American History
Well what in the world is a history page doing on John's construction services web site? As if there isn't enough clutter around here as it is. Clutter or not, history is another of my off duty pursuits. American History is fascinating, particularly the history of the Founding Period and the events leading up to it. A great experiment in freedom was launched . . . at the right time, in the right place, and with the right people. To my knowledge, the feat has never been duplicated. Imitated perhaps, but not repeated to this day. As I sketched out this page, I thought of putting a forum on it, a place where amateur historians (and real historians, if they had a mind to) could get together to discuss the events and characters connected with the founding of our nation. But either there is not enough interest, or this page has not been found by enough people to make a forum worthwhile. The latter is hopefully the case, and perhaps in the future we can get a full-blown message board going here. When I was first exposed to the Internet it was through America Online. AOL had a Revolutionary War Forum that was pretty good, but as it went along it got a little rowdy (the Rev War was being fought all over again), and AOL dropped it. I began looking around for other sites.

Great Britain London Downing Street, Sept. 27 I have the honor to communicate to your Lordship, that on the night of the 24 th inst. After defeating the army of the United States that day, the troops under my command entered and took possession of the city of Washington. It was determined between Sir A. Cochrane and myself, to disembark the army at the village of Nenedict, on the right bank of the Patuxeut, with the intention of Co-operating with Rear-admiral Cockburn, in an attack upon a flotilla of the enemy?s gun boats, under of the command of Com. Barney. On the 20 th instant, the ar-my command its march, having landing the previous day without opposition: on the 21 st it reached Nottingham, and on the 22nd moved on to Upper Marlborough, a few miles distant from Pig Point on the Patuxent, where Admiral Cockburn fell in with and defeated the flotilla taking and destroying the whole. Having advanced to within 16 miles of Washington, and ascertaining the force of the enemy to be such as might authorize an attempt at carrying his capital, I determined to make it, and accordingly put the 1200 men appeared to oppose us but retired after firing a few shots. On the 24 th the troops resumed their march, and reached Bladensburg, a village situated on the left bank of the eastern branch of the Pofowmac, about five miles from Washington. On the opposite side of that river the enemy was strongly posted on very commanding heights formed in two lines, his advance occupying a fortified house, which, with artillery, covered the bridge over the eastern branch, across which the British troops had pass. A broad and straight road, leading from the bridge to Washington ran through the position, which was carefully defended by artillery and riflemen. The disposition for the attack being made, it was commenced with so much impetuosity by the list brigade, consisting at the 85

THE HISTORY OF CANADA The War of 1812 Meanwhile the British colonies far to the east found themselves involved with the United States in a new war that threatened to end their existence under the English flag. The declaration of war announced by the United States had several causes. Chief among these was Britain's insistence on its right to search American vessels for deserters from its own navy during the war against Napoleon. In addition, England had interfered with American trade with Europe. It was claimed too that the British in Canada had been inciting the Indians against the American settlements along the northwestern frontier. The early hopes of the United States to drive the British entirely from North America were dashed by a series of defeats at the hands of British regulars and Canadian militia forces. Fort Michilimackinac, at the entrance to Lake Michigan, was captured by the British soon after the outbreak of fighting and was not recaptured during the remainder of the war. An American attack across the Detroit border was not only forced back but, under the brilliant generalship of Gen. Isaac Brock, ably assisted by the Shawnee chieftain Tecumseh and his warriors, was turned into a disastrous defeat. The army defending Detroit was forced to surrender, and the fort itself fell into British hands. Later the same year, the United States launched an attack on the Niagara frontier. Brock was killed early during the fighting at Queenston Heights, but the invasion was repulsed.

BRIEF HISTORY OF TENNESSEE IN THE WAR OF 1812 Prepared by Tom Kanon, Tennessee State Library and Archives
At the onset of the war, the theater of operations was concentrated on the Canadian-American border. Tennessee, eager to get into the fray, offered its services to the government; but distance prevented the state from making any direct contribution. However, when President James Madison called on Tennessee to help defend the "Lower Country," Tennesseans volunteered en masse, earning the nickname "The Volunteer State." Tennessee Governor Willie Blount was asked to send 1,500 troops to the defense of New Orleans and/or Mobile. An expedition, under the command of Major General Andrew Jackson, was outfitted in December 1812.
Natchez Expedition
(December 1812 - April 1813) The Correspondence of Andrew Jackson - Volume I (Washington D.C., 1926). At the same time that West Tennesseans were marching to Natchez, the eastern section of the state made their own contribution with a similar campaign this one into Florida. [Note: what was considered West Tennessee in 1812 is now the region of the state called Middle Tennessee. What we now call West Tennessee was Indian land.]
East Florida Campaign
(December 1812 - March 1813) For years southerners looked at the commercial possibilities of Florida (then under the sovereignty of Spain) and the strategic ports located there. Weak Spanish control allowed the Americans to anticipate a day when the territory would come under the domain of the United States. In 1812 a movement begun by Georgia "patriots" to gain control of East Florida caught the attention of Colonel John Williams of Knoxville. Williams organized a regiment of East Tennesseans to join the Georgia troops in an undertaking that, on the surface, was designed to track down marauding Creek and Seminole Indians based in East Florida. Hostility toward the Florida Indians was due, in part, to the fact that they received and harbored large numbers of runaway slaves.

He did not get the news that we had declared war, until after the Canadians had got it, and had cut off most of the supplies of provisions and powder that he was expecting to receive. The forests back of Detroit were full of hostile savages; in front was the English general Brock, with a force of Canadians and Indians. Brock summoned Hull to surrender.
Without waiting to be attacked, without firing a single gun at the enemy, Hull hoisted a white tablecloth as a signal to Brock, gave up the fort, and with it Detroit and Michigan. For this act he was tried by a court of American army officers, convicted of cowardice, and sentenced to be shot; but President Madison pardoned him because of his services in the Revolution.
