Operations Suspended
All operations on the Mid-South Weather Team web site have been suspended as of April 5, 2002. All pages of this site are still online, but none of the exclusive forecasts are being updated. The national severe weather forecast is still available, however. It is updated on a daily basis by a certified meteorologist. We are working to "revamp" this site in order to make it a sole source for general weather information, but not weather analysis as in the past. We believe the newly modified version of this site will be of much use. Regional Radar Above is the current regional radar map. home local severe tropical ... Mid-South Weather Team

http://www.nyip.com/tips/topic_coldtemps01.html
How Should I Handle My Camera in Cold Weather?
'Tis the season, and we're getting lots of letters from NYI students and other Web visitors about taking photos in cold weather. There are lots of great photo opportunities out there whether your idea of a good time is ice fishing, snow shoeing or just plain walking in the winter wonderland. You just need to get out there and take the proper steps.
The letters we get reveal that the proper steps to protect your camera are often confused in people's minds. Here's an e-mail we got recently from a photographer in Ontario, Canada, that is typical: "I am happily snapping away, but having a bit of a problem keeping my camera warm and unfrozen in our cold, blustery weather. If I carry it bundled under my coat, should I keep it in a plastic bag (I read about this somewhere) to prevent condensation? Any suggestions?"
Okay. You asked. Here are the facts and the answers to all the basic camera tips regarding cold weather.
The problem with lots of tips about cold weather photography is that they get out of sequence. Here's why. There are really three different scenarios to consider: First, what to do when you take your camera from a warm, cozy home or car into the bitter cold outside. Second, what to do when you're shooting pictures outside in the cold. Third, what to do when you finally bring your freezing camera back into that warm cozy house or car.
Okay. First, what should you do when you bring your warm camera outside? Do you have to worry about moisture condensing from the cold air onto the warm surface of the lens or the film or the electronics? No. Cold air has low moisture content. There's little or no condensation when you go outside into the cold. (As we'll discuss, this becomes a problem when you go back inside.)

For the rest of us, from Spokane to Atlanta, Caribou to Flagstaff, it's winter in earnest. Many folks who have not had snow in years are seeing it now, and the rest of us (I'm in Maryland) are having more and it is STAYING longer than in recent memory. It's a great time to get out and do every type of outdoor shooting from simply capturing the kids' snowman to black and white art shots of icicles in the trees. Before you venture out, though, a few hints! - Prepare your body before anything. You may think you'll just be out "for a minute" but that minute can be very expensive if you get sick! - Prepare your equipment next. Cameras can function quite well in cold temps, as can film. What you don't want to do is to be changing lenses unnecessarily or trying to put on a filter with gloves or change film because you went out with 35 of 36 on the roll shot. Think about what you want to do and get the right lens, fresh film roll, and any filters ready to go. - Prepare your mind next. Remember that snow will cause your camera to have different readings than a regular day. You can easily overexpose shots by going by what your meter says. Remember to bracket exposure at least 2-3 stops just in case. You don't want to get a sheet of pure white and no details because you went by the readings of a meter flooded with pure white!

Mammatus Clouds In April 2000, we had a series of storms come through Central Texas, and two evenings had these remarkable mammatus clouds: Moon and Sunset These were taken from the parking lot of one of the apartments I lived in. I went to McDonald Observatory with a group of friends to watch the Great Solar Eclipse of 1991 and got just as much video and still photos of thunderstorms as we did of the eclipse! Both of the following images were taken at the base of Mt. Locke at the Visitor Center. I know the lightning bolt isn't spectacular, like Chuck Doswell's , but, hey, it was my first, so I'm proud of it.

Much thanks to Michael Masters and Middle Tennessee SKYWARN for allowing us the use of thier rotating SKYWARN pog graphic. This page depicts some severe weather related events that I have been able to photograph and/or video. The reason I thought to put up this page is because after taking some spotter training classes, and after browsing the web I began to realize that there really wasn't that much photographic documentation on severe storm phenomena as they occur in Florida out there especially as they occur here in Alachua County . I figured if noone else is going to do it, I might as well. Besides, I need an excuse to display these things. In the future, I hope maybe this will grow to become more of a photographic library of things severe weather related as they pertain to the area of northern Florida. As it is now, of the severe stuff photographed, it seems to quickly be becoming something of a library of things that can fool you, or of things which are as yet unknown as to what exactly they were. This will do just as well, though. For all the photos of the obviuos out there, I'd still like to see examples of things which can fool me, too. This way, I can learn.

Wintry Weather Photography Dealing with the Tribulations of Cold Weather Photography
Keeping Your Batteries Warm
Photographers complain that one of the most common problems of working in the field is running out of battery power. And the problem only gets worse in cold weather, which saps battery efficiency.
Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the New York Institute of Photography, America’s oldest and largest photography school, counsels all photographers to " Keep the camera, flash, and batteries as warm as possible, even if that means keeping them under your coat or near your body for warmth".
