TheTennessee Overhill takes its name from the Cherokee towns that rested on the western slopes of the Appalachian Mountainsoverhill from the Lower Cherokee settlements.
Welcome to the Tennessee Overhill -
so named because it was home to the Cherokee Towns that rested on the western slopes of the Appalachian Mountains overhi11 from the Lower Cherokee settlements. The Tennessee Overhill is best known for its rivers-the Ocoee, Hiwassee, Tellico and Little Tennessee. These rivers, along with Lake Ocoee, Tellico Lake and other smaller lakes and streams, offer more than enough for a vacation of whitewater rafting, floating, canoeing, sailing, fishing and water skiing. Visitors can follow rivers and trails to explore the Cherokee National Forest by car, foot, horseback or boat. For those who love adventure, there is gliding, rappelling, caving, gold panning and hunting. And there's more. Outdoor recreation is just one offering of the Tennessee Overhill. Museums, historic sites and reenactments spin tales of Cherokee Indians, fur traders, settlers, loggers, miners, railroaders, textile workers, farmers and sharecroppers - the people who came together to sculpt the cultural legacy of the Tennessee Overhill. You won't find high rises or glass and steel buildings. Many of the points of interest lie along highways and backroads surrounded by streams, mountains, forests and small towns. Selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development as one of sixteen heritage tourism demonstration areas, the Tennessee Overhill is comprised of the Southeast Tennessee counties of McMinn, Monroe and Polk, as well as the southern portion of the Cherokee National Forest. The mission of this non-profit organization is to promote and preserve the historical and cultural character of the Overhill.

The Tao of Roller Skiing
From Other Guides Guide to Hawaii's Beaches Off-Road Inline Skating Roller-joring (skating with Dogs) Elsewhere on the Web SandSkiing.com by Elisabeth Osmeloski Bill Koch, the silver medalist at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games and father of the freestyle (skating) cross country ski technique, just can't stop reinventing the sport of XC skiing. When the Vermont born XC skier needed to train harder, he decided to try skiing on 'slow' sand in New England, Oregon, and New Zealand - but when he brought his skis to the beaches of Maui, he was hooked on skiing on the fast sand. No doubt people thought he was crazy, but for those of us ski junkies, sand skiing might be a great escape in the off-season. Besides the obvious rewards of a killer workout and an all-over tan, sand skiing presents a few challenges to those skiers who attempt it. Foremost, as Bill discovered, finding the right beaches and consistent "sand conditions" is key. The standards he uses to qualify "skiable sand" is strict: "the sand is fast enough to skate, even without poles, the surf is commonly large, and the beach terrain at the waterline is interesting with a gradual slope to the water," says Koch. "The glide in the best sand is like slow wet snow or skiing uphill. Of course, it's possible to force classic technique in slow sand."

IOC Says All New Sports Must Include Women

By Stephen Wilson
Associated Press
Monday, February 2, 1998; 6:33 a.m. EST
If any new sports are added to future Olympics, they must include women's events, IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said today. "The Olympic movement is determined to make its contribution so that the 21st century marks the beginning of a new era for women in world sport,'' Samaranch said in opening the International Olympic Committee session on the eve of the Nagano Games. On Sunday, the IOC approved women's modern pentathlon for the 2000 Sydney Games. Women's weightlifting and women's water polo already are planned for Sydney. "The IOC has decided that any new sport wishing to be included in the Olympic program must comprise women's events,'' Samaranch said in a speech. The IOC gave provisional recognition last week to the federations representing sumo wrestling and bodybuilding. Wrestling and boxing, two male-only sports already in the summer games, are pushing to include women's events. Sydney officials said the move boosts the total proportion of female athletes to 42 percent, an increase of 5 percent over the previous record at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Olympic Factsheets Since 1904 there have been a variety of demonstration sports held as part of the Games but not as official events eligible for medals. Some of the events have later become official sports, such as basketball, badminton, baseball and tennis. Originally, demonstration sports and events were included as an opportunity to showcase sports or events which were unique to the country hosting the Games. They have since evolved into a much more important aspect of the Olympic Games. Today, participation in the Olympics (Winter or Summer) as a demonstration sport or event often serves as a stepping stone in the application for consideration as a future Olympic sport. The sport must first be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the conditions that it has an International Federation (IF) and that this Federation has held a World Championship competition. The sport may then be included as a demonstration sport, and the sport's International Federation may make an application to the IOC for consideration as an Olympic Sport. This application process must take place a minimum of six years before a scheduled Olympic Games. The demonstration sports at Barcelona were Taekwondo (a form of Martial Arts), Roller Hockey and Basque pelota, a local ball game, having appeared in Paris in 1924 and Mexico in 1968. There are no proposed demonstration sports on the Atlanta programme. One new Olympic sport will be introduced in Atlanta - women's softball; and three new disciplines will be introduced - women's soccer, mountain bike racing and beach volleyball. Sports that have been demonstration sports in the past, include:

The Slovak Junior Olympic Team celebrating their Bronze medal victory in 1999 Slovakia has always been a country with a rich sports tradition. Among the winter sports, ice hockey and skiing are especially dominant here, but figure skating also has a great tradition. The natural conditions implore the inhabitants of this country to the cultivate winter sports. Football, volleyball, tennis and ice hockey are popular. There is a very good network of marked trails in all mountain areas, and it is possible to plan a walking tour in advance. Hunting is available. Highlights Since independence Slovakia has been represented as a unique nation in the Olympics and other international sports venues. Although Slovaks played a prominent role under the banner of "Czechoslovakia" they had to prove themselves all over again under their new nation state. Slovakia made its Olympic debut at the Winter Olympic games in Lillehammer 1994. Success has followed for this nation of 5 million people. At the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics Slovakia picked up 3 medals, including one gold. Nagano 1998 was shutout but victories in other international events followed. At the Hockey World Juniors in 1999 the Slovak team managed to get bronze. In 2000, at the Icehockey World Championships Slovakia clinched the silver medal after a defeat by their former partners, the Czech Republic.

It's been said that speed is something that cannot be taught it's a unique skill that enables ordinary individuals to accelerate towards extraordinary feats. Matt Biondi is recognized as one of the fastest human beings in the water and, with eleven Olympic medals, is tied with Mark Spitz as the most decorated U.S. Olympian in history. His competitive career, which spanned three Olympiads, redefined the limits of speed in the water. Having won his first Olympic gold medal at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, Matt set and reached ambitious goals in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. At the swimming venue, Matt's tasks were to defend his World Record in the 100-meter freestyle, challenge the world champions in three additional individual events and swim in three relay teams as well. When the swimming competition had ended, Matt had earned seven medals (more than any athlete in any sport), including five gold, and set four World Records. It was an incredible Olympiad for Biondi, but according to Thornton, not surprising, given his talents. "He has the ability to feel the water, much like an artist feels the canvas and a pianist feels the keys. Those are things you just don't teach people."

BID CITY PROFILE AND FACT SHEET
Vancouver, Canada
Bid: 2010 Winter Olympic Games
Population:
Location: Western Canadian Province of British Columbia, on the Pacific coast
Olympic History: Canada hosted Summer Games in Montreal, 1976 and the Winter Games in Calgary, 1988. This is Vancouver's first bid.
In 1960 the idea surfaced of hosting an Olympic Winter Games in the Garibaldi (now Whistler) region. In 1970 Garibaldi/Vancouver was Canada’s bid for the 1976 Olympic Winter Games. In 1974 Whistler was again considered as a candidate for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. In 1998 the COA selected Vancouver-Whistler over Calgary and Quebec City to be Canada’s candidate for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games. In 1999 the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Bid Corporation was formed. Vancouver’s bid budget is $34 million, organizers say the Games (including the Paralympic Games) would draw 6,000 athletes and officials, 10,000 media representatives and 35,000 overnight visitors to Vancouver and Whistler. The Bid Corporation is supported by more than 70 companies, corporations and organizations. Vancouver Bid Book Presentation Bid Status: Was selected to the candidate short-list on August 28, 2002. The bid has delivered its final bid book and awaits the IOC evaluation team visit.

Destiny or lucky circumstance, or perhaps a lot of both, contrived to boost alpine skiing from a pastime on a par with slogging about on skis and with sledding and skating into something deeper, a way of life and a treasure of recreation practiced so widely today and available somewhere in most of the snowy mountain ranges on earth.
In short, alpine skiing has reached a popularity and a global penetration far beyond the wildest dreams of its pioneers.
And actually, there are at least some solid explanations.
Pioneer alpine skiers in the 1920s were drawing on a trial-and-error process of millenniums, at least five thousand years, of winnowing out mistakes such as short broad skis and a single long pole while preserving advances such as long, narrow skis and two shorter poles.
