Tug-of-war

Tug-of-war was on the Olympic programme in 1900, 1904, 1906 (Intercalated Games), 1908, 1912 and 1920. Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport. The Olympic champions were as follows: 1900: a combined Swedish/Danish team; 1904: an American club team representing the Milwaukee Athletic Club; 1906: Germany/Switzerland; 1908: a British team from the City of London Police Club; 1912: Sweden; and 1920: Great Britain.
Golf
Golf has been on the Olympic programme twice, in 1900 and 1904. There were two golf events in 1900 - one for gentlemen and one for ladies. Golf is one of the world's most popular sports, being played in well over 100 nations world-wide. Golf also has a long history, as it origins can be traced back several centuries, and it has had organised international competitions since the mid-19th century. In the last decade golf has made entreaties to be returned to the Olympic programme.
Rugby Rugby football is one of the earliest forms of football in which the ball is carried rather than kicked. It developed in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Originally, rugby league was considered the professional sport and rugby union the amateur one, but in 1995 the International Rugby Board made rugby union an open sport, allowing professional competition. Rugby union football was held at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.

Twelve U.S. athletes will vie for titles in Open divisions beginning Friday
POLK CITY, Fla., March 7, 2003 U.S. Junior water ski athlete Joy Todd (Pierson, Fla.) won titles Thursday in Girls' jumping and overall at the 2003 Junior Moomba Masters in Melbourne, Australia. Todd, the lone U.S. Junior competing in the event and the current Junior Girls' world jumping champion, also finished second in tricks and slalom.
Todd, of Pierson, Fla., leaped 132 feet (40.3 meters) to clinch the jumping title over Australia’s Karina Nowlan (36.7 meters). She tallied 5,800 points in tricks and ran 1 buoy at 35 feet off in slalom to finish with 2,848.56 overall points. Australians Michale Briant and Nowlan won Junior Girls' tricks and slalom, respectively.
In Junior Boys, Mexico's Carlos LaMadrid won slalom and tricks. New Zealand's James Donald won jumping and France's Quentin Lafosse clinched the overall title.
The 2003 Australand Moomba Masters – an annual event held on the famed and unpredictable Yarra River – marks the first major water ski tournament of the season. Competition at the Moomba Masters begins Friday with the Men’s and Women’s events.

Extreme Sports
The phrase "extreme sports" was evidently coined by ESPN when the network was planning the Extreme Games (now the X Games), which were first held in 1995. Several of the sports that fall into the category, such as snowboarding, skateboarding, and street luge, have also been known as "outlaw sports" because they were banned in many areas for being too dangerous. They have also been characterized as "alternative sports," in part because they are seen as alternatives to older, established sports, but also because many of the athletes adopted an alternative style, originally known as punk and later as grunge, opposed to the conspicuous consumption of the yuppie lifestyle. In general, the extreme sports contain an element of danger, epitomized by daredevil acrobatic stunts performed while traveling at high speed. Many of them are new versions of older sports, made possible by technological changes or improvements in equipment. For example, BMX racing and mountain biking are both based on cycling, barefoot water skiing is an obvious derivative of traditional water skiing, and in-line skating is a form of roller skating. For the most part, extreme sports originated as recreational activities for individuals, but often in a group context, with individual athletes showing off skills for the rest of the group members to imitate or emulate.

March 20, 2000 Is Inline Olympic-Worthy? USOC posts on-line poll asking which of five non-Olympic sports should be added to the Summer Games. The year is divisible by four, so besides adding an extra day to the calendar, it means that the Summer Olympics will be rolling along in the not too distant future. However, there will be no "rolling" except for cycling at Sydney 2000, but with your help, there might be come Athens 2004. Efforts have been underway for the past few years to get roller skating of some form into the most elite sporting event on planet Earth, and this week the United States Olympic Committee is featuring a poll on its website asking which of five sports not yet in the games should be added. (Just go to the USOC homepage and look for "Harris Olympic Poll" in the right-hand column.) Along with roller skating, the choices are bowling, racquetball, squash racquets, and water-skiing. This short list of possible additions to the Games is possibly indicative of good support for roller skating making its way into the Olympic Games, as news reports late last year indicated that about 15 international sport federations had petitioned the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for inclusion. However, there also appears to be strong sentiment that water-skiing be the sport that gets the nod. Inline and quad roller fans are thus encouraged to visit the USOC website and make their choice known. (Or as they say in Chicago, "Vote early. Vote often.")

What a lot of people around Duluth High don't know is that she can jump over 120 feet, hitting the ramp at speeds in excess of 50mph! She holds the Georgia State girls jump and overall records in her age division. To give you an idea of how far ahead of the competition Renee is, the previous Georgia jump distance record was 101 feet. Renee is currently ranked 5th in the World in girls jumping. She also placed 3rd in Slalom at the U.S. Nationals this past August in Destin, Florida, while ending up 5th in jumping and 5th overall. Renee was invited to ski in the Rolex Junior Masters this past year and was selected as an alternate to the U.S. National Junior Team. She was a member of the U.S. Team last year.
    Regina Jaquess
Regina, 12, is a 7th grader at Duluth Middle School. She plays recreational league basketball, ice skates, and plays the trumpet in the school band. Regina has a 4.0 academic average, has been a member of the student council for the past three years and is currently Secretary of the student council. She has also served as a volunteer tutor to younger students. However, it is her achievements on the water that have made her a nationally recognized elite athlete.
