The standards he uses to qualify "skiable sand" is strict: "the sand is fast enough to skate, even without poles, the surf is commonly large, and the beach terrain at the waterline is interesting with a gradual slope to the water," says Koch. "The glide in the best sand is like slow wet snow or skiing uphill. Of course, it's possible to force classic technique in slow sand."
