VOCATIONAL SPORTS MEDICINE PROGRAMS IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON
The development of sports medicine/athletic training programs in the State of Washington began in 1991-1992 school year with the development of a programs at Auburn High School, Auburn, Washington and at Davis and Eisenhower High Schools in the Yakima School District, Yakima, Washington. This number has grown over 60 in 2001.
A few innovative school administrators saw the need (with some eye opening from high school athletic trainers) for formal programs to prepare students for the variety of professions related to sports medicine. Fortunately, Mr. Buck Evans, the State Director of Vocational Education looked at these proposals with a very open mind and realized there was an interest and a need. Without the efforts of Mr. Evans, these vocational sports medicine programs probably would not have gotten off the ground.
Many "traditional" vocational programs (agriculture, wood shop, mechanics, etc.) prepare students to work in the field immediately after high school. However, vocational directors in Washington felt that America's changing work force needs to possess a higher level of skills for the jobs of the future. Although many careers in sports medicine do require a bachelors degree or higher, it was felt that starting the preparation process in high school would give these students a tremendous head start.
The State of Washington has also started a "Tech-Prep" program where high school students can earn college credits for high school classes. Articulation agreements between vocational high school programs and colleges (mainly community colleges) are presently being worked out. Wenatchee High School in Wenatchee, Washington is the first vocational sports medicine program to have a Tech-Prep Articulation with a local community college, Wenatchee Valley College. Students completing a full year of the high school program with a B or better will earn 4 college credits (equivalent to Athletic Training I at the college level).

Founded in the basics, the Washington County Schools' curriculum starts with language arts, math, science, and social studies. The curriculum is carefully designed to incorporate and go beyond Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOLs). While the SOLs are intended to ensure that every student in Virginia learns essential skills and facts, Washington County Schools seek to produce graduates who will be successful and productive throughout their lives. The Department of Academic Operations is organized by grade levels. Its director is responsible for all schools, the curriculum, and the instructional programs in the school division. Assisting the Director of Academic Operations are three supervisors. There is one supervisor for each grade level organization: Elementary Education, Middle School Education, and Secondary Education. The supervisors are charged with the resposibility to be instructional leaders. Additionally, the supervisors support the instructional programs and assist the principals in the schools they serve. Also assisting the director and offering support to the supervisors and principals are four program area coordinators. Program areas include: Technology and Gifted Education; Reading, Federal Programs and Grants; Math Education and Testing; and Vocational and Alternative Education.

Education in Switzerland: A Brief History and Main Features A Brief History In Switzerland, as in other parts of Europe, the large abbeys were the centers of culture and education up until the late Middle Ages. As towns grew and became more important in the mid-15th century, schools primarily designed to meet the need for vocational training emerged. Craftsmen and their guilds began to take on apprentices to train in the manual trades. At this time, Switzerland’s oldest university, the University of Basel, was founded in 1460 on a grant from Pope Pius II. Through centuries, various important figures stand out in this educational and intellectual development. Humanistic ideals and the upheavals of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation gave rise to new ideas about popular education. Erasmus of Rotterdam lived and worked in Basel, and the reformers Huldrych Zwingli of Zurich and Jean Calvin of Geneva founded academic schools, both of which grew into universities. The Jesuits founded parochial highschools in cities like Lucerne, Fribourg, Brig, and Bellinzona. Swiss philosphers and educators also became influential during the Age of Enlightenment. Jean-Jacques Rousseau of Geneva pleaded for the natural development of the child. The Zurich philanthropist and philosopher Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi was a great innovator in schooling, stressing practical methods of education. In the 19 th and 20 th centuries, several Swiss names stand out in the area of education. Philipp Emanuel Fellenberg founded a school on the estate of Hofwil outside Berne where he taught academics along with manual and agricultural training. The German-born anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner founded his own schools, often known as the Waldorf Schools, which emphasized the innate creativity of children. Genevan psychologist Jean Piaget, who died in 1980, developed new cognitive approaches to educational theory and practice.
