Lightspan Partners With HUD To Develop Education Technology Programs That Benefit Hispanic Families FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 15, 2000
Contact: Bob Scheid
bscheid@lightspan.com
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 15, 2000 — Lightspan, Inc. (NASDAQ:LSPN) announced today that it will be teaming up with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide education technology resources for more than 600 Neighborhood Network centers in public and assisted housing communities. President Clinton will announce the partnership today at the historic White House Strategy Session: Improving Hispanic Student Achievement. The Lightspan/HUD partnership will begin by establishing programs in HUD communities that serve a large number of Hispanic families. To ensure access to the best possible resources in the Neighborhood Network centers, Lightspan will provide interactive and online content including: math and reading activities aligned with state standards; an online English/Spanish Parent and Family Center to provide homework assistance; and a series of online research tools, including an interactive encyclopedia, dictionary and thesaurus. The initial programs will be established in Delaware, where Governor Thomas R. Carper provided leadership in facilitating this dynamic partnership on behalf of lower-income families. "Having spent the past 20 years working in educational technology, I have firsthand knowledge of the equity-in-education issue and how it affects Hispanic communities," said John T. Kernan, chairman and CEO of Lightspan. As a result of Lightspan's success in helping schools and families bridge the digital divide and improve language and academic skills, President Clinton sought out Kernan to participate in the White House Strategy Session.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • A master's degree in library science usually is required; special librarians often need an additional graduate or professional degree. Applicants for librarian jobs in large cities or suburban areas will face competition, while those willing to work in rural areas should have better job prospects.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The traditional concept of a library is being redefined from a place to access paper records or books, to one which also houses the most advanced mediums, including CD-ROM, the Internet, virtual libraries, and remote access to a wide range of resources. Consequently, librarians increasingly are combining traditional duties with tasks involving quickly changing technology. Librarians assist people in finding information and using it effectively for personal and professional purposes. Librarians must have knowledge of a wide variety of scholarly and public information sources, and follow trends related to publishing, computers, and the media to effectively oversee the selection and organization of library materials. They manage staff and develop and direct information programs and systems for the public to ensure information is organized to meet users' needs.

School Networking Resources Northwest Educational Technology Consortium The Northwest Educational Technology Consortium (NETC) is operated out of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) and is one of six federally funded Regional Technology in Education Consortia (R*TEC). The national program was established in the fall of 1995 to help states, local educational agencies, teachers, school library and media personnel, administrators, and other education entities successfully integrate technologies in K-12 classrooms, library media centers, and other educational settings, including adult literacy centers and teacher education programs. The members of the Northwest consortium include the six state education agencies of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming, the Educational Service District 101 (based in Spokane, Washington), and NWREL as the lead grantee. The activities of the consortium in each member state are tailored to the needs of each state and are coordinated to complement existing delivery mechanisms or programs. Member states have identified four priorities for NETC services and products: NETC uses technology whenever possible to disseminate information and to provide staff development or technical assistance, including:

School staff can help curb victimization of gay students, improve HIV prevention education
Media assistance: Jessica Roberts Source: Diane Elze's Web page Related: Center for Disease Control and Prevention Related: Adolescent AIDS Program Related: [St. Louis, Mo., October 2002] - Gay, lesbian and bisexual adolescents are still being victimized in schools despite the efforts of numerous advocacy and educational organizations, according to a study by a social work professor at Washington University in St. Louis. At the same time, adolescents and young adults, particularly young gay and bisexual males, continue to make up a large percentage of new HIV infections each year, says Diane E. Elze, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the university's George Warren Brown School of Social Work. Elze suggests that schools aquire educational resources for students, teachers and staff that promote acceptance of students' diversity. Such materials can include books that reflect the experience of gay and lesbian youth, such as Free Your Mind: The Book for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Youth And Their Allies
