Egypt is a land of contrasts. Just beyond the fertile Nile Valley is a burning desert. Towering above both can be found the mighty mountains of Sinai. The desert is parched, yet snow can be found on the mountains, and in between these extremes of heat and cold, the Nile Valley blooms and flourishes. Yet these three environments share one thing in common: an abundance of animal life. Snakes and scorpions call the desert areas home, while the weasel and the mongoose can be found darting under cars in the heart of the cities. The Sand Cat is another mammal that is well-adapted to living in the desert. It has thick mats of fur on the bottom of its paws to protect them from the scorching sands. Sightings of the Sand Cat are rare. There have been less than five different sightings in the 1990's. Like many smaller desert animals, it does not have to drink water; it gets all of its moisture from its prey, which includes small rodents and the occasional snake. One would think that being a wild cat, they would tend to be larger, but they're not much bigger than a domestic house cat. In fact, the Sand Cat is believed by many to be among the ancestors of the domestic cat. After all, Egypt is where the cat is first thought to have been domesticated. We'll meet more Egyptian cats later. And while we're on the subject of dangerous animals, here's another creature we'd all like to avoid: the scorpion. The tip of its tail delivers a powerful sting. The venom of most scorpions in Egypt is painful, but not deadly. However, the Palestinian Yellow Scorpion (thankfully rare) has a venom that is potentially lethal.

Wild Animals Are Best Left in the Wild
AUSTIN, Texas It's spring, and young, wild animals are venturing from their nests and hiding places under the watchful eyes of their parents. Young animals often stray and appear to be abandoned that's when humans need to resist the urge to help, wildlife experts say.
This is the time of year that young birds are out of their nests but cannot fly. If the bird's eyes are open, it has a coat of feathers and is hopping around, it is probably fine, according to staff at Texas Parks and Wildlife's wildlife information center. Grounded fledglings will usually be up and flying within a few days.
This year's unusually hot, dry weather affects juvenile and adult wild animals. Wild creatures are on the move, seeking food and water, exploring riparian (wet) areas along streams and rivers, and in some urban areas moving through and into backyards. Some species, such as snakes, are very active this time of year and are being seen more frequently, said John Herron, leader of TPW's wildlife diversity program.
"Many people discover apparently lost or abandoned wildlife young and take them in, thinking they are doing the right thing, and this sometimes does more harm than good," Herron said. "People should leave young animals alone unless they are obviously injured or orphaned. It is best to observe a wild creature from a distance for a while in order to make that determination."

The Nile River is possibly the most famous river in history. It was by its banks that one of the oldest civilizations in the world began. Not surprisingly, the Nile teems with life. Many different types of animals, birds, and fish all call the Nile River home. Hundreds of years ago, even hippos and lions could be found here in the Nile Valley. The crocodile's eyes and nostrils are on top of the head so it can see and breathe while the rest of it is underwater. As an added advantage, its ears and nostrils can close when it dives, and a nictitating membrane (a transparent eyelid) closes over the eye to keep water out. Nile Crocodiles range all over Africa, eating almost anything (including each other!), but rarely moving away from their chosen body of water. Hatchlings eat small fish and insects; adults will go after turtles, baboons, and even the gigantic wildebeest. They live in large "communities" of several dozen crocodiles, but even there they tend to leave each other alone except during a "feeding frenzy" when they will all unite to take down a much larger animal. These are all pictures taken along various parts of the Nile and the Nile Valley. Some of them are of the animals, while others are of the country around them. Isn't it beautiful? The Nile Valley is home to so many creatures we wouldn't be able to see them all, but here is a good collection for you to see.

http://www.family-friendly-fun.com/nature/wildlife/wildlife.htm
Starting a backyard wildlife habitat is not difficult and is very rewarding. It is a pleasure to see the beautiful birds, butterflies and other wild animals in your backyard. Also, as more land is consumed by industry, highways and other "development", our friends need to find new homes. You can help by creating a home in your own backyard. The essential ingredients for a backyard wildlife habitat are: food, water, shelter and places to raise young. Food: Shrubs and trees provide fruits and seeds throughout the year. Some good choices are sweetgum, blueberry, sumac, bayberry, holly, viburnum, cotoneaster, and crabapple. Perennials and annuals are planted to provide nectar for both butterflies and hummingbirds. Hummingbirds visit bee balm, pineapple sage, wild columbine, cardinal flower, and trumpet honeysuckle. Butterflies enjoy butterfly weed, butterfly bush, lantana, purpleconeflower, garden phlox, zinnias, and Mexican sunflower. Supplemental feeders provide nectar for hummingbirds in the summer months and provide a variety of seed (sunflower, niger, safflower, and millet) for birds throughout the year. Water: A pedestal-mounted bird bath provides water and cools the birds in the hot summer months. A small shallow water dish provides water for drinking and bathing. Placed on the ground, this simple bird bath also provides water for mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Small ponds, easily constructed in most home landscapes, provide an aquatic home for dragonflies, fish, newts, frogs, and other aquatic life. A thermostatically controlled bird bath heater provides water during subfreezing weather when the need for water is critical.

Other things that they study include the Nation's fresh water. This is the water that is found in streams, rivers, lakes, and even underground. Forest Service scientists also study the role of air quality in the health of forests and people, now and into the future. More about Research and Development

March's Diary

April is the last month of spring and signs of the approaching summer become more evident as we go through the month. The vast majority of days (93%) contain some sunshine compared to 83% of days in March. By the end of the month there are 15 hours of daylight and only 9 hours of darkness. However, the sea water surface temperature is still not warm enough for people to throng the beaches and cold snaps can still occur, with temperatures below freezing often being recorded during April.

While traveling broadens our horizons, it may also expose us to risks we wouldn't otherwise encounter. Many diseases that are no longer a threat in the United States, or have not yet reached our shores, are flourishing in other parts of the world. This is particularly true in areas where the standards for health care, sanitation, and sewage disposal are poor. With more and more people now traveling for both work and pleasure, our risk of exposure to many dangerous bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms grows.
Moreover, medical care in some areas, such as in rainforests, wilderness areas, and developing countries, may be far below standard. Becoming ill while traveling might be even more troubling, if adequate medical care is not available. It's easy to see why prevention is crucial. Taking steps to protect yourself against infection with a serious and potentially deadly disease, before you leave home and while you are traveling, will help ensure your good health as well as your family's.
Disease from food and water
Food and water harbor much of the infectious disease that spreads among travelers. Special precautions are extremely important, particularly when you are traveling to developing or remote areas.

Basically, you and your pets need to avoid contact with rodents and other wild animals because they can carry some very deadly diseases. For example:
  • Rodents can transmit hantavirus and plague. Ticks can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease. Mammals such as raccoons, skunks, and foxes can transmit rabies. In fact, bats cause most of the human rabies cases in this country.
When are most wild animals active?
Most wild animals come out at night and are afraid of people. So, if you see a wild animal during the day, you should avoid having contact with it and notify animal control authorities because it may have rabies. How can you discourage animals from nesting in your house?
  • Keep your home clean. At night when insects, rodents and other animals search for food, keep tight-fitting lids on food containers and on the garbage containers. Discard any excess food and take up pet water bowls when not in use.
