Hile-Nepfel, Mary
Hile-Nepfel, the first All-American in Lady Dons basketball history, is one of just seven players to have a number retired in the rafters of War Memorial Gym. Hile-Nepfel was also the first woman to be inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1985. USF Basketball Legend: Mary Hile-Nepfel has a passion for the USF women's basketball program and has proudly represented the university as both a player and a coach for a good portion of the last 24 years. Just six seasons after completing an All-American playing career with the Lady Dons in 1981, Hile-Nepfel returned to the Hilltop campus in 1987 along with her husband, Bill Nepfel, to become USF's co-head coaches. Their success as one of just a handful of husband-wife coaching tandems in the country was highlighted by three consecutive WCC Tournament Championships followed by three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. Hile-Nepfel, now in her 15th season, and second as sole head coach, faces the challenge of leading Lady Dons basketball into the future with the same characteristic enthusiasm and drive as she demonstrated during her playing days. Mary's intensity on the court and her strong will to win characterized her as a player and are the same traits she instills in her players today.

[Olympics Main] [Getting In Shape] [Safety Tips] ... [Ice Hockey] HISTORY Cross-country or nordic is the oldest form of skiing. There is evidence that primi- tive skis were used in Norway over 5,000 years ago. As early as the 10 th century, cross-country skiing was basic transportation. Vikings in Northern Europe got around on skis when traversing relatively flat landscapes. Ski competitions started in Norway in the 19 th century. Norway's famous Holmenkollen ski festival began in 1892. At first the main focus at nordic festivals was the combined event of cross-country skiing and ski jumping. In 1900, a separate cross-country race was held at the Holmenkollen. Cross-country competition was added to the Winter Olympics at Chamonix in 1924 and has been part of competition since that time. The events held at the first cross-country competition were the 15km and the 50km. A women's cross-country event, the 10km, was added to the program in 1952. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING AT THE OLYMPICS In competitions today, cross-country skiing is divided into two techniques — classical (diagonal stride) and freestyle, with separate events for men and women.

There is evidence that primitive skis were used in Norway over 5,000 years ago. As early as the 10 th century, Vikings in Northern Europe got around on skis when they hunted snow-covered hills. Skiing expanded throughout Scandinavia and Russia as a mode of winter transportation and eventually became a sport similar to cross-country skiing. The first alpine competition, a primitive downhill event, was held in the 1850s. The sport spread over the next few decades to other parts of Europe and the United States, where miners amused themselves with ski competitions during winter months. Modern alpine racing was invented by an Englishman, Sir Arnold Lunn, and an Austrian, Hannes Schneider. After traveling through the Alps for years, Lunn dreamed of racing through the majestic mountain range. He organized the first slalom in 1922, in Muerren, Switzerland, and later joined forces with Schneider to organize the first Olympic alpine event. The Arlberg-Kandahar, a combined slalom and downhill event was the first legitimate alpine race and led to inclusion of alpine skiing in the Olympic program. Alpine skiing became part of the Olympic program at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games. The first Alpine skiing program in the Olympics that year was a men's and women's combined event, featuring a

In 1953, after the 2nd Winter Games held in Oslo between the 10th and the 14th of February, the 7th International games took place at Brussels between the 15th and the 19th of August. Mr. Rubens-Alcais retired as the President following the 12th Congress held at Brussels in 1953 and was replaced by Mr. Oscar Ryden of Sweden. Mr. Rubens-Alcais passed away on the 8th of March, 1963 and was buried in the cemetry of Ivry, near Paris.
Mr. Ryden served for two years with zeal and intelligence before the position was passed on to Mr. J.P. Nielsen of Denmark at the 13th Congress in Oberammergau 1955. Australia and New Zealand were accepted as members of the same Congress, bringing the membership up to 23 nations.
On the 15th of June, 1955, the International Olympic Committee announced its unanimous recognition of the CISS as an "International Federation with Olympic standing." Following this recognition, the CISS agreed at the 14th Congress in Milan in 1957 to amend its statues in accordance with the Olympic spirit. This meant that the word "Olympic" and five ring emblems shall not be used by the CISS. At the same Congress, Argentina, German Democratic Republic, Chile, Greece, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Uruguay and the U.S.S.R., were welcomed as new members, bringing the total membership to 32 nations. Canada was accepted as a new member at the next Congress, the 15th at Montana-Vermala during the 4th Winter Games.
