Athletic, Sport, Recreation Bibliography Project
A Welcome Message from the Site's compiler is available or you can go directly to the Database
A complete Summary of the database contents is also available. The Bibliography Project research team credits can be viewed as well. Welcome
from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler:
This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

USA Water Ski has announced that the United States Hydrofoiling Association (USHA) has been named an affiliate sports organization of USA Water Ski. The “affiliate sports organization” status was created as a means to recognize budding water skiing organizations possessing the potential to qualify as a sport division under the USA Water Ski umbrella. USA Water Ski’s board of directors approved the USHA’s affiliate status at its annual winter meeting on Jan. 19. “Over the course of 2002, USA Water Ski’s membership expressed a growing interest in competitive hydrofoiling through their comments on the 2002 membership application and elsewhere,” said Steve McDermeit, USA Water Ski’s executive director. “It is my hope that our affiliation with the U.S. Hydrofoiling Association will continue to benefit the sport in terms of participation, status and public recognition.”

The Slovak Junior Olympic Team celebrating their Bronze medal victory in 1999 Slovakia has always been a country with a rich sports tradition. Among the winter sports, ice hockey and skiing are especially dominant here, but figure skating also has a great tradition. The natural conditions implore the inhabitants of this country to the cultivate winter sports. Football, volleyball, tennis and ice hockey are popular. There is a very good network of marked trails in all mountain areas, and it is possible to plan a walking tour in advance. Hunting is available. Highlights Since independence Slovakia has been represented as a unique nation in the Olympics and other international sports venues. Although Slovaks played a prominent role under the banner of "Czechoslovakia" they had to prove themselves all over again under their new nation state. Slovakia made its Olympic debut at the Winter Olympic games in Lillehammer 1994. Success has followed for this nation of 5 million people. At the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics Slovakia picked up 3 medals, including one gold. Nagano 1998 was shutout but victories in other international events followed. At the Hockey World Juniors in 1999 the Slovak team managed to get bronze. In 2000, at the Icehockey World Championships Slovakia clinched the silver medal after a defeat by their former partners, the Czech Republic.

Akita Hosts Asia's First World Games
October 11, 2001
The sixth World Games, an international multi-sports spectacle featuring events not included in the Olympic Games, took place from August 16 to 26 in the northern prefecture of Akita . It was the first time that the Games were held in Asia. Some 4,000 athletes and officials from 87 countries and regions participated in the quadrennial event, providing thrilling competition.
Among the 31 sports comprising 169 events held at the Akita Games were tug of war, flying disc, parachuting, roller skating, water skiing, bodybuilding, and sports aerobics. The Games included sports that are not yet widely recognized, such as finswimming, a speed competition in which swimmers don a large, dolphin-like fin; beach handball; and faustball, a sport similar to volleyball, where players hit the ball with the fist. Although many of these are still largely regarded as leisure sports, the world's top athletes were on hand to compete in them.
Top Japanese Performers
Approximately 300 Japanese athletes took part in the Akita World Games. Japan shined in the karate competition and collected a total of 9 gold, 6 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
