... Global Nation NAIA on terror alert ahead
of Iraq war: general manager

Agence France-Presse
THE NINOY Aquino International Airport, the Philippines' main international gateway, is adopting anti-terrorist measures and emergency procedures ahead of an imminent war in Iraq, the terminal manager said Wednesday.
Car parks located close to the passenger terminal were declared off limits to deter any car bomb attacks while the authorities lifted a three-hour daily pre-dawn curfew to make its lone runway available 24 hours a day, general manager Edgardo Manda said.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday warned of terrorist attacks in the Philippines in the event of a war.
Two airports in the southern Philippines were bombed over the past month, leaving 22 people dead and more than 150 others injured.
Manda said Manila airport would also impose stricter restrictions on the entry of non-passengers into the terminal building to allow security personnel to secure the premises more effectively.
"We have to open the runway, during curfew hours, which is 1:00 to 4:00 AM, in case it is needed by the military or commercial aircraft," Manda told a news conference.

Published on Sunday, September 22, 2002 in the Telegraph/UK Gulf War General Says Iraq Invasion 'Totally Unjustified' by Sean Rayment The officer who commanded the British 7th Armored Brigade in the Gulf War has revealed that he is strongly opposed to a military invasion of Iraq. Maj Gen Patrick Cordingley, who commanded the brigade - the renowned Desert Rats - in 1991, believes that Iraq poses no imminent threat to Britain or its interests and that "the case for war has not yet been made by the politicians". Gen Cordingley told The Telegraph: "I'm absolutely opposed to a war. I feel very strongly that it is wrong. There is no justification for sending British troops to Iraq." He doubted that the dossier of evidence against the Iraqi regime - to be released by Tony Blair on Tuesday - would prove the case for war. "I don't think they have much, frankly," he said. It is understood that Gen Cordingley also has grave concerns about the number of casualties that could result from having to fight all the way to Baghdad. Based on his forecast from 1991 that military casualties in a full-scale conflict could amount to 15 per cent, a suggested British and American invasion force of 250,000 troops could suffer more than 37,000 casualties.

or Britain, the Crimean War was part of the basic Eastern Question that had been going on since the 1780s and the time of Pitt the Younger 's ministry . To maintain the integrity of the Turkish empire had become one of the principles of Britain's foreign policy. By the Convention of Balta Liman (1838) Britain had won widespread concessions from the Porte that included:
  • special rates on most of the raw materials sold to Britain a host of benefits, grants and acknowledgements that gave Britain a very privileged position in the Ottoman Empire
Consequently, Britain felt that it was essential to keep control over the Mediterranean sea routes and to preserve the Ottoman Empire as a barrier against Russian expansionist tendencies. These considerations led to hostility against Russia. Britain also had the idea, advocated by Richard Cobden , that free trade would lead to world peace. The repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 had begun to turn Britain into a free trade nation; by encouraging other nations to turn to free trade, Britain was attempting to increase her own wealth. It has also been said that the British thought that they had the 'secret of civilisation' and wanted to export her political system to the remainder of the world.

BRIGADIER GENERAL ALEXANDER HAYS

Alexander Hays at forty-four was a hot-headed, coarse-grained, hard-drinking Pennsylvanian who was most at home in a fight. He reviled "scientific leaders" and called strategy "a humbug. Next thing to cowardice." His appearance fitted his fiery personality: he was six feet tall and husky, with sandy red hair. As one of his soldiers admiringly described him, he was "a princely soldier; brave as a lion . . . one of those dashing, reckless, enthusiastic generals. . . . His old brigade, the Third of his division, idolized him, and we would have followed him to the death." Hays was never accused of bad judgment, but combat sent him into a showboating, extravagant boisterousness. Born north of Pittsburgh in Venango County, Hays was the son of a member of Congress and general in the Pennsylvania militia. Developing a military bent himself, Alexander left Allegheny College in his senior year to enter West Point, though he was no scholar, graduating 20th out of 25 in the Academy's class of 1844. Once out of school, he showed a restless soul. After two years of frontier duty, he returned to Pittsburgh to get married, then plunged back into service in the Mexican War. After the war, Hays resigned army service to enter the iron business. His iron business failed, so he went to California in the Gold Rush. In 1851, he returned to western Pennsylvania yet again, engaging in bridge-building for railroads and towns.

BRIGADIER GENERAL ALPHEUS STARKEY WILLIAMS

Alpheus Williams had been at his post longer than any high ranking officer in the Army of the Potomac. He had been given command of his division when the Army of the Potomac was first organized into corps on March 13, 1862. In the fifteen months between that date and Gettysburg, he had commanded his division, and frequently his corps, on battlefield after battlefield. Williams was born in the village of Deep River, Connecticut. His father died when he was eight, and his mother when he was seventeen, leaving him a patrimony of $75,000, which was quite a fortune in those days. He graduated from Yale in 1831, a law student, although his journal discloses that he did not take his legal studies too seriously. Indeed, for the few years after graduation, his main intent seemed to be spending his money; between 1832 and 1836, he did little but travel extensively in the U.S. and Europe. Finally, however, Williams undertook the serious task of earning a living and mastering his profession. Upon returning from Europe, he decided to settle in Detroit, a boomtown in 1836. He married the daughter of one of Detroit's leading citizens and eventually fathered five children, two of whom died young. By 1840 he had been elected Probate Judge of Wayne County. In 1842 he became president of the Bank of St. Clair. In 1843 he purchased the Detroit Advertiser , a daily paper, selling it in 1848. In 1849, after his wife died at the age of thirty, he began a four-year term as postmaster of Detroit. When he arrived in Detroit in 1836 he had been admitted to the Brady Guards, a militia company, and from that time forward he assumed an increasingly prominent role in the military activities of the city. He was appointed lieutenant of the Michigan regiment bound for the Mexican War in 1847, but it arrived too late to see action. He also held other public military posts, including the presidency of the state's military board, and was a major in the Detroit Light Guard.

The irrepressible conflict... secede where others have failed!
In June 1862, Robert E. Lee was given command of the Army of Northern Virginia and immediately took the offensive, and now you can too. In Sierra's Robert E. Lee: Civil War General , a new strategy title for Windows 3.1 and Windows95, you play the role of General Lee. You get to decide the military strategy and tactics as you lead the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia against the Union Army of the Potomac. Civil War General is a military simulation played on a hexagonal terrain map. You control units representing infantry, cavalry, artillery, and specialists (sharpshooters and scouts). True to history, your goals as Lee involve more than just capturing enemy positions. In a successful battle you also have to kill enemy leaders, cause enemy units to surrender or retreat, and to keep your army alive, healthy, and in high morale. Beware, this is not Civil War- Craft . It's not a real-time combat game. Nor is it arcade-like in any way. Instead this is a turn-based simulation much like the board games of Avalon Hill. So while it doesn't have fast action, it does have a great deal of game play depth, beautiful graphics, and an engaging Dixie soundtrack.

LAFAYETTE. Received April 26, 1916. The Revolutionary War
General relates how Washington helped him to a knowledge of
the Father's Love, and his resultant changed attitude towards
the Germans.
I am here, Lafayette I have been anxious for some time to write you again and let you know the results of your advice to me when last I wrote. After our last communication, I sought General Washington and told him of my conversation with you and asked him to explain what this Divine Love meant and how it could be obtained. He was so pleased at my inquiry that he actually took me in his arms and called me his boy as he had on earth and with his face beaming with love and happiness he told me what this Love meant and what it had done for him, and what happiness it had brought him and how he was now progressing towards the Celestial Heavens of light and truth. Well, I commenced to consider what he had told me and to have a longing in my soul for that Love and the happiness which he said it would bring me, and I commenced to pray for the Love and tried to have faith. Well, without taking up your time by rehearsing the steps of my progress, I am glad to tell you that I have this Love to some extent and that I am now an inhabitant of the third sphere and enjoying the associations of spirits who also have this Love and are striving to progress. My happiness is very different from what it was before this Love came to me and I realize that the soul and not the mind is the man, especially of God's redeemed children. I never thought that the soul was capable of such Love and happiness and of the knowledge that the Divine Love is the one absolutely necessary thing to bring spirits into unison with the Father.

forty years since his death, yet his memory stands tall in the land
and his name rings firm in the historical echo of his times. General Pershing is the First World War, and the proof of this lies in the fact that after over fifty years no other general's name comes readily to mind when that war is mentioned. Pershing was born into the opening fanfare of the golden age of
Grant, Lee, Sherman, and Jacksonfour names that will stand linked forever before the fact of the preserved Union. Pershing's earliest toddler memories were of Souther bushwhackers raiding his hometown and shooting up the village. He was five years old when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. He grew to manhood and as a junior officer served under Generals Nelson A. Miles, Adna R. Chaffee, John M. Schofield, and William R. Shafterfour men indelibly associated with the march of America across the shrinking plains, to Cuba and the Orient, while the 19th century wound its way out and the century of great wars came upon us. In the First World War, however, Pershing played his part

YES, WE'LL RALLY THE FLAG, BOYS, RALLY ROUND THE FLAG...
A Review of Robert E. Lee: Civil War General
by Rich Cunningham In the past 12 months, there seems to have been an explosion of software games on the market relating to the American Civil War. TalonSoft has released three games, each relating to specific battles in their Battleground series (Gettysburg, Shiloh, and Antietam). There have been games that emphasize the strategic as well as the tactical aspects of the war, such as "American Civil War: From Sumter to Appomattox". There have been others as well. What is interesting is that each of these games rehash the same material over and over, but each has provides a unique aspect or twist to the battles they recreate. It is the very aura that this period in our history has that makes it a fertile ground for this type of programming. The latest entry in this time period is from Sierra On-line, one of the premier game companies in the computer world, and is called "Robert E. Lee: Civil War General". This is a different style of game from the company that is best known for Leisure Suit Larry and the King's Quest series. But, in true Sierra style, they have created a very playable and educational product. This game is a war simulation that allows the player to assume the role of Robert E. Lee and attempt to lead the Confederate States of America to victory over Union forces. The same factors that influenced General Lee also effect the player. These include lack of supplies and men, a superior army as an opponent, and the ambiguity of a battlefield victory. The overall object is to cause the morale of the Union to sink so low that they will let the Confederates leave the Union.
