shock have been estimated to account for a third of cold water deaths, including ofrisk that cold waters bring to the unprepared in our sport(details below).
http://www.capital.net/com/nckayak/nck_safety_p4.htm
SHOCKING NEWS ABOUT COLD WATER PADDLING As the weather cools and we start dreaming of tropical vacations for this winter, there is still lots of great paddling up north. With summer crowds gone we have the opportunity to enjoy our time on the water in a more quiet and intimate manner. In addition to great delights, fall and winter paddling also provides greater dangers, particularly for those unprepared for up close and personal contact with chilling waters. Cold water and its effects are involved in virtually all kayaking and recreational boating deaths. For example, between 1985 and 1995, of the 182 deaths in the waters of the Pacific Northwest, only 2 occured above 70 o , with 133 involving water between 40 - 60 o . This article will review some information which helps explain what makes cold water exposure so potentially risky, review some strategies to minimize that risk, and raise a few hairs with some stories of tragic, and mostly preventable, cold water deaths. Some stories and some statistics
- an 18 year old canoeist capsized into 50 o lake water, and sank to the bottom before a rescuer towing the canoe could rescue him. He was wearing jeans, a shirt and no PFD.

GUEST BOOK
WHITE-WATER RAFTING, Sun Kosi River, Nepal.
Whilst traveling in Nepal, in 2001, Rhona and I managed to get ourselves on a white water rafting trip down the Sun Kosi River. The trip would last 10 days and cover a distance of around 270 kilometres. The Sun Kosi is the longest river in Nepal, and we would start our trip up in the mountains and finish down in the "Terai", the jungle. This trip would take us through rapids ranging all the way up to grade 5. The grades refer to the difficulty of that part of the river. This can be due to the speed of the river, obstacles, (rocks, waves), etc. Grade 5 is the hardest level that most white water rafting companies will take commercial customers on. On the first day, we were taken by bus to our camp for that night. This place was luxury compared to where we were going to be staying. There was a bar, pool table, toilets, etc. For the rest of the trip we would be sleeping on tarpaulin sheets under the rafts or canvas shelters and digging our toilets out of the sandy river banks.

GUEST BOOK

WHITE-WATER SLEDGING, Rotorua, New Zealand.
White water sledging is a littlie bit like bodyboarding, (also known as hydro speed or river boarding). But instead of having the wide open sea, you travel down rivers. I have been told that the origins of white water sledging came from the Alps. This is a sport that I had found on the internet and had planned to do at some time. Whilst traveling in New Zealand, (the mecca for extreme sports), I got my chance! I had found a book, "Extreme NZ" by Alison Dench, that detailed different extreme sports in New Zealand that are available to the public.. This book said that the guys at Kaitiaki Adventure did white water sledging. I phoned them up and told them about my lack of sight. This did not put them off, instead they took it as a challenge! Stevie and Mark came and picked us up from our campsite and drove us, in their bus, to their centre to get ready.

Splashing Sports Safety Tips
A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for.
-John A. Shedd Sometimes water related activities can be dangerous, but for the most part, following a few simple safety suggestions will help athletes avoid injury. Whether playing in the pool, revving up for a day of skiing, or donning a helmet in preparation for a wild white water trip, those embarking on an aquatic adventure should take a few logical precautions. Although these ideas are not a full collection of safety information from the Coast Guard, we suggest using these common sense tactics to help your family avoid injury.
1 - Always wear a lifejacket when in or around the water.
Even the strongest swimmers can get in bad situations. A young girl with several years of water ski training and lifeguarding nearly drown at a local wave pool due to her inabilty to fight the overpowering waves. She never imagined that something would overcome her ability to swim after she had recovered from numerous intense falls on water skis, but the pressure from the waves was so great that the girl had to be rescued by three life guards. She was throroughly embarrassed as sputtered her thanks to the rescuers.

Weather UK Weather ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Surf Safety by Simon Alexander Simon Alexander, surfing correspondent and broadcaster for BBC Plymouth, discovers how to stay safe in the surf. If in doubt... keep out! These are the words etched on the minds of those taught to surf by one of Britain's top coaches. It's a message that has undoubtedly helped save lives. Surfing's growing popularity as an extreme sport has lured thousands to take their first steps to master the waves. But, for many, what should be a fun experience can turn out to be a washout. Potential dangers lurk at every turn. especially for those venturing into the breakers for the first time. Rip currents, cold water and crowds can prove to be a lethal mix. Lifeguards have reported a huge surge in rescues involving people with surf and boogie boards already this year. But with a little bit of know-how and expert tuition, surfing can be one of the most remarkable experiences of your life. Martin Ward, a qualified British Surfing Association coach, lifeguard and competition surfer, has been teaching the basics of surfing and sea safety to rookie waveriders for over 15 years, both here in Britain and abroad. Based on Cornwall's north coast, Martin has learnt that a little common sense can be the difference between life and death.

Safety Tips For Waterskiing Water-skiing is an exciting and challenging sport. However, like all "fast-action" sports that are fun, it does possess an element of risk. Many skiers and boaters are not aware of the potential hazards of waterskiing and as a result, are hurt or even killed pursuing this recreational sport. Attention to hazards in the area where you are skiing is especially critical due to the ever growing number of boats out on the water. The Ski Area The size of the water area in which you intend to ski determines the number of boats and skiers that can operate within it at the same time. Each boat should be able to maintain a 200 foot wide "ski corridor" (100 feet on either side of the boat). The entire "ski course" should be at least 2,000-3,000 feet long to avoid constant turning and risky maneuvering. A minimum depth of five to six feet of obstacle-free water is f suggested for safe skiing to:
  • Keep the skis from dragging bottom during starts.
