Ritzville, Washington: Our Geography Our Location Washington State has two distinct components: the coastal area between the Cascade Mountains and the Pacific Oceanoften referred to as "the rainyside"and the so-called " Inland Empire ," the dry area east of and in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains. The core urban area of the Inland Empire is the City of Spokane , the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis; Ritzville lies 60 miles southwest of Spokane, in Adams County , of which it is the County seat. This 3-D map of Washington State shows Ritzville as the white dot at very roughly 119 degrees longitude and 47 degrees latitude. How did volcanic activity affect the geography of Washington State? Jennifer Hi Jennifer, That's a pretty complicated question, but there are two main parts of Washington State that have been affected in recent geologic times by volcanism. One of them, of course, is the cascades volcanoes along the W part of the state. The other is the Columbia River basalts, which cover most of the south and southeast part of the state. These are an example of "flood basalts" and they are between 25 and 15 million years old. General retail, grocery, appare l Ocean Shores is a 6,000 acre peninsula approximately six miles in length, two miles wide at the southern end of the peninsula and approximately 1/2 mile wide at the northern entrance to Ocean Shores. The peninsula features 23 miles of interconnecting fresh water lakes and canals which are spring-fed. They spill into the marina at the southern end of the peninsula. All the waterways are navigable by boat and Duck Lake, the primary waterway, offers a variety of boating activities as well as excellent fishing. There are two public boat launches with public parking and restroom facilities. The city boasts 70 miles of waterfront properties: bayfront, oceanfront, lakeside and along the canal system. The peak elevation in Ocean Shores is approximately 14 feet above sea level. All beach areas are public and encompass more than 170 acres at high tide. Beaches can be easily accessed from nine public roadways. Ocean Shores has more than 120 miles of public roadways which meander throughout the peninsula.
