Athletic Hall of Excellence
Construction is underway for a new athletic facility that will be built between the Cadet Field House and the Cadet Gym. This yet-to-be-named structure will encompass 110,000 square feet at a cost of $18.9 million with a completion date scheduled for February 2002. This building will house administrative offices, a 5,000-square feet athletic excellence exhibit, weight training area, centralized sports medicine area, team meeting rooms, locker rooms and equipment storage. Phase two of this project is the renovation of the 51,000-square feet Field House at a cost of $11.3 million. This make over will allow for more showers, women's locker room space and office space to help correct gender inequity and space issues. You can track the progress of the construction on these pages.

Recruit Information By Edward H. Newland, Head Coach Thank you for your interest in UCI Men's Water Polo program. at UCI's Home Page ; and many helpful links are to your right. I believe academics are very important as polo players can't make money at this sport and must go out into the world and do their thing. I also believe that the discipline one gets from athletics will go a long way to help any young man succeed i n the competitive world he is going to have to live in. Effective use of time is the most important single thing that all of us have to learn if we are going to achieve in anything we aim at. I feel this can be learned but not taught; however by dealing with both athletics and academics one has a good chance to learn how to use time effectively. I love to work with overachievers because these individuals have come a long way in learning to use their time each day in a very efficient manner. Water Polo has been the most successful program at UCI since the University opened in 1965. I have coached Polo here since 1966 which is a long time. I normally work a 15 hour day.

First Little Fifty running race starts events for Little 500
The "Little 500 week" is kicking off a little earlier this year.
This weekend begins with the inaugural Little Fifty track race. The Little Fifty is a 12.5 mile relay race in which each team runs 50 laps around the outdoor track at the Haugh Varsity Track. Most teams will use a strategy of one or two lap exchanges.
Tickets for the event came with the purchase of a Little 500 ticket. During fall registration 6,000 tickets were sold, well over the 3,000 person capacity of the track and field complex.
Sunshine and beautiful skies welcomed riders participating in Team Pursuit, a competition between Little 500 teams in preparation for next week's big race. Today, as in earlier years, the club is committed to maintaining and furthering water polo interests in the Huddersfield and Kirklees areas and to support this it has the use of two 25 metre pools with full water polo facilities and equipment at each venue. The facilities available give plenty of scope for the full range of coaching, training and competitive activities necessary for a membership of varying ages and abilities. The Friday night session at the Huddersfield Sports Centre follows the club's swimming session for beginners and younger swimmers which runs from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The water polo session commences at 8.00pm with the 25m pool facility shared with younger players practice for mini-polo up to 9.00pm and general training for older players to 9.30 pm. The Tuesday night session is from 8.30pm to 10.00pm and is based at the McAlpine Stadium Pool which gives us an excellent full depth water polo facility.

SPORTS IMPROVEMENT FUNDS
Sports Improvement Funds play a key role in Stanford's athletic successes since the University gives the Athletic Department no funding to support intercollegiate athletics. Most of Stanford's teams do their own fundraising to augment the funds they receive from the Department. The money coaches raise through their improvement funds allows Stanford's teams to improve the experience for every student-athlete and to enhance their ability to compete at a national level. Sports Improvement Fund gifts allow teams to purchase improved training equipment, travel for games against nationally ranked competition, recruit more extensively and run a first-class operation. Without these gifts, it would be difficult for Stanford's teams to maintain their current levels of success. Please note: gifts to Sports Improvement Funds do not count toward Buck/Cardinal Club membership. For more information call (650) 723-4591. Competitive Intramural Sports Program
The Competitive Intramural Sports Program has always been characterized by good sportsmanship, fellowship, tough competition and teamwork. Of equal importance are the opportunities, which are offered for personal leadership development and for acquiring sports skills with carry-over values in the post student years. RMC has 10 Squadrons of approximately 90 students each, which compete in team sports against each other. It is a compulsory program for all non-varsity athletes and is conducted twice per week, normally Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Play takes place during October, November, January, February and March of each year.
