Our Mission
We are dedicated to providing high-quality lactation management training programs and innovative educational materials. We offer training programs for those desiring to become a certified lactation consultant and continuing education for those who are certified.
Our History
Lactation Education Resources was formed as a continuation of a well-established program at Georgetown University Medical Center. In the winter of 1997, Georgetown University Medical Center dissolved the National Capital Lactation Center and the lactation management programs that had been developed there. This included the Lactation Consultant Training Program, Clinical Internship Program and advanced practice workshops as well as various educational materials. During her 15 year employment at Georgetown University Medical Center, Vergie Hughes RN MS IBCLC had developed the National Capital Lactation Center in 1986 and the Lactation Consultant Training Program in 1990. Under her direction, they both became well respected nationally and internationally.

This article discusses school reform from a cultural perspective. It speculates that a primary reason why Indian students continue to suffer higher dropout rates and lower achievement is because a "dissonance" exists between American Indian culture and the culture of our public schools system. It suggests that certain kinds of teaching methods and school reform strategies are more "culturally congruent" with traditional tribal teaching practices and therefore should be considered for adoption among public schools serving Indian student populations.

Print This Email to a Friend Resources Civil Rights in Brief Special Education In an effort to help the community understand current basic concerns about civil rights, we have published the following Civil Rights in Brief which summarize these issues and can help you learn what you can do to protect them. Discrimination in Special Education Background The IDEA: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees all students "free and appropriate" public education (FAPE). IDEA protects the rights of children with disabilities, including: mental retardation; speech or language impairments; serious emotional disturbance; autism; specific learning disabilities and other health impairments. National Trends Overrepresentation and Segregation: What Does the Law Say? Complaints About Racial and National Origin Discrimination in Special Education: Filing OCR Complaints: A complaint of discrimination can be filed by anyone, or any organization, believing that an education institution that receives federal financial assistance has discriminated against someone on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex , disability, or age. OCR has jurisdiction for Title VI, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. OCR complaints must be in writing, cannot be anonymous, and must request intervention. Generally, complaints must be filed within 180 days of the last act of alleged discrimination, although a waiver may be granted. OCR does not have jurisdiction for IDEA complaints.
