The Basics of Parent and Family Involvement
The most basic statement that can be made about parent and family involvement in education is that when it happens, everyone benefits. Research has conclusively shown us that parent involvement in education benefits students, parents, teachers and schools, whether the program is at the preschool, elementary or high school level.
Benefits of Parent Involvement for Students
The benefits of parent involvement for students are:
  • More positive attitudes toward school; Higher achievement in reading; Higher quality and more grade appropriate homework; Completion of more homework on weekends; and Observing more similarities between family and school. (Epstein, 1991)

Parent and Community Involvement Internet Resouces National Education goals for the year 2000 state that "every school will promote partnerships that will increase parental involvement and participation in promoting the social, emotional, and academic growth of children." These goals can be met through involvement on multiple levels and by multiple participants:
    • Schools can involve parents in the decision-making process educating and training them in curriculum, budget, reform and other issues; facilitating their participation in course selection and student placement; and providing parents with current information on school policies and student performance.
    • Teachers can help parents become more involved in the education of their children by integrating parent involvement activities into the curriculum and being sensitive to difficulties that may hinder their involvement.
    • Parents can construct a relationship with schools and teachers through a variety of strategies , such as personal communication with teachers (notes, phone calls, meetings), asking the teachers for regular feedback (positive as well as negative), volunteering to assist with school activities, and monitoring their child's homework.

Both of those concerns are legitimate, and both are closely related to alcohol and other drugs, whether used by the student or by their fellow students. So parents deserve to know what schools are doing to curb alcohol and other drug use, and college administrators must be prepared to answer tough questions about their alcohol and other drug prevention policies and programs. Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members
Foreign Service life is an education. Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members , first published in February 1996, is dedicated to assist Foreign Service family members in obtaining the best education possible to supplement their Foreign Service experience. While the emphasis is on schools and school-age children, this book looks at Foreign Service family members of all ages. There is information on the day care needs of Foreign Service babies and early childhood education for preschoolers. At the other end of the spectrum, it looks at adult education options for Foreign Service spouses and young adult family members who are not in college. It is organized in general chronological order with the information on related topics interspersed throughout age level material. This book is designed for those people who want information on a specific topic as well as for those people who want to use it as a planning tool to look at the total picture of education for Foreign Service families. Chapters are below.

Parents are a child's first and most influential teachers. No matter what the abilities of a child might be, the goals of parenting are essentially the same. Whatever distinct demands result from a child's gifted ability can readily be met by parents if they are familiar with the characteristics of gifted individuals, informed about the unique needs of the gifted child, and persistent in assuring that appropriate provisions are in place within the school system that will meet their child's special needs. How to help advance learning characteristics:
    • Be a strong facilitator for "finding out" Provide many complex and challenging experiences Nurture a love of books Read widely, critically, and creatively Encourage language/vocabulary development Promote critical thinking (ask why, what if...)
