Athletic, Sport, Recreation Bibliography Project
A Welcome Message from the Site's compiler is available or you can go directly to the Database
A complete Summary of the database contents is also available. The Bibliography Project research team credits can be viewed as well. Welcome
from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler:
This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

Tug-of-war was on the Olympic programme in 1900, 1904, 1906 (Intercalated Games), 1908, 1912 and 1920. Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport. The Olympic champions were as follows: 1900: a combined Swedish/Danish team; 1904: an American club team representing the Milwaukee Athletic Club; 1906: Germany/Switzerland; 1908: a British team from the City of London Police Club; 1912: Sweden; and 1920: Great Britain.
Golf
Golf has been on the Olympic programme twice, in 1900 and 1904. There were two golf events in 1900 - one for gentlemen and one for ladies. Golf is one of the world's most popular sports, being played in well over 100 nations world-wide. Golf also has a long history, as it origins can be traced back several centuries, and it has had organised international competitions since the mid-19th century. In the last decade golf has made entreaties to be returned to the Olympic programme.
Rugby Rugby football is one of the earliest forms of football in which the ball is carried rather than kicked. It developed in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Originally, rugby league was considered the professional sport and rugby union the amateur one, but in 1995 the International Rugby Board made rugby union an open sport, allowing professional competition. Rugby union football was held at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing TONY BENSHOOF ~ USA and OLYMPIC AND LUGE TEAM MEMBER. Tony has been using PEAK NUTRITION Products for several years ! Tony is a GREAT ATHLETE and VERY COMMITTED to his sport. I had the opportunity to watch Tony's runs at this years Olympics in Salt Lake City. How exciting to see Tony compete! The following interview and any pictures of Tony are his property. To reprint or use any of the words or pics, you must obtain permission directly from TONY BENSHOOF. Thanks!!! Traci HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE LUGE ? I started through a program called the Verizon USA Luge Flyer Search – recruitment program that goes around the country to recruit kids around 13 to 14 years old. They see around 700 kids per year to try out on wheels and choose around of 100 kids to try out on the ice. I went and tried out 13 years ago to try something fun and got chosen. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF COMPETING IN THIS TYPE OF SPORT ? How close the races are. You can lose a race by 1000th of a second. The competition is so close between the top 10 athletes in the world and you never know what is going to happen. The speed is a major factor – going 90 miles per hour gives quite a rush. TONY'S TRAINING WHERE DID YOU TRAIN?

    University of Lausanne Lausanne Switzerland
The exchange program in Lausanne, Switzerland allows ISU students to study at either the Universit de Lausanne (UNIL) or the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL). Founded in 1537 as a school of theology, UNIL evolved into an academy and became a university in 1890. About 7,000 students are enrolled, of whom 1,000 are graduate students. There are 1,600 international students. EPFL's history goes back to 1853 with the founding of the Ecole Spciale de Lausanne, which later became the Ecole Polytechnique de l'Universit de Lausanne (EPUL). In 1969, EPUL became EPFL, a federal institution and one of only two Swiss institutes of tec hnology. Today, EPFL is home to 3,800 students, 138 professors, 1,400 research assistants, and 850 administrative and technical staff from about fifty countries. LAUSANNE: Lausanne, the lively capital of the canton of Vaud, is situated on the picturesque north shore of Lake Geneva. It ranks with Geneva as the focus of intellectual life in French-speaking Switzerland and is also a popular convention and conference hub and the venue of important trade fairs. At the crossroads of the main European thoroughfares, Lausanne, with 250,000 inhabitants, is the hub of a major rail and road network. Geneva-Cointrin intercontinental airport is within easy reach thanks to a regular service of direct trains (42 minutes). Italy is only 60 miles away, Paris is just under three and a half hours by high speed train (TGV), Basel and Zurich two hours by car. Switzerland is truly in the center of Europe, and Lausanne is well placed to take advantage of the many wonders of conti nental Europe.

News page Playing addition-subtraction game By Laura Weisskopf 9/24/2001
Star-Telegram Staff Writer They're at it again. Why is it a prerequisite for the people who run the Olympic games to engender controversy whenever they make any sort of decision to further the participation of women in the world's largest sporting event? Last week, the International Olympic Committee announced it would add women's wrestling to the events for the 2004 Athens Summer Games. To make room for the mats, evidently, the IOC said it must sacrifice men's events. Huh? The International Olympic Committee, under the leadership of new president Jacques Rogge, insists that it wants to limit the number of athletes and sports in the Games. The goal for Athens is a limit of 10,500 competitors, men and women. But the fact is the IOC changes its mind more than a 6-year-old at a candy store. In 1998, then-IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch announced that all new sports added to the Olympics must include women's events. In addition, the IOC started playing catch-up by adding women's weightlifting and women's water polo for the 2000 Sydney Games. That raised the proportion of female athletes to a record 38.3 percent, up from 34.1 percent at the 1996 Atlanta Games and from 21.6 percent at the 1980 Moscow Games. Now, the IOC wants to trim down the Games while making them more accommodating for female events. This is a difficult, if not impossible, proposition.

    BOLD HISTORY
The full name is Southeastern Wisconsin Lions BOLD Inc.
BOLD stands for "Blind Outdoor Leisure Development."
    Aspen
It all started when Frenchman Jean Eymere, a ski instructor in Aspen, Col. lost his sight through diabetes. A few years later, in 1969 he wanted to ski again. His friends and colleagues at the ski school assisted him and guided him safely down the mountain.
This experiment was so encouraging, that the Aspen Ski School invited a group of blind persons from the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs to share their new learned skills. The Aspen Lions Club sponsored this event and provided bright yellow Jackets with a Lions emblem and a big imprint: “Blind Skier”. Aspen BOLD was born.
The Newsmedia picked up on the story, famous Olympic skiers like Kikki Cutter, Jean Claude Killy ( a friend of the blind Jean Eymere ), Stein Eriksen, Judy Nagel, Spider Sabich and several others were on the Advisory Board, including our own Lion Dick Kapp from Port Washington and Sam Skobel from Chicago.
