"Balifiles" - Don't be shy to suggest extra text, links or other information. Surfing Bali is justifiably famous for its excellent surfing beaches. The reef-breaks at Uluwatu, Padang-Padang, Kuta, Nusa Dua and Sanur are some of the very best in the world, with long tube-rides breaking over pristine coral reefs. For the less experienced, there are many safe beach-breaks and intermediate breaks scattered all around the island. No matter what time of year you come, there is always good surf with offshore winds. Bali really is "a surfer's paradise". For full details on all 27 Bali surf-breaks, plus the many other breaks in all other Indonesian islands, check out the "Indo Surf & Lingo" web-site.

"Save a Childs Life / Vac-Alert Saves Lives"
The Vac-Alert Safety Valve is a vacuum monitoring valve that easily installs on the pump suction side of a swimming pool or spa during normal flow conditions. The valve ignores standard vacuum reading, but reacts in milliseconds if an entrapment is about to occur. When sensing a sudden increase in vacuum due to a possible entrapment, the valve pistons draw inward and lock thereby allowing atmospheric air into the suction side of the pump. Due to the valves reaction, the pump cavitates and the vacuum present on the main drain is disabled before an entrapment, injury or death is possible. The unit is easily installed in new or existing pools or spas, requires no maintenance and is fail safe.

In fact, everyone who is in a boat is a boater, whether the reason is to fish, hunt, or just drift around. Hunting and Fishing When operating around boaters who are fishing, take extra care to control your wake. People often stand up in their boat to cast or reel in a fish. Your wake could tip the boat and cause someone to fall overboard. Remember you are responsible for your wake.

Stay happy and healthy
How safe is triathlon? Consider that people in their sixties and beyond have trained for and competed in the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26-mile run that comprise Ironman races. Here are some safety tips to help you live long and prosper in the multi-sport world. (For more safety advice on swimming, cycling and running, visit our safety articles for each of these sports.) Swimming Self-seed: If you're not a strong swimmer, start toward the back to avoid getting kicked and elbowed by faster racers passing you. Also, before the start, move along the shore away from the most direct line to the first buoy. You'll avoid the crush and won't have to swim much farther. Get open: Most triathlon swims take place in open water, which is more demanding than pool swimming. Avoid race-day panic by swimming a few times in open water to get used to factors like cold temperatures, murky water, waves, currents, lack of lane lines to guide you, etc. Never train alone in open water. Suit up: Not an accomplished swimmer? Wear a wetsuit (unless the water's so warm you might overheat.) The increased buoyancy will make you more efficient and less likely to exhaust yourself. A suit can be a life-saver in cold water, too. (For extra warmth, wear a second cap under your race cap.)

Safety Safety issues for Windsurfing near Kitesurfers and for bystanders WINDSURFING NEAR KITESURFERS: The new millennium (are we tired of this word yet?) is upon us, and with it a new sport. As with anything new, some adjustments are necessary. Although most windsurfers may never try kitesurfing, all windsurfers need to be aware of kiters for their own safety. Here in the Gorge we recently had a meeting discussing the hazards of this new sport and came up with a few ideas. Although there is a host of safety issues directly related to users, there are also some safety issues for the bystanders. Whether you like or dislike the new sport, it is important that we each know a little bit about it to keep people from getting hurt. Here are a few guidelines (pardon the pun) to keep in mind. 1. DON'T TOUCH THE KITE LINES!

Boats Without Water:
Ice Surfing/Sailing in Montana
A History of "Hard Water" Sailing Places to Set Sail in Montana A History of "Hard Water" Sailing Ice boating, ice sailing, ice surfing, hard water sailing...different names for a sport that's essentially whisking across the ice in a boat on blades or runners. The sport's been around longer than you'd probably think: almost 300 years. Ice sailing began in Holland in the 18th century, an ingenious solution for transporting goods over frozen lakes quickly. By the mid-1800's, ice sailing's popularity spread to the United States, where it caught on as a hobby for wealthy sailors. By the 1930s, different boat designs were being tested. The boats started getting smaller and faster, using enclosed cockpits rather than a traditional platform. One of the first boats of this kind, dubbed the "Skeeter," is still popular today across the U.S. and Canada. The most popular model today, though, is the DNnamed for the Detroit News, which introduced it in the mid 1930's. Ice sailing is enjoyed around the world, but the most active areas include Montana (of course), the Great Lakes region, New England, Ontario, and on into Northern Europe and Russia. Obviously, to go sailing, you'll need an ice sailing boat. The boat goes by many different names and configurations based on its size (from one-person crafts to large "ice yachts"), wind rating and number of runners (usually one, two or three). Part of the thrill and exhiliration of ice sailing is the speedin fact, the world record for an ice sailing boat is 146 miles per hour, and speeds over 100 miles per hour are common! With that speed comes a responsibility to be safe. Follow these safety tips:
