its habitat includes woodland, often hilly areas but it avoids open savannah and forests. They are solitary most of the time but are in pairs occasionally. It will hunt from a perch. While in flight it is silent and it likes to fly very high. This bird’s diet mostly consists of small birds most of the time francolin and guineafowls, but will feed also on small mammals.

Led by their noses!
Nutan Shukla I N the avian world, very few creatures have the sense of smell and New World vultures are among those few proud possessors of this rare quality. The ability to smell offers them the opportunity to find food even in the dense forests of South America. Fresh corpses tend to go unnoticed for they have no strong smell, but a carcass a day old or more can be easily located. Asiatic vultures or the Old World vultures are devoid of the sense of smell, they are unable to find a carrion if it is covered even with a sheet of paper or cloth, while their American cousin, specially turkey vulture, solves this problem without any difficulty. They fly low to sniff out food or else perch on a tree nosing out the dead flesh with the help of their large nerve-rich nasal organs that heighten their sense of smell. Decaying flesh releases some gases, which rise up in the sky and guide these birds to the food source. They gather above up-currents of the chemical ethyl mercaptan coming out from hidden sites in canyons, and thus are able to find the hidden corpses. Their powerful sense of smell has also enabled them to exploit forest habitat where they cannot see through the canopy of trees. Many species of vultures keep a close watch over these birds and follow them to get their share of food.

The California Condor reproduces slowly. It usually only breeds every other year. Because of this, combined with loss of foraging habitat, illegal shootings, DDT and incidental poisonings, the California Condor nearly became extinct. In the mid to late 1980s, the remaining Condors were brought into captivity and placed in breeding programs at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and Los Angeles Zoo. This effort has saved the Condor from the brink of extinction. Recently, young captive hatched Condors have been released not only in southern California, but at the Grand Canyon as well. The California Condor's South American relative is the Andean Condor. Other related species that can be found around the world are: Turkey Vulture, Yellow-Headed Vulture, King Vulture and Black Vulture.

An introduction to Birds of Prey
Raptors are one of the most successful and widely distributed bird groups in the world. Raptors are found on every continent (except Antarctica) and in virtually every habitat type on the planet.
There are two main groups or orders: Falconiformes (diurnal or daytime raptors) and Strigiformes (owls). Their variety is stunning, with nearly 300 species of diurnal raptors and more than 200 species of owls. Before going into the various groups, what is a 'raptor'? What does it mean? The word raptor comes from a Latin word, rapere, meaning to seize and carry off or plunder. It is a general term used to cover all birds of prey. Given the highly predatory nature of many birds in this group, it is a very appropriate word to use. There are five main groups of Falconiformes:
1) New World Vultures
2) Falcons and relations
3) Hawks and relations
4) Secretary Birds
5) Ospreys These are very broad groupings. Strigiformes, the owls, are less complex. There are two main groups:
