    Washington: Geography
    The Cascades
Washington's boldest physiographic feature is the lofty Cascade Range, which runs north and south, rising to 14,410 ft (4,392 m) at Mt. Rainier, and divides the state into western and eastern sections of quite contrasting physical (and corresponding economic) characteristics. The Cascades block the eastward movement of warm ocean air from the Alaska Current, creating abundant rainfall to the west and semiarid conditions to the east. Thus, the coastal region is one of the wettest areas in the country, averaging in higher elevations as much as 150 in. (381 cm) of rainfall per year and containing some of the heaviest stands of timber in the world. In contrast, the dry eastern section is comparatively treeless (except in the Blue Mts. in the extreme southeast), with just enough rainfall for dry farming.
    Pacific Coast
Washington's Pacific coastline is indented by Puget Sound San Juan Boundary Dispute ) and Whidbey Island.

Harris Burdick's Top 5 Washington Geography Sites Site What it is and how to use it. Kid's Ferry Page Ferries are cool. Believe it or not, especially on the eastern side of Washington, students have even been on a ferry. The kids page (geared toward elementary ages) is excellent. Have students create reports on where ferries go in Washington and how they are run. Plenty of information is available at this site as well as games and more. The Lighthouses of WA CURRENTLY THIS IS UNAVAILABLE. WE'RE TRYING TO DETERMINE WHY. IT'S REALLY TOO BAD BECAUSE THIS IS A GREAT SITE! This is a fantastic site, full of gorgeous pictures and a wealth of historical information about lighthouses in Washington as well as Oregon and California. Have students list all the lighthouses in Washington state, then find and plot them on the map using a Washington state road map and the help of a Washington state gazetteer.

    What is Geography?
Geography, at the start of the new century, is a comparatively small but lively and challenging academic discipline providing a distinctive approach to many of today's societal problems and issues: economic and social inequality; cost and quality of health care delivery systems, urban and suburban growth; efficient transport systems, patterns of food supply and hunger, health and disease, education and child labor; environmental and pollution problems; economic impacts of natural catastrophies (floods, earthquakes), appropriate utilization of water and energy resources; local and locational repercussions of new communications technologies; the activities and behaviors of transnational corporations; and many more.
The Geography Department has over the years developed a strong emphasis on Economic and Business Geography. [See also:
