General Water Safety Tips
  • Learn to swim. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim. Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone. The American Red Cross has swimming courses for people of any age and swimming ability. To enroll in a swim course, contact your local Red Cross chapter.
  • Swim in supervised areas only.
  • Obey all rules and posted signs.
  • Watch out for the "dangerous too's"too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much strenuous activity.
  • Don’t mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol impairs your judgement, balance, and coordination, affects your swimming and diving skills, and reduces your body's ability to stay warm.
  • Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts. Stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather.
  • Know how to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies.

Water Safety and Swimsafe
NSW is fortunate enough to have some of the most picturesque waterways in the world. Ensuring everyone enjoys them safely is one of our goals. The Department plays an important role in water safety education and awareness. We promote the importance of safety in and around the water for the whole community, in partnership with other key agencies.
Swimsafe Learn to Swim Program
Adults and children can learn to swim in a supportive and caring environment. Last year our Swimsafe programs provided over 30,000 people in metropolitan, rural and remote areas of NSW with basic swimming skills and improved their knowledge of water safety. In fact, over the last 27 years more than one and a half million people have learnt to swim with Swimsafe. Our program is one of the largest of its kind in the world! We have a strong reputation for achieving results, and we pride ourselves on value for money, friendly staff and, most importantly, your family's safety in and around the water.

Welcome to the Play it Safe by the Water Website
This site is part of the Victorian Government's new $2.2M Safer and Improved Aquatic Recreation Program 2001-2002, funded through the Community Support Fund . The program builds on the highly successful Victorian Water Safety Initiative 1998-2001 - Play it Safe by the Water. The program has the strong support of the Victorian Aquatic Industry and is driven by six key strategies.
Public Awareness - using the Play it Safe by the Water message and key messages for each water environment. This strategy also includes a Water Safety Week for the community to participate in a range of activities.
Education and Training developing water safety resources and providing training for teachers in schools and pools.
Toddler Initiative - communicating toddler water safety messages, developing databases and researching information relating to backyard swimming pools and spas.
Improved Water Safety Signage - developing relevant and consistent signage at beaches and inland waterways throughout Victoria.
Extension of the Lifesaving Season - trialing and extending lifesaving services so that Victorians can continue to enjoy our beaches within the safety of the red and yellow flags.

Minister's Message
The Victorian State Government is strongly committed to making our beaches safer and making the community more aware of dangerous water situations and the skills needed to survive in and around water.
The Victorian Government's new $2.2 million Safer and Improved Aquatic Recreation program builds on the highly-successful safety initiative Play it Safe by the Water
The program has been expanded to include new strategies covering improved water safety signage, the identification and development of 'family-friendly beaches', the extension of the lifesaving season and a toddler initiative.
Through an effective media campaign, backed by an extensive education program in schools and 'Water Safety Week', the program provides expert advice to Victorians to increase their awareness and understanding of water safety issues. At the same time the program encourages them to enjoy beaches, pools and inland waterways in the safest possible manner.
Victoria is famous for its diverse water playgrounds - from our surf beaches and scenic inland rivers and lakes to pools and aquatic centres. Every summer more than 90% of Victorians are estimated to use these resources.
I trust this site provides you with some simple but essential water safety tips so you can play it safe by the water.

Site Map MetLife Boat Safety Tips Safety Tips for Water-skiing Water-skiing is an exciting and challenging sport. However, like all "fast-action" sports that are fun, it does possess an element of risk. Many skiers and boaters are not aware of the potential hazards of water-skiing and as a result, are hurt or even killed pursuing this recreational sport. Attention to hazards in the area where you are skiing is especially critical due to the ever growing number of boats out on the water. The Ski Area
The size of the water area in which you intend to ski determines the number of boats and skiers that can operate within it at the same time. Each boat should be able to maintain a 200 foot wide "ski corridor" (100 feet on either side of the boat). The entire "skiing course" should be at least 2,000 - 3,000 feet long to avoid constant turning and risky maneuvering. A minimum depth of five to six feet of obstacle-free water is suggested for safe skiing to:
  • Keep the skis from dragging bottom during starts.

Boating fatalities in Idaho, 1975-2000
This quiet killer lurks in summer water, too What is hypothermia? Hypothermia is the lowering of the body core temperature as a result of exposure to a cold environment. It's not cold in the summer. What's the problem? In Idaho, water temperatures even in the summer can hover around 50 degrees. Your body needs to maintain a temperature of about 98.6 degrees. So, what happens?
  • Once you are immersed in cold water: Your core body temperature begins to decline You feel cold and start to shiver in order to re-warm yourself You lose manual dexterity and coordination You suffer mental impairment In time, you can die from cardiac arrest
  • These stages of hypothermia happen at different rates depending on your physical health, the temperature of the water and what you're wearing. Hypothermia can set in as quickly as ten minutes. In many cases, you may lose consciousness and drown before your temperature drops low enough to cause death. How can I prevent hypothermia?
